Objectives- The student will: o Look at new words in different recipes o Learn to act out a role o Learn about a practical skill through reading and asking questions o See how reading can be connected to their lives o Gain experience looking at instructions Vocabularyo Bakery o Flour o Sugar o Cupcake o Mixer o Gingerbread o Cinnamon o Butter o Egg o Spatula o Measure o Ingredient o Oil MaterialsThe students will be given a box that contains several simple recipes and a recipe book for older students, a bakers hat and apron, a spatula, a mixing bowl, fake food for younger children and real things to mix like flour or oats for older children, measuring spoons, measuring cups, water, markers, paper, and maybe some play-doh so the children could make models of cupcakes and things. PropsThe students will have paper so that they could draw pictures of cakes they want to bake, or to copy down a recipe they like. They could also write down tips they had or things they learned about being a baker. The provided apron and bakers hat will allow the children to feel more in character while they explore the role by practicing measuring simple ingredients and mixing them.

The measuring spoons provided will also give the students a chance to gain an understanding of which measurements are smaller and which are larger, and what type of ingredients are used in larger quantities. Set-upI will put out the different measuring spoons, cups, and recipes on a table for the children to peruse. They can create pictures of what they think the cakes or other baked goods in the recipes will look like, and learn about measuring from the measuring spoons. When they feel comfortable, they will be provided some type of dry ingredient like oats or flour to practice measuring into a mixing bowl, and mixing with the spatula. They could also practice measuring out water into a bowl to see how the two are different. Open-Ended Questionso What are some potential challenges when baking things? o Are there patterns in the recipes for how much of certain ingredients were used? Which ingredients are used in greater quantities? o How should you treat ingredients to keep your space clean? o Does baking seem easy or difficult? Why? o What seems like the most interesting recipe to make? o What materials do you need when baking that we do not have in the classroom? Extension ActivityConnect this activity to math by having the students compare fractions seen in the measuring cups. They could think about what may happen if they were to use the wrong measurements for some ingredients in a recipe. They could try this at home with a parent, or just make a recipe of their choice to bring in for the class.
