Introduction

Momentum of a particle is the product of the mass of the particle and its velocity. When two bodies collide to each other, the total momentum before a collision is equal to the total momentum after the collision, if there is no eternal force acting. Momentum also known as Mass in Motion. There is two type of collision, elastic collision and inelastic collision.

Momentum = Mass x Velocity m1u1 + m2u2 = m1v1 + m2v2 ( elastic collision parting ) m1u1 + m2u2 = (m1+m2)v ( inelastic collision stick together )

Impulse is the change in linear momentum of a body. It may be defined or calculated as the product of the average force multiplied by the time over which the force is exerted. Impulse is a vector quantity since it is the result of integrating force, a vector quantity, over time. The SI unit of impulse is the newton second (Ns) or, in base units, the kilogram meter per second (kgm/s).

Impulse = Force x Time (Ns @ kg m/s) Impulse = mv mu (NS @ kg m/s)

Objective

1. To enforce the understanding about momentum and impulse. 2. To understand the application of momentum and impulse in daily life. 3. Can apply or use the principle of momentum and impulse in daily life.

Scope of Study

1. 2. 3. 4.

How to calculate a momentum of an object. How to calculate an impulse of an object. How to find the acceleration and velocity of an object. How to find the force of an object.

Result / Finding

i.

Which truck will experience the greatest force? - The bigger truck has the mass of 20 times heavier than the smaller truck. If an objects mass is high, then its the force is greater. Therefore the bigger truck will experience the greatest force.

ii.

Which truck will experience the greatest impulse? - The smaller truck have a greater change in momentum of an object, thus the smaller truck will experience the greatest impulse.

iii.

Which truck will experience the change in momentum? - The smaller truck will have the greatest change in momentum because after collision the velocity of the smaller truck change dramatically.

iv.

Which truck will experience the greatest change in velocity? - The smaller truck experience the highest momentum, thus the smaller truck also experience the highest change in velocity. This is because the higher the momentum, the higher the change of velocity.

v.

Which truck will experience the greatest acceleration? - The smaller truck the smaller truck will experience the greatest acceleration because it has less mass then the bigger truck, thus the smaller truck accelerate faster than the bigger truck. In other words, the smaller truck experience the greatest acceleration.

vi.

which truck would you rather be in during the collision? - I would rather to be in the bigger truck as both bigger and the smaller truck collide with each other. This is because the momentum that the bigger truck experience during the collision is less than the smaller truck.

Discussion & Suggestion

Discussion i. According to Newtons 3rd law that both objects will experience forces that are equal in magnitude upon collision. Even though they experience equal forces, the acceleration of both objects can be equally.

ii.

According to the law the force exerted by object 1 upon object 2 is equal in magnitude and vice versa.

iii.

Impulse is the multiplication of force and time of contact. Thus the impulse is same in magnitude for both objects. Ignore the mass of the objects as well as the change in momentum of the objects body.

iv.

Since the acceleration is change in velocity over change in time, the acceleration is greater for an object that have lighter mass. Thus enabling it move further backward despite its lighter.

Suggestion. i. ii. iii. All information about velocity and acceleration must be in m/s and m/s2. In this chapter all information about mass must be in Kilogram (kg) and Newton (N). Dont get confuse with acceleration and velocity.

Conclusion

In study head-on collision we are essentially applying the principle of conservation of momentum. The fact that many of these problems are soluble speaks to the importance of this principle. From the understand of collision in one dimension, we will move on to the two dimensional case, in which the same principles are applied, but the situation themselves become more complex.
