ABSTRACT

Despite the safety principles and standards laid by the various organisations and institutes (IAED) towards the safety of workers/machine operators in workshops, these are hardly followed due to which the lives of various workers is always at stake. The report reflects a comprehensive study and deep analysis of the faulty environmental conditions prevailing in workshops of iitd that possess a great threat to the safety of students and other staffs working there. It critically analyses their ignorance attitude towards the lack of basic safety precautionary methods adopted there and collects data for the same especially in welding and workshops. It also emphasises on how the health of students is affected every year. The report enlists the various plausible causes of accidents and also suggests various recommendations and design aspects to avoid such cases.Further it is followed up by a discussion and conclusion that characterizes the importance of adopting certain design aspects and measures that reduce the risk of accidents and make it safe for use by students/ staffs.

discussions
the various reasons that might lead to serious accidents in workshops has been examined in the introduction and background data.this part of the report enlists the various reasons that why such unsafe features have been allowed to exist. one of the main reason for this is the casual attitude of the staff or management towards safety precautions. when we communicated to one of the ----- of the workshop department regarding this,he simply stated, there is very low possibility of such accidents and no such major hazard has occurred over the past years,so its not the priority.this ignorance attitude is the m ajor cause of existence of such features.it is a reflection of general human attitude that until something imperilment event occurs, big enough to grasp their attention, they wont realize the importance of adopting to standards. lack of money and resources to provide adequate and requisite design of

instruments are also responsible for their existence.since there is no body for inspection of such workshops and their environmental conditions, adequate measures has not been taken up even they are compulsory to be followed by law. also the staffs are not much strict and many a times students are allowed to work in workshops without proper shoes and clothes.students regular illness due to working atmosphere in workshops has failed to come into highlight due to which such issues continue to persist. Dearth of mock drill activities and disaster management strategies are also responsible for the negligence of safe designs and competent safety measures.these are some of the potential reasons that are responsible for the existence of such features still today.

In our next stage we wish to collect all the relevant data concerning various elements in the workshop and conduct a thorough study regarding what effect they have on our health by conducting various surveys.we also aim to collect data from the workshops and compare it with standards and analyse them from different points of view mentioned in the studies. we also intend to collect data regarding which of our body parts are more prone to be affected while carrying out different activities.since it is a prime right of the users to be safe while handling the equipments in workshop,so we intend to collect feedback from the students and regular users to avoid such happenings. after all the above study has been carried out,we propose to provide recommendations to improve the design aspect of the equipments and other elements of workshops. one key aspect is the provision of suitable personal protective equipments for all the users. we also aim to design a system that would keep a record of the complaints by students that they face so that proper and immediate steps can be taken to avoid it.other factors that need attention are proper ventilation, lighting, temperature and proper spacing of equipments and other tools.
