Topic : Final Evaluations Blogging on Office 365

Time : 2 x 75min Period (150 minutes)

Prior Student Knowledge:

Students knowledge & skills as taught throughout the term. This activity allows students to access prior knowledge. Students have developed knowledge concerning the various parts and functions of a robot and have been working with microcontrollers extensively. Students have a lot of experience working with MPLAB X software and programming in both C language and Assembler.

Minds On: 15 minutes

Day 1

Pose the question: With all the robot building that is going on and will continue for the next 3 weeks in class, how can we create an environment where we can share our work and demonstrate our knowledge, and collaborate? Open Office 365 on the LCD and show students our class site: pictures of the class working on their robots under Class Pictures, the calendar which outlines major deadlines for their final evaluations, and the Class Blog. Have students access it on their own devices. Ask students if theyve blogged before. What is blogging? Look at the examples Ive posted on the class blog.

Subsequent Days Review appropriate use when blogging. Site examples of good blogs where possible Showcase it on the LCD and have a discussion on how it could be improved. Highlight and give positive reinforcement to students who post

Action / Work On:

Day 1

Day 2

Outline the expectations for blogging: the purpose is to demonstrate curricular expectations by sharing information and to demonstrate your knowledge about the various input and output devices of your robot. A minimum of two posts/week: and a minimum of two comments/week. Read the Blogging Rules and Guidelines as a class. All students must respond in a post that they have read the terms and they understand. The blog posts should fall under the Ideas or Opinions section of the Class Blog. Students are to complete one blog post by the end of class. Explain consolidation to class.

Provide students with time during class to create new blog posts. Demonstrate how to properly cite photos. Show students Creative Commons and how to pull pictures from these sites. Continue to moderate all posts. Teacher will model appropriate behaviour by posting blogs on the robot and adding pictures, video, and text etc.

Consolidation and Connections / Debrief:

Day 1 Pull up all posts on the Class Blog. Read one as a class and come up with an appropriate comment. Explain to students that their replies must have some content to it. All students comment on at least one blog post. Students have an opportunity to work on it at home as the account is web-based.

Subsequent Days Invite students to share their blog posts and/or comments/replies. Students have an opportunity to complete it at home as the account is web-based.

Overall and Specific Curriculum Expectations:

A3. demonstrate an understanding of devices and electronic circuits in interfaces and control systems; A3.1 use technical terminology to accurately describe the specifications for electronic components and computer interfaces; A3.2 describe the function and operation of various input devices, output devices, and electronic circuits used in interface and control systems (e.g., input devices: temperature sensor, light sensor, position encoder; output devices: AC motor, step- per motor; circuits: power supply, motor driver); A3.5 research and select components based on circuit requirements (e.g., use Internet searches, manufacturers data sheets, supplier catalogues, and/or parts database). B3. design, build, test, and troubleshoot interfaces and other circuits that meet specific design requirements; B3.2 construct circuits made from both discrete components and integrated circuits to perform specific functions (e.g., regulated power supply, electronic dice, audio amplifier, microcontroller- based alarm circuit); B3.3 safely construct electronic circuits for interfacing or robotic applications using appropriate materials, tools, and techniques, including soldering (e.g., materials: breadboard, printed circuit board, etchant, solder; tools: soldering iron, etch bath, third hand with magnifier); B3.4 test and troubleshoot electronic circuits, using appropriate methods (e.g., isolating and substituting components) and test equipment (e.g., multimeter, oscilloscope, logic probe), and modify the circuits to meet design requirements if necessary. B5. demonstrate an understanding of programming concepts, and create programs that interact with external devices. B5.1 compare low-level and high-level programming languages; B5.2 apply programming concepts including subroutines, parameter passing, decision and repetition structures, arrays, and character representation; B5.3 use a design process to create a program that interacts with a real-world device (e.g., traffic light, alarm system, robot, joystick); B5.4 write a low-level program that runs on a real or simulated controller device (e.g., programmable logic controller [PLC], microcontroller, assembler simulator).
