Senior leadership key to successful season
By JOE SHOUSE
Sportswriter
ANTWERP Antwerp head baseball
coach Zac Feasby enters his second year at
the helm of the Archers with a more confident
attitude. This year the blue and white return a
host of seniors with experience that should
push the Archers to a respectable season.
We only lost two seniors from last years
team and we return solid pitching depth and
experience, said Feasby.
Finishing 3-13 last campaign, Feasby feels
the lumps his team took last year will make
his squad a better team this time around.
With 13 returning lettermen including
seven seniors providing leadership I am con-
fident we will make great strides this season.
We look to be more competitive in league
play, said Feasby.
At the pitching position, leading candi-
dates returning will be senior Derek Smalley,
Tyler Messman and Joe Buerkle. Kaden
Brumett returns after sitting out last year.
Kaden will be a great addition to our
pitching rotation, said Feasby.
Last year Smalley finished with a 1.8 ERA
and 26 strikeouts. Messman recorded an
ERA of 4.8 with 11 strikeouts with Buerkle
also recording 11 strikeouts.
At the plate, the Archers will again depend
upon Smalley, who hit for a .400 average
with 12 RBIs and 12 stolen bases. Justice
Clark, a sophomore this year, managed a
.281 batting average last year as a freshman.
Trenton Copsey finished with a .256 average
and teammate Collin Perry hitting at a .250
clip.
Our first four or five hitters should be
solid this year, but were looking for the bot-
tom of the lineup to step up more than last
year, Feasby said.
Other players returning who will be an im-
portant part of the Archer program are sen-
iors Matt Reinhart, Justin Langham and
Chad Jones along with juniors Alex Vail,
Trenton Copsey, Jon Hudson and sophomore
Jeff Coleman.
Promising newcomers who will represent
the blue and white include sophomore Kee-
gan Skiver and freshmen Jules Huault-
Dupuy, Michael Taylor, Hunter Noel,
Matthew Dooley and Ian Blair.
This team is working hard to get back to
the level the Archers played at back in the
late 1990s to mid 2000s. Im hopeful and
confident that the upcoming season will be
a great start in the right direction, said
coach Feasby.
Archer fans need to circle Thursday, May
8 on their calendar as the Archers will play
Wayne Trace at Parkview Field in downtown
Fort Wayne.

Rodenberger welcomes nine letter winners
By JOE SHOUSE
Sportswriter
ANTWERP Veteran head coach Garry
Rodenberger welcomes 18 players to the
2014 edition of Antwerp girls softball pro-
gram. Rodenberger is entering his 12th year
of coaching with his last seven at Antwerp.
The Archers lost just one player due to
graduation in Avrial Sawyer, a second team
all-GMC selection a year ago. Looking
ahead to the current season Rodenberger has
nine returning letter winners and will have a
very young squad with just one senior.
Kaiya Jemison will represent the senior
class and will be one of the teams pitchers.
Jemison was a solid hitter at the plate last
year with a 0.405 batting average. Also re-
turning will be junior Cheyenne Miller-
Sweet, a two-year player for the Archers
who received GMC honorable mention last
year. Miller-Sweet had a 0.269 average at the
plate.
Four juniors who received considerable
play last year return and will be challenged
to raise their level of play for the Archers.
Olivia Temple (0.213 batting average), Nikki
Hughes (0.200 batting average), Darian Bauer
(0.275 batting average), and Marivelle Flint
round out the returning juniors.
A trio of sophomores return including in-
fielders Sidney Barnhouse and Beth Hawley,
along with outfielder Emily Derck. All three
had solid performances at the plate during last
years campaign with Barnhouse hitting at a
0.375 clip followed by Dercks 0.256, and
Hawley hitting 0.250.
Coach Rodenberger has three newcomers he
feels will get playing time including sophomore
Makayla Brandenburg and two freshmen, Pey-
ton Short and Becca Johanns.
We have a hard working group of athletes
with a desire to improve from last year and we
will continue to work on those things that will
help us throughout the season, said Roden-
berger.
Last season the Lady Archers finished sev-
enth in the eight team GMC, just ahead of Hol-
gate. The blue and white were 1-6 and 4-14
overall, losing in the sectional finals to Edger-
ton.
If we plan to compete our pitching must be-
come more consistent and its a must that we
improve our fielding skills. Last year we simply
didnt field the ball effectively, said Roden-
berger.
Other members of the blue and white softball
squad include: freshmen Emilee Phillips and
Autumn Hughes. Sophomores Avery Braaten,
Sierra Cline, and Nikki Mills, and junior Eliza-
beth Bond.
Going into a new season our expectations
are always high but based upon the setbacks of
last year we will see just how far expectation
and actual performance are apart when ap-
proaching the season, concluded Rodenberger.

10th place at the state meet in Columbus
with Longardner, also a freshman, participat-
ing in the 400 and taking 11th. Ehrhart will
have the luxury of having the two back this
year.
Seniors who will be wearing the blue and
white will be Colton Hall and Colton Stout;
and for the girls, Bethany Dunderman and
Tiffany Romero.
Representing the junior class on the boys
side will be Jerett Godeke, Justis Harvey,

Ehrhart believes one of the strengths for
this years boys team will be the addition of
some new sprinters.
Our sprint relays should be more compet-
itive plus we return a strong distance group,
he said.
One of the concerns for the coach is a lack
of numbers on the boys side. We are not
very deep but at the same time we have some
kids who will compete in most events,
Ehrhart said.
He went on to say, I think the boys will
be tough in the small meet competition. Our
goal, like always, is to finish in the top three
in the Green Meadows Conference.
The sophomores on the boys team in-
clude Erik Buchan, Chase Gerken, Josh Lon-
gardner, Aaron ODonnell, and Sam
Williamson. Freshmen team members: Evan
Hilton, Aaron Romero, Lucas Scharr and
Hayden Spryn.

A number of strong athletes from the
sophomore and junior class joined with a

lieving his girls team will have an exciting
year.
The girls track team will be young with
just two seniors, nine juniors and the remain-

Noggle looking to jump start Raider program
By KEVIN WANNEMACHER
Sportswriter
HAVILAND Coming off of a season
that saw them finish 7-17 a year ago, the
Wayne Trace baseball squad looks to im-
prove on that mark in 2014 under the direc-
tion of first-year head coach Matt Noggle.
Noggle takes over a squad that was 1-6 in
the Green Meadows Conference a year ago
as well and is hopeful of doing better this
year. The Raider head coach has been very
pleased with the work ethic so far.
The guys have been working very hard
so far and have done a good job, com-
mented Noggle. We have really tried to im-
prove our skills fundamentally and we want
to get better at doing the little things.
The Raider roster will include five seniors
with four of them playing at the varsity level
last year.
Broc Forrer, Aaron Stoller, Colby Speice
and Marcus McVay all return for their final
seasons while Darian Asher also joins the
club for his senior season.
Speice tied for the team lead in innings
pitched last season, tossing 51-2/3, while
striking out 42 with a 3.52 earned run aver-
age. The senior, who will also see action at
shortstop when not on the mound, topped the
red, white and blue in batting average (.367),
runs scored (16) and stolen bases (14) a year
ago.
Forrer was 2-0 with a 3.00 earned run av-
erage before having his season end due to an
injury. The senior also batted .625 in five
games as a junior, scoring six runs and driv-
ing in eight.

Lady Raiders have high expectations
By KEVIN WANNEMACHER
Sportswriter
HAVILAND After winning 13 games a
year ago, the Wayne Trace Lady Raider soft-
ball team enters the 2014 campaign with
high hopes.
The red, white and blue welcomes back
eight letter winners from that squad and this
years version of the Raiders should be very
strong both on the mound and defensively.
Wayne Trace will have to overcome the
loss of pitcher Kaleigh Young from a year
ago, who posted seven victories and was one
of the top Raiders hitters with a .368 batting
average. Young also struck out 86 batters in
78 plus innings for Wayne Trace.
However, the cupboard is not bare, ac-
cording to Raider head coach Jack Baumle.
We have a lot of experience back this
year so we are very optimistic and excited
about the coming season, noted the Raider
mentor. We should be very strong both on
the mound and defensively this year.
Leading the list of returnees for the Lady
Raiders are a pair of junior pitchers in Addi-
son Baumle and Molly Crosby.
Baumle was 5-3 a year ago with an earned
run average of 2.94 while also hitting .358
at the plate for Wayne Trace. She also added
11 doubles and 18 runs batted in for the
Raiders last season.
Crosby will be the other half of the pitch-
ing rotation. The junior hurler was 1-1 with
a 2.50 earned run average before suffering a
season ending injury last season.
The infield should be solid defensively
with virtually all players who saw extensive
action a year ago returning with the excep-
tion of Young.
Senior Libby Stabler will handle the duties
at first base with the other three sports po-
tentially rotating depending on the pitcher.
Baumle and Crosby are each expected to see
action in the infield along with senior Emilie
Linder and junior Bailey Bergman.
Linder also comes back from an injury a
year ago. The Raider senior hit .480 with a
double, triple and five runs batted in despite
seeing action in only seven games.
Bergman returns to the Wayne Trace
lineup this year after playing for the Raiders
as a freshman.
Junior Mackenzie Swary and sophomore
Carley Wright are expected to handle the
catching duties for the red, white and blue.
Swary batted .302 last season, driving in 10
runs and scoring 14 on the season.
In the outfield, seniors Madison McClure
and Brenda Feasby each return with Swary
or sophomore Sydney Critten also getting
playing time.
Feasby hit .288 a year ago and scored 17
runs while driving in eight while McClure
finished the year with a .228 batting average
to go along with seven runs batted in and
eight runs scored. Feasby also led the team
in stolen bases with eight.

Branch has optimism for Raider tracksters
By KEVIN WANNEMACHER
Sportswriter
HAVILAND The Wayne Trace track
teams come into the season with lots of op-
timism for the 2014 season as the boys and
girls each bring back key personnel from a
year ago.
On the boys side, the red, white and blue
will feature a senior dominated roster that
should be very competitive overall.
The Raider roster features 13 seniors and
25 overall athletes under the direction of
head coach Troy Branch.
Wayne Trace should be able to be compet-
itive in most events this year and Branch has
been pleased with the work effort so far.
We havent been able to do much outside
but the guys have really worked hard inside,
commented the Raider mentor. Our roster has
a large group of seniors that has been through a
lot in other sports so they know what it takes to
be competitive. Now it just comes down to put-
ting the time and work in to bring that compet-
itiveness to the track.
With the success of the football team fol-
lowed by the boys basketball program,
Branch is hopeful that this group of seniors
can lead the track program as well.
Weve got a good group of seniors for
our younger kids to learn from, continued
Branch. These kids have had a lot of suc-
cess this year but now we have to carry that
over to the spring sports season. Track is a
little more of an individual sport so each kid
has to be willing to push themselves and be-
come the best they can be. That is where the
seniors and our leadership kids are going to
have be able to show them what it takes.
Senior Arlen Stoller will lead the Raider
distance runners with fellow senior Logan
Fast and Matt Klopfenstein along with fresh-
man Chandler Thompson also challenging.
Distance runners are probably the hardest
thing to fill for us, added the Raider mentor.
A lot of kids dont want to run that longer
distance but we have some kids that have re-

ally committed themselves to improving and
doing the best they can there.
Middle distance runners include senior
Brandon Zartman, sophomore Cole Shep-
herd, freshman Sam Nickols and freshman
Seth Saylor.
The sprints should be a strength for the red,
white and blue with seniors Korbin Showalter,
Kenny Ganter, Alec Kuhn and Wes Goings
pacing the Raiders. Others expected to chal-
lenge for Wayne Trace include sophomores
Connor Arend, Scott Wenninger and Austin
Kuhn along with freshmen Jayden Sherry and
Chance Elliott.
We have depth in the sprints this year and
I think as a group they will just keep getting
better, added Branch.
Hurdlers for Wayne Trace include seniors
Alec Kuhn and Wes Goings, sophomore
Austin Kuhn and freshman Seth Saylor.
Four seniors will handle the shot put and
discus duties for Wayne Trace along with a
pair of underclassmen. Devin Wenzlick, Sean
Durre, Brock Worden and Hank Sinn all came
out for their final season in the track program
while junior Austin Conlon and sophomore
Scott Wenninger also will be throwing.
Others expected to participate in field events
include sophomore Gabe Wobler (high jump),
sophomore Cole Shepherd (long jump), junior
David Sinn (high jump) and senior Jake Ger-
ber (pole vault).
We have high hopes and expectations for
this year, Branch concluded. If we are able
to stay away from injuries and we get better
each week, we feel we can be very competi-
tive this year.
The Lady Raider squad returns some key
athletes as well but Wayne Trace also will face
a depth issue due to a lack of numbers.
Wayne Traces roster will have only four
seniors in Abbie Shepherd, Alexis Flores,
Brooke Wilcox and Madison Poling.
Obviously, the low numbers is a concern
just from a depth standpoint, stated Branch.
We are going to have to stay away from the
injury bug this year.
Shepherd, junior Haley Saylor and sopho-
more Brianna Sinn will take care of the middle
distance for the Lady Raiders while Poling and
sophomore Hollie Wannemacher will be the
primary distance runners.
The girls we do have are working very
hard, added the Raider head coach. They are
putting the time in and have done a nice job of
pushing themselves.
In the sprints, the Raiders will be led by
Wilcox, junior Carrigan Critten, sophomore
Brianna Sinn, sophomore Shayna Temple,
sophomore Stacy Flint, freshman Jerrickah
Thomas, freshman Kacey Reinhart and fresh-
man Monique Goings.
Temple and Reinhart also will take care of
the hurdle events for Wayne Trace.
Weve got some girls who we think will be
very competitive for us, noted Branch. The
key for us is to develop that depth and become
better track athletes.
In the field events, Goings (long jump),
sophomore Emily Mohr (high jump), Estie
Sinn (shot put, discus), Temple (high jump),
Mohr (high jump) and Flores (shot put, discus)
will handle the respective events.
We want to continue to work hard and im-
prove this year, concluded Branch. We want
to peak at the end of the year and look to be
competitive in the Green Meadows Confer-
ence meet.

after throwing 29 innings in 2013. Stoller will
handle the catching duties for the Raiders and
posted a .286 on-base percentage last season.
The upperclassmen are showing good
leadership and I expect that to continue,
Noggle added.
Also returning from last seasons squad is
sophomore Andy Hicks, who will see action
on the mound as well as in the infield. Hicks

a .357 on-base percentage.
Newcomers to the Raider varsity include

I feel our pitching staff is going to be
pretty solid, Noggle stated. We have and are
still working on getting better location on our
pitches and being smarter on the mound as
pitchers. We want to be aggressive and take
the game at the hitters instead of the other
way around.
Defensively, the red, white and blue looks
to improve after giving up 68 unearned runs
last season.
That is an area that we hope to show im-

provement on and just continue to get better
at throughout the year, added the rookie
Raider coach. If we can eliminate some of
the mistakes and limit teams to three outs, it
only helps our pitchers and gives us a better
opportunity for success.
Wayne Trace also must do a better job at
the plate, according to the first year Raider
mentor.
We need to be disciplined at the plate,
noted Noggle. We dont want to take away
our aggressiveness but it has to be in a smart
fashion. We want to make pitchers work and
not just give away at-bats.
Freshman Blaine Jerome, Brandon Laney,
Seth Yenser and Steven Torman also look to
battle for playing time in the coming season.
We have a very solid core of players who
have really bought into our philosophies,
said Noggle. They come ready to improve
themselves every day and the effort and en-
ergy has been great so far. We have set the
bar very high as a squad.
As far as the Green Meadows Conference
goes, Noggle feels Tinora is the team to beat.
Tinora is probably the favorite with the
tradition they have, concluded the first year
Raider mentor. Edgerton and Ayersville
should be very competitive as well. We just
want to compete and challenge as well.

MAKING SENSE OF INVESTING
We support the Panthers, Archers
and Raiders! Heres to a great year.
Baumle feels like the Raider speed should
be a big asset as well.
Weve got some speed and we are hope-
ful that we are able to take advantage of that
on the bases this year, continued the Raider
head coach. The biggest area we need to
show improvement is at the plate and doing
a better job of getting quality at-bats. We
need to be aggressive but we also need to be
disciplined and not take ourselves out of
good situations. We want to make teams
work both on the mound and defensively
against us.
The Raiders come into the year with high
hopes in the Green Meadows Conference
race as well.
Fairview is probably the favorite, con-
cluded Baumle. But Tinora has a quality
program and they always put together a good
team. Edgerton will be very competitive as
well and they do good job there. We are
hopeful to be in the race as well.

Paulding baseball loaded with experience, leadership
By JIM LANGHAM

PAULDING A strong senior class and
lots of experience looks to bring lots of im-
provement to the Paulding Panther baseball
program this spring. Coach Mike Leach has
10 returning letterwinners, including eight
starters from last seasons squad.
Leach is especially optimistic with this
groups positive attitude and determined
work habits. That, plus senior depth, looks
to give Panther fans a lot to cheer about this
spring, said the mentor.
The team attitude has proven to be deter-
mined, hardworking and has been our high-
light in the preseason, said Leach.
Since Leach has a little concern about bat-
ting early in the season, he hopes that strong
pitching will help carry the squad through
until the batters get more experience.
Our senior leadership has been outstand-
ing. I am also very excited about our pitch-
ing depth as we have a lot of good arms
returning from last season.
Starting seniors include Kyle Kauser
(right-handed, infield/pitcher), Quentin
Vance (right-handed, outfield), Javier Gon-
zales (left-handed, infield/pitcher), Treston
Gonzales (right-handed, infield/pitcher),
Gerod Harder (right-handed, outfield/

Lady Panthers look to pitchers for early success
By JIM LANGHAM
Sportswriter
PAULDING Paulding head softball
coach Matt Carr will be counting on solid
defense and pitching to get his Panther girls
off and running this season. Batting could be
sluggish to start with, but Carr is looking for
the offense to come along as the season pro-
gresses.
Still, the return of nine lettermen will
serve as a solid core for what Carr hopes to
be a vastly improved team this season.
Last spring, Paulding lost two letterwin-
ners from a team that finished 7-11 overall
but ended with a winning record of 5-4 in
Northwest Conference play. Breanna
Schmidt and Alexis Rue were both solid
players lost to graduation last spring.
Experienced players returning this year in-
clude seniors Jerika Bland, a three-year let-
terman who received honorable mention for
the conference; Kandee Manson, two-year
letterman who will play in the outfield;
Alyssa Shelmadine, also a two-year out-
fielder; senior Abby Pease, three-year first
baseman; and outfielder and pitcher Emily
Farr, a one-year veteran.
Underclassmen include Brooke Combs
(three-year letterman, junior first baseman),
Suzanne Reinhart (junior first base with two
years experience), Morgan Riley (a one-
year junior with third-base experience) and
Kristen Schilt (a sophomore with one years
experience at pitching and utility).
We have a group of girls that work hard
and will continue to get better, said Carr.
We are fortunate to have experience coming
back to the field.
Initially, Carr is concerned about manufac-
turing runs.
We need the girls to cut down on strike-
outs and they need to put the ball in play,
said Carr. We have to get offensive produc-
tion from our entire lineup and not just a few
girls. We have to become better overall on
offense.
Carr said that the squad is looking to be
competitive. Once the girls gain self-confi-
dence, said Carr, they are going to surprise a
lot of teams.
We have pitchers that will throw strikes
and hopefully our offense will improve
throughout the season, Carr said.
Overall, Carr looks for Crestview and Lin-
colnview to be at the top of the league with
their top pitchers coming back this season.

Strong athletes to anchor track program
By JIM LANGHAM
Sportswriter
PAULDING Paulding track coach Hay-
den Krick is anticipating solid core athlete
talent on both sides of the ledger for the Pan-
ther track program this spring. Seventeen
girls are participating on their track team
while 24 boys are out for the guys team.
Krick is optimistic about returning seniors
to give solid leadership for the girls. Sidney
Salinas looks to be a strong athlete who did
well under Kricks mentoring of the cross
country team last fall. Salinas will be seek-
ing to contribute from mid-distant competi-
tion, especially on the 4x4 800 meter relay
team.
Another senior, Meagan Weller, who
placed in the conference meet last year, is
expected to sprint out in the 100 and 200
meter races as well as the 4x1 and 4x2 relay
competition.
Senior Ashley Johanns, who also had a
good year in cross country, is expected to
produce points in the long distance such as
the one-mile and two-mile races.
She is a dedicated athlete that is always
willing to fill in where she is needed, said
Krick. You can always count on her 100
percent.
In field events, the Panthers will especially
count on the skills of Tori Bradford, who is
expected to excel in high jump and throwing
competition.
She is very good in multiple events, said
Krick. She will fit in wherever she is
needed. She can also be a good relayer.
Also in field events, junior Malayna Van-
Cleve will be giving her skills in high hur-
dles. In addition, two freshmen, Molly
Meeker and Taylor Marsh, should be in the
mix of sprinting competition.

We will see how they do as they gain self-
confidence, said Krick of Meeker and Marsh.
They are going to get some points for us be-
fore the season is over.
In guys competition, Krick will be looking
for balance in all areas. For senior leadership,
the mentor will be looking to Travis Jones, who
will specialize once again in the 800 event as
well as other mid-distance competition. Jones,
a seasoned veteran, has run track all four years.
Two seniors, Logan Stahl and Ryan
Schindler, will lead the way in throwing events.
They are going to help add points in field
events this year, said Krick.
In other field events, Krick is looking for
good things from Sean Bentley, a high jumper
who has been working hard to establish him-
self. In addition, Dylan Carnahan has high
goals as a pole vaulter, goals that Krick be-
lieves will be achieved.
One transfer from New Mexico, Ron Mer-
cer, has good speed and has been successful in
major events. Krick also likes sophomore
Lucas Arend, who came out for cross country
last year.
He has good wheels under him, said
Krick. He will be a good 800 meter, a really
good potential athlete this year.
Freshman sprinter Preston Ingol was a good
junior high sprinter. Another freshman, Simeon
Shepherd, had a good year running cross coun-
try.
Hes going to be a good miler but were
going to have to get him to relax, noted Krick.
I feel like he is going to bring us a lot of points
this year.
Rounding out Pauldings roster is Dayton
Pracht, a freshman who also was a cross coun-
try athlete. Krick looks for Pracht to also excel
in the two-mile event.
We have a lot of strong seniors, a lot of
good leaders, said Krick of his boys team.
They are experienced and know what it is to
compete. There is a good ratio between upper
and lower classmen. They are talented across
the board. We are going to have a good solid
team.

pitcher/catcher) and Corbin Edwards (both
left and right-handed, outfield/pitcher) both
return as starting sophomores.
Two other letterwinners, Justin Adams, a
senior, and Alex Arellano, a sophomore,
make up this years experienced pack.
Last years team finished 6-14 overall and
4-5 in the Northwest Conference.
One of Leachs concerns in this early sea-
son is developing more consistency, defen-
sively.
We need to work on consistency making
the routine defensive plays, said Leach.
We also need work on our timing at the
plate and becoming more aggressive offen-
sively, noted Leach. Our hitting attack will
continue to improve with each passing game
and the guys get a little experience at the
plate.
Leach is in his sixth year of coaching. He
is accompanied by assistant coaches Zach
Stallkamp (junior varsity coach), Ben Bar-
ton, Andy Jones and Kyle Mawer.
Leach noted that this team has one of the
brightest outlooks going into the season of
any team that he has coached.
I am very excited about this years team,
said Leach. We have a lot of experience re-
turning from last years team and some new
players who are eager to play, especially
competing in such a competitive league and
a solid non-league schedule.
