safe boaters equipment jumble

Identify boaters safety equipment from the descriptions below. Write the equipments number next to its description.

Equipment

Number Description Oars are used to paddle to safety in the event of the motor breaking down. A radio is important in an emergency as it can be used to request help. It is also useful to log-in and log-out with a radio when you go boating. A first aid kit should be carried on board all boats to attend to people who have injured themselves. The contents include bandages, seasickness tablets, antiseptic cream and sunscreen. All boats with an engine must carry a fire extinguisher. If you have a larger boat, more than one fire extinguisher might be needed. Find out more about requirements on the MAST website. Children must wear personal flotation devices (PFD) at all times when going boating. Make sure that it is the right type for the area you are going and that it fits you snuggly. Any small rowing or sailing craft and small motor boats must carry a torch when operating at night. This is to notify other vessels that you are there, otherwise they may not see you. Flares are like fireworks. Boaters let them off to let people know that they are in trouble and require assistance. There are different types for night and day use. An EPIRB is an Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon which when activated sends a signal to search and rescue authorities via satellite notifying them that you are in trouble.

An anchor must be carried on all boats. It is best used to stop a boat drifting away from shore if the engine has broken down. Always remember to never anchor your boat from the stern. It is a requirement to carry a bucket or bailer on all boats. This is not to put the fish in, but is to bail water out if the boat takes a wave or becomes swamped.

True or False
Answer true or false to the following sentences by ticking the appropriate box.

It is not compulsory to carry PFDs in vessels in Tasmania. It is important to check the weather forecast before going boating. Before going boating you should tell someone where you are going and when you will return. The weather forecast that you listen to the night before you go boating is the most up-to-date forecast available. If the weather is windy and cold and the seas are rough cancel the trip and wait for a better day. If your boats engine breaks down it is best to fire off all your flares. If your boat capsizes you should stay with the boat until help arrives. It is compulsory to carry an anchor, fire extinguisher, oars, a bucket and personal flotation devices in a motor boat. When you are loading your boat you should fit as much fishing gear in the boat as possible.

ACTIVITY

Buoyancy
All boats require buoyancy to allow them to float in a capsize or swamping. This buoyancy can be foam or air compartments. A boat that floats is more easily spotted by search and rescue people. Occupants have even been able to bail the water out of a boat that remains floating.

If your boat floats you can get on top of it and get out of the cold water.

If your boat floats, never swim to shore - always stay with the boat until help arrives.

If your boat does not have buoyancy then you cannot get to safety equipment and youre left floating in cold water.
