he deadly Ebola Epidemic reported to have entered Liberian territory after the outbreak in Guinea that has killed more than eighty persons in that neighboring country is causing panic among many Liberians with market women dealing in Bush meat otherwise known as Dry meat, complaining that they are losing customers because of a government announcement warning people to stay off the local cuisine for a while. Scientists say Ebola is transmitted to humans through several means with monkeys, gorillas, chimpanzees and other animals serving as carriers of the deadly virus and Liberias Health Minister Dr. Walter Gwenigale on Monday issued a warning to Liberians to desist from eating bush meat for now, cautioning County Superintendents to take the lead in working in their respective counties to advise the citizens from consuming bush meat. The bush meat business is a big market in Liberia and serves as a major source of income for a whole group of people ranging from hunters to marketers who purchase directly from the hunters to sellers on the local market, onward to restaurants and other food centers before reaching a vast consuming public. Liberia is one of the countries in the West African sub region with vast natural rain forest which has been used for hunting for centuries. In the southeastern Grand Gedeh, River Gee, Grand Kru and other counties hunting is an occupation for many. Monkey, one of the animals listed as a carrier of Ebola is a favorite bush meat for many Liberians, an aged old food and convincing people to stay away from a food they have been consuming for years is proving difficult. As deadly as the Ebola virus is, those relying on the bush meat market as their main source of income say their living is more important than prevention against Ebola as in separate interviews, marketers are contending that they are going out of business due to the pronouncement warning people to stay away from bush meat. MaTenneh Kamara, is a bush meat dealer at Monrovias Waterside Market, she expresses anger at the government for what she terms a means of sabotaging their business. She told FrontPageAfrica that business has gone bad since the government made the announcement. I heard it is through rumor that this new sickness comes from meat; so people are not buying our meat. This few days since they started announcing this Ebola thing, people are not buying, only the food sellers are buying and majority are not cooking meat again, said Ma Tenneh. I am losing everything; right now I am getting in debt with people. I took meat from people and they are not buying the meat; there you can see the meat on the table there. I believe the place they talking about the sickness coming from the people are not eating dry meat there. The women who can cook food, this meat is helping them. Let we all just pray let this whole thing finish. The meat dealer who said she has been dealing in bush meat for the past fifteen years told FPA she cannot comprehend the reason why the government is putting stop to a food that people have been eating for generations. She contends that even during the deadly civil war when food was scarce, Liberians were not exterminated adding that Ebola will not wipe out the entire country. They said the sickness came from Guinea and people in Guinea do not eat dry meat so they just trying to spoil our business, said Ma Tenneh. During the war they were eating human beings, that one na make them sick, that now they say that meat making people sick. They spoiling our business and it is our living. The people who are eating dog meat, what they will say about them? They just complaining about dry meat, people eating itchy dog, it is not killing them. They know how far the sickness coming from before they lying on meat. Ma Yassah, another woman dealing in the favorite food which is eaten either smoked or fresh and cooked in all kind of Liberian dishes including palm butter, Cassava Leaves, Torborgie and Pepper Soup, said that the Ebola epidemic is taking away a vital part of the Liberian way of life-its food because without bush meat some dishes are not worth cooking or eating. This is our living. Like before, time like this my meat finish. Myself I can eat meat; plenty people not buying

my meat again. You know anything whether that meat causing this sickness, it is only God hand we in, she said. The women who run or own local cook shops also reveal that the call made by the government through the ministry of Health is causing some shocks in their daily dealings with customers. I am not cooking dry meat again; the people say we must stop cooking dry meat until the tension can go down. They want check whether that the animal bringing the sickness, they want check so for that they say we must not cook dry meat yet, said Ma Hawa Abu, a local cook shop woman who has been in the business since 2005. Our customers say we should not cook dry meat. I used to cook meat, sometimes I used to buy L$3,000 meat every day, sometimes L$2,500. The dry meat women are crying because we are not buying from them again. My customers are managing small, small, they are buying small, small but the way they used to buy before when I was cooking dry meat they are not buying like that now. Some people like Torborgee with dry meat so since no dry meat, the buying is going down. Ma Hawa says that she is getting wary of the disease because they are compelled to take extra measures to keep them and their customers safe from the epidemic. All of us, we are afraid, because the way they say the thing can spread, it is plenty. I cant use glove because I am playing with food, when I use glove, how I will fix the Fufu; I put tide soap and chloride in water and my

customers can wash their hands before they eat. Confirming the existence of the Ebola virus in Liberia, on Monday, the government disclosed that out of the seven samples of suspected persons sent to France for testing, two cases returned confirming that two persons contracted the disease. Dr. Gwenigale said of the two, one person died while the other who happens to be a caretaker of the dead victim is still alive but under surveillance. Therefore the eating of bush meat or having sex during the epidemic would be a bad idea, something that was also buttressed by the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Director, Dr. Nestor Ndayimirije. I want to mention one point which is critical. It has been seen that monkeys, Gorillas, Chimpanzees can contract the disease and sometimes the hunters get these animals when they are sick, weak but not dead. So, the public needs to know that even if they say that they have killed that animal, it may be sick. It may be in the incubation period, he said. So, the advice will be here for the public not to buy bush meat for a period till the outbreak is over. This means that after the last case we count forty-two days, which means one month and a half after the end of the outbreak. This is also a motivating factor to stop this epidemic, so that people can enjoy the bush meat as before. The Ebola outbreak has caused so much anxiety across the country and it is like the nation is sitting on a ticking time bomb.

Commentary

MADAM YVONNE WOLO, a program analyst at the United Nations Development Program struck a cautionary note to participants attending the UNDPs Strengthen Transparency Accountability Oversight and Participation(STAOP) project, last week when she warned that unless Liberians turn away from corrupt practices by embracing the procurement reform program, the country will remain undeveloped. THE WARNING from the UNDP executive comes at a time when numerous Liberian government ministries and agencies are adopting a policy of non-cooperation with the Public Procurement Concessions Commission when it comes to abiding and fulfilling the regulations of the PPCC. THIS IS WHY WE welcome the UNDP and other stakeholders effort to work with integrity institutions, including the PPCC in improving transparency and accountability in Liberia. WHAT MANY, including the current leadership are either refusing to accept or simply may be ignorant to is the fact that the PPCC is the first line of defense in the war against corruption. THIS IS WHERE concessions and contracts are screened, scrutinized and dissected for possible breach of the laws of the land. THIS IS ALL the more reason why the Sirleaf government must do all it can to increase funding for agencies like the PPCC if it is really serious about boosting its accountability and transparency record and convincing the international community that it has the political will the fight corruption. THE EXECUTIVE branch must turn a blind eye to officials who continue to run to the President whenever they do not get an easy pass in the PPCC process. WHAT THE government should be doing is empowering the PPCC with more funding to increase its staff with professionals who will work with the various government ministries and agencies in making sure that their papers are processed properly and within the confines of the PPCC. WITH MANY Liberians unhappy and unconvinced about the administrations political will in the war against corruption, support for integrity institutions could go a long way to improving the governments image and perceptions in the eyes of a skeptical nation yet to be convinced that the governments declared war on corruption is anything but a bunch of words intended to appease the concerns of the international community.

LIBERIAS UNDERDEVELOPMENT AND THE NAGGING PROCUREMENT DILEMMA

FOR THE 2017/18 ELECTIONS IN SIERRA LEONE

Sulay B. Conteh, sulayconteh2018@gmail.com, Contributing Writer
with Bio. This is the governing political gospel of the Bio Camp and come what may Bio must be the SLPP Flagbearer in 2017/18. SLPP must resolutely reject any alternative philosophy if it is to win the next elections. But has Charles F. Margai not tried several times and failed in every case? What can we also say about Dr. John Karefa-Smart who tried until death without ever succeeding? What then is so special about Bio that the fate of these diligent gentlemen can never befall him in this of his must-win political ambition? That said and done, APC has firmly embarked on rewriting the national constitution and conducting general census before the 2017/18 elections. APC will also have to choose the Electoral Commissioner and provide security for the elections. The good thing is that SLPP is not the least bothered by what shape and form of any of these will take and it will impact the 2017/18 elections. The Pa-o-pa Camp is having great time with Bio so long their divine will of having Bio as the Flagbearer of the SLPP Party is done. Whether SLPP wins the elections or not is all a different story to this Pa-o-pa Camp. Now even before the constitution is written or census done, APC is busy taking over the so-called SLPP stronghold. We said in our last article that on the directive of President Dr. Koroma, Ambassador Foh deserted his post and was in town for a special mission. That mission turned out to be something related with making in-roads in the SLPP stronghold in the South and East. Foh was the Presidents appointed Special Eye to oversee the Paramount Chief elections in Jimmy Bagbo Chiefdom, Bo District. In this heartland of Bo with the strongest SLPP sensation, Foh was given Le 1.5 billion to buy over the 1500 eligible Chiefdom Councilor votes in the election. This implies that each Councilor was allotted the sum of Le 1.0 million to have the APC Paramount Chief elected. This news was so much excitement to the cash-trapped Councilors that they told Foh that in fact only Le 0.5 million per Councilor was enough to get the will of the APC done in the election. That was the done deal and that was indeed how the APC Coker (the current Paramount Chief of Jimmy Bagbo Chiefdom) won the recent election. So Victor Foh not only made away with Le 750 million in his deep pocket, but also easily got the vote to have APC Coker elected into the Chiefship of Jimmy Bagbo Chiefdom. This buying-over strategy via excessive use of national revenue is being repeated in several other Chiefdoms in the SLPP strongholds in the Eastern and Southern Caucuses of Sierra Leone. So by 2017/18, APC would have taken over the entire country. One then wonders why APC is spending so much for ordinary Chiefdom-level elections. We are all aware of what happened in the last elections and we are now under no illusions that similar things will happen on even much greater magnitude in the 2017/18 elections. APC is desperate for the Chiefdoms in the SLPP strongholds so that the census and voter lists can be inflated in its favor in these regions. Conversely, APC can work with the Paramount Chiefs to suppress the census and voter registrations in the SLPP strongholds in the Eastern and Southern Caucuses of Sierra Leone. This implies that while few will be registered in the SLPP stronghold, a massively inflated voter list will be rolled out for the APC stronghold in the Northern Caucus. Either way will give APC the numbers needed to decisively win the elections in 2017/18. Now, how could anyone read this as anything less than a stern warning to those wishful proponents of the purported done deal between SLPP and APC which requires Koroma to handover power to Bio come 2017/18? SLPP must wake up now or it will again be doomed under its ever-enduring and self-comforting spirit of unrealistic political calculations. APC has Fussy Math Professors specialized in Elections Rigging and it is therefore no good omen for SLPP to get miscalculating things at this point in time. These same irrational calculations made us have APC rule in disguise for 11 years, from 1996 to 2007, under the late President Ahmed Tejan Kabbah. So a word for a wise is sufficient. Lunta!

he ever-enduring and self-comforting spirit of SLPP (Sierra Leone Peoples Party) will again doom this Elite Party in the would-be General Elections in 2017/18. It is all but loud and clear that SLPP, especially under the stewardship of Julius Maada Bio, will never learn its lessons. It is no hidden secrete that winning elections in the Third World starts with national censor, followed by voter registration. In between that, however, there has to be endless efforts to win over Chiefdom Paramount Chiefs. This is the start of gaining the numbers that actually counts for winning elections of whatever nature. This is even more compelling when it has to do with what is generally accepted as the diehard caucuses of contending political parties. You have to control you own end or you are doomed when others make in-roads into your stronghold. In Sierra Leone, the Southern and Eastern Caucuses are generally known as the SLPP strongholds while the Northern Caucus is the no-go zone exclusively dedicated to APC Party. The Western Area is a region always up for grab by who outsmarts the other(s). We saw in the just concluded 2012 elections how APC desecrated the Southern and Eastern Caucuses in the so-called APC in-road into SLPP stronghold. Prior to the elections, so much was said and written about this in-road and yet so little was done by the then SLPP Party Leadership to blunt out the so-called APC in-road. SLPP relied and still continues to rely so hopelessly on the Noisy Youths (the so-called Bios Eyes) who use Strength instead of Knowledge to map out successful strategies for winning a political course. To our least imagination, APC scored startling votes in the Southern and Eastern Caucuses in that election and we all wondered how. Whistleblowers leaked out so much on the game-changing strategies in that election and yet not a single concrete action was taken in that direction. SLPP sat there like a lost child in the wilderness naively wishing for a mystical rescue by the Holy Angel. Such was the fate of SLPP in the just concluded 2012 elections and such will exactly be the fate of SLPP again in the would-be 2017/18 elections. After the reckless loss to APC, SLPP (the Party of endless endurance and self-comfort), came up with so many false scenarios to deceptively comfort its diehard followers. First, it was petitioning the elections in the Supreme Court of Sierra Leone under the APC Government. In so doing even, the petition case was never put together within the time span stipulated by laws of Sierra Leone, which gave the legal basis to APC to altogether throw out the case as nonsense. Next, was the rumor of power-sharing, as we later learned that that too was another soft strategy to cool off a frustrated crowd. Then was the Bios Special-Copter Flight to Conakry (SCFC), which indeed sealed up everything else in favor of APC. That Package of SCFC Peace pursued by Bio was craftily well loaded with massive handshakes. Bio, the top leadership and the respected elders of SLPP (including Pa Belewa) all got beautiful shares of that epic generosity by APC. The SCFC peace trip took whatever steam that remained in the struggle and the story completely changed a done deal for 2017/18. Indeed, the game became a done deal, the people were stunningly betrayed and the millions of SLPP diehards across the country today live in that shadow of mystery. All we heard next was that the Merciful Father of the Nation (His Excellency Dr. Earnest Bai Koroma) will do all it takes to secede power to Bio in the 2017/18 elections. So all SLPP needed again was to maintain Bio as the Flagbearer of the SLPP Party. This was not an ordinary lesson but a somber lecture to a stubborn child, right? Then we must have to tell you that you must have your brain entirely scooped out to understand such a done deal. So the story has remained since and Bio has ever since been touted as the Saint of the SLPP Party. The Bios Eyes are everywhere using excessive noise and brute strength to quieten anyone who dear says otherwise. Dr. Earnest Bai Koroma failed in his first attempt but then succeeded in his second to be the President of Sierra Leone and so shall it be

JACKSON GEORGE ST. PETER CLAVER HIGH BUCHANAN It is very sad that we are here once again where corruption is highlighted in the reporting. From my analysis, there are three issues involve in this country of ours. The first being, the leadership does not have the country at heart. The second is the incompetence of people in high offices and lastly, the corrupt nature of some of us as Liberians. Since this is not a medium where I can in detail discuss my three pointers, I will sum it out in one paragraph below. A leadership of substance will first seek competent individuals with the necessary skills to perform to rebuild Liberia. Just because a person has a masters degree from the United States does not necessarily means that that person is competent to head a ministry. Some of these so-called US trained have not had any position of magnitude in the United States specific t...o their learned discipline and comparable to what they have in Liberia. It is like taking a foot doctor to carry out a heart surgery. I am not surprised at all. If you put bad product in your showcase, it is bad product you will sell. I am not insinuating that there arent capable Liberians, it is just that the capable ones will not be running home for fast break. You will have to sort them out and reward them and they will make the ultimate sacrifice. We need Liberians with love of country with the mentality that the cycle is big enough to take all of us. We must remember that poverty is a crime against humanity and when a few take away millions for their personal use and cause suffering of the majority, the few must understand that they are committing crime against humanity and in the social justice system, they must be brought to justice. We must begin using the terminology that poverty is a crime. It is a crime because the ones that are corrupt are perpetuating the cycle of poverty thereby denying the poor access to a better standard of living. JEROME SAKPEIDER MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA My personal views: Liberia has always had inept and unpatriotic leadership since 1822. The difference in recent times is that the world is now a global village interconnected by the internet and other forms of communication. In essence, issues are being reported to the global community and we are learning about them as they happen. In years past, it would have taken another few years to even learn about this kind of disgraceful management of Liberia's resources. For people old enough to remember King William V.S. Tubman's administration, do you think it was any better? DASH S. WILSON TOP COMMENTER WILMINGTON UNIVERSITY Here we go again about accountability, corruption and transparency in the Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf's government. The international community doesn't have confidence in EJS. We have been vindicated from our assertions again. JAY WION TOP COMMENTER WORKS AT NPRC Where did the money go? The same place where our corrupt leaders put our stolen money: in overseas foreign bank accounts, buying new homes in the US and elsewhere, building new homes in Liberia for themselves, for their many lovers, buying expensive cars and just enjoying life as the poor in Liberia struggle to feed their families. As for Ellen and the Sirleaf Clan, and their Congua extended families and coward native lavkeys where everyone is a "cousin," it is business as usual. The only language these crooks understand is their kind of language that they employed to gain state power. But we can use massive people power nonviolent peaceful protests to run them out of power. And what better time to start than on April 12, 2014. We call now on civic society groups, the 85 percent unemployed, students and teachers in the... broken down education sector, the neglected health sector and its poorly paid healthcare workers, market womenand petty traders struggling to make ends meet, and the vanguard, fearless, brave 33,000 strong potent University of Liberia student body and the only vibrant national opposition group in the country to take the lead in spearheading this much needed, overdue movement for REGIME CHANGE in Liberia. Uncle Sam is ready to support this call for regime change. Power concedes nothing without demand, it never has and it never will, said Frederick Douglas. This woman Ellen will give in to our demands for regime change if we can sustain it for weeks or months by paralyzing the govt and bringing life to a standstill.

DEBUNKING GOL ON EBOLA CLAIMS

YOU WRITE; WE PUBLISH; THEY READ!

Education Today, Inc. (ET-Liberia) is dismayed by the recent press release of the Movement for Justice in Liberia (MOJIL);referring to the Government of Liberias claim of Ebola presence in Liberia as a blackmail and money eating tactics. We have observed over the period that there are compelling truths to substantiate the government of Liberia claim. Outside the control of the government are many other credible bodies and institutions that have corroborated the assertion of the government. The World Health Organization is closely working with the Liberian Ministry of Health and Social Welfare in handling suspected cases. The United States Embassy in Liberia issued a citizens update saying; the Liberian Ministry of health and social welfare and the world health organization are following contacts from the initial taxi, the taxi driver, and the motorcycle driver that have been identified and there is coordinating identification, tracking, and preparing isolation plans. The Government of France has not come up to deny the claim of the Government of Liberia that specimen were tested positive in that foreign nation. MOJIL says it conducted a thorough investigation and research before debunking the Government of Liberias claim. We doubt seriously that it takes few days to draw such a conclusion on so grave an issue that borders on the overall health of our nation in particular and the West African Sub-region at large. MOJIL failed to produce tangibles from their purported investigation. We have not known the name of the health institutions they visited. We are yet know the name of the health workers that they interacted with. We advise that information dissemination concerning the existence of Ebola in Liberia be void of Political sentiments and be viewed as a national concern. Education Today, Inc. (ET-Liberia) admonishes the General Public to heed to the Ministry of Health & Social Welfares precautionary methods in avoiding contraction of the deadly disease. James-Emmanuel D. The Editor,

IN THE FACE OF EBOLA, WILL LIBERIA ALWAYS BE A COUNTRY OF CURING AND NOT A PREVENTIVE ONE?

From a sick bed (thankfully typhoid at least), I flipped the pages of newspapers and browsed various online news sources. Then I get constrained to write on why our country will not be preventive but rather always choose to find cure after contamination over preventive measures. (And unfortunately, theres no known cure or vaccine for this one as of yet.) Not even in the face of one of the worst deadly viruses ever to hit our country is enough for our authorities to exercise more preventive and cautious measures. Just within a week, at least seven Liberians have so far died from Ebola, including the tracked lady from Foya to Monrovia to Harbel, according to a Health Ministry disclosure on Thursday. Additionally, reports that about 13 health workers are currently quarantined in Lofa due to Ebola suspicion warrant urgency. I mean this is rather scary!!! While faraway Saudi Arabia, Canada and even relatively closer Senegal have all decided to take preventive measures against this generation-threatened epidemic called Ebola, Liberia is still dragging her feet as far as preserving Liberians and residents-alike from this virus some have even preferred HIV-AIDS over. Can you imagine? As Liberia continues to debate whether it should close its borders with neighboring, infested Guinea and even with Sierra Leone that reports

suspected cases of Ebola, Saudi Arabia has made no secret of its fear for Ebola despite the mammoth distance between the Middle East and West Africa. So, it wasted no time in taking a rather undisputed decision to deny Hajj visas to Muslim travelers coming from both Guinea and Liberia (and probably to soon extend same visa denial to Sierra Leone). Senegal, for its proximity and as a neighbor to Guinea, neither debated the issue but closed its border to Guinea. The North American country of Canada had to isolate one of its nationals who had left here for several days. But for Liberia? Whoa. Its still a matter of debate whether it should close its borders with Guinea (and if I may add, those with Sierra Leone) in the glaring face that all of Liberias seven Ebola deaths wouldnt have happened if infested and suspected Ebola victims had not come from Guinea. I will personally now take a direct vibe at Dr. Walter Gwenigale and Dr. (Senator) Peter Coleman, current and former health ministers respectively, who are leading the charge for us to not shut down our borders with Guinea (and I maintain, those with Sierra Leone). Dr. Gwenigale, during a recent news conference cited a Geneva Convention under some International Health Regulations that prohibit us from doing so even in the face of a tsunamic-like Ebola. Dont close the country when we have a situation like this but we can put people in closed areas and prevent them from contaminating others, Dr. Gwenigale justified non-border closure measures as he quoted whatever health regulation. With all due respect to the learned health expert, and with all commendations to Minister Gwenigale for the Ministrys efforts so far in helping to curb the virus, I think he and all those who insist in abiding by these International Health Regulations need to know that it will be the very Geneva and other Western groups that would surface here in a rather-late approach to curb the situation while at the same time pumping and withdrawing funds from such situation when it shall have reached boiling or (God forbid) uncontrollable point. I then wonder if Senegal is not also a signature of this so-called Geneva health treaty. Then Dr. (Senator) Colemans stressing of commerce and trade between Liberia and Guinea is probably the worst disgusting one. That we get bitter-balls and peppers from Guinea means that the entire nation should perish? The argument that we need to monitor those going and coming through the borders sounds so weak and sickly like an infested Ebola patient. Lest I be misunderstood: these two health experts may mean well for Liberia and I no way intent to question them professionally except that I feel professionals at times stick too much to the rules at the detriment of the very profession they are protecting unknowingly. I also recognize the Governments efforts through the Health Ministry: regular update of information on Ebola, citing other preventive measures, the arrival of body suits for health workers, among others but such as suggested above, is important. But Liberias problem of always wanting to take cures or vaccines or treatments instead of preventing sicknesses is very visible in the countrys prioritized primary health care delivery opposed to a prioritized preventive health care system. There are so much efforts and resources that go into primary health care than a preventive or awareness system despite the common saying that Prevention is better than cure which health authorities themselves always advertize. And so, may we finally now suspend whatever Geneva health regulation forbidding us to shut down our borders during such a national emergency and proceed with fighting Ebola? May the National Legislature now desist from even debating whether it should declare a National Emergency on the matter and proceed immediately with measures that will help safe our country from an emerging endemic that would potentially rank second to the just ended civil war in terms of the destruction of precious Liberian lives? Seven lost lives and 13 quarantined health workers are not only enough to claim our immediate attention, but to also claim our urgent actions including the closure of the Guinean (and Sierra Leonean) borders in addition to the US$1.2 million being sought. Yes, our borders are very porous (I guess as Senegals borders with Guinea are) and could be very difficult to do, but this would limit, in my mind, the rate of even suspected Ebola cases. After all, if the DRC and Sudan no longer mention Ebola, of course we can overcome it too but again, God helps those who help themselves. Nat Bayjay nbayjay2010@gmail.com

EBOLA DEATHS RISING

A
Monrovia woman confirmed to have traveled to the Firestone Plantation Camp in Liberia with the deadly Ebola virus has been pronounced dead. Health and Social Welfare Minister Dr. Walter Gwenigale told the weekly Ministry of Information press briefing Thursday that the death now brings to total death in Liberia since the outbreak started to seven. Said Dr. Gwenigale: The lady we have been following from Foyah to Chicken Soup Factory died last night. That information you people should know. I told you before that she was traveling with a child from Foyah in the taxi, that child is now sick and is currently being quarantined and observed. We have a total of seven deaths now. Dr. Gwenigale also revealed that another woman who was under observation in Foyah but taken away by her family under the guise of taking her to to her pastor, has also died. We first came and told you people that we had had four deaths, two in Foyah, two that came to Liberia, went back to Guinea and died there. Now we have added to those four, the lady who we were following in Firestone and the other lady that was in Foyah, so that will make it six. We are also adding to that list, a 25-year-old young man, who went to Tappita, he had fever for three days. At the time the doctors started to investigate, he started vomiting openly, so that makes it seven. We do not know whether all of these people are proven by laboratory tests, we do not know whether it is Ebola but by definition, we are treating them as if it is. Minister Gwenigale said the health ministry is taking every rumor regarding the Ebola case with seriousness. Whatever rumor we get, we investigate it and if you have reliable rumor about somebody in Matadi or Congotown, let us get good information so we can follow these rumors because we dont want to take anything lightly. You know there are some of you people who are here are reporters

TWO NEW CASES IN LIBERIA, HEALTH MINISTER CONFIRMS, BRING TOTAL TO SEVEN
The lady we have been following from Foyah to Chicken Soup Factory died last night. That information you people should know. I told you before that she was traveling with a child from Foyah in the taxi, that child is now sick and is currently being quarantined and observed. We have a total of seven deaths now. - Dr. Walter Gwenigale, Minister of Health and Social Welfare

who take information to your papers and it is somebody else that will use that information that you carry to put out what they want to put out. Others will say irrespective of what you say to them, they will write what they want to. We know some of those. If you do not want to help us, dont undermine us. Dr. Gwenigale dismissed suggestions that the ministry has been somersaulting in dispensing information regarding the Ebola spread. Now, this language when I use it people say Ive somersaulted. But we are treating each case as a suspect only. When we have confirmed it by laboratory tests, then we can say we have it. The fact that we are treating it as it is Ebola prevents the spread so that others may not be contaminated. Dr. Gwenigale said the ministry is also looking into another reports from Grand Gedeh involving a Bassa man who died suddenly. People thought he was dealing with an animal that got caught in the trap or something. We do not have all the facts but any death that is sudden, we have to investigate it and you people are the ones that can help us. The minister reminded reporters of a parable given by a WHO official earlier in the week to stress the

importance the ministry and the Liberian government has attached to the Ebola saga. The WHO man made a statement and said that if you are in the house and the leopard or lion enter the house, you have to decide whether you want to close the house, so that the lion can eat you up or try to get the lion to go outside. This disease is here, we have the disease. Its not people that are crossing to bring it, it is people that have died here, that have spread it to other people that we are trying to follow to contain it. The minister said a number of international health experts arrived in Liberia Wednesday to assist local authorities in curbing the disease. Yesterday, a plane landed at Spriggs Payne Airfield, that came with MSF people to help us and one of them were one of those who went to Margibi to teach people about the proper clothing to wear when they are among the patients. Today or tomorrow, were getting two more people, one from Atlanta in CDC and the CDC person coming from Kenya. We are also expecting other MSF people from Europe. These people are expect that are coming to help us, to show us how to protect you people and what have not and tell us what to do. And as they come and they see

the severity of this, they will also be helping us to mobilize funds. The minister said authorities have already estimated $US1.2 million to fight the disease but is still hoping for the government to pitch in. We wrote our minister of Finance and said we are looking for this money from our donors but please give us some money because we have to send money to people when they get to the border. All the people that are sending us information, they have to have scratch cards for them. Dr. Gwenigale said the government has already made available $US250,000 while the Mano River Union has chipped in. We received that check yesterday. The Mano River Union people give us another US$10,000. Since we have people all out, you know that that money has been used already. So we are accounting for that money, we dont touch money. I have finance people who touch money. The latest woman to die from the Ebola virus at Firestone contracted Ebola while caring for her sister who died of Ebola in Foya, Lofa County, Liberia. She was at Firestone under observation in isolation, but unfortunately left the Foya area late night on March 29 and traveled via taxi to Monrovia to see her husband.

Five other people were in the taxi with her, including the driver. She then took a pehn pehn (motorcycle) to a nearby clinic, where she was seen and released. This woman is the only person in Liberia confirmed to have Ebola at this time. Authorities are said to be on the lookout for at least 40 persons who may or may not have crossed path with the deceased woman. Until her death, the woman and her family were being quarantined in their home until they could be moved to an appropriate facility. The Health Ministry is monitoring those who came in contact with the woman in the initial taxi driver, and the motorcycle driver, who have been identified and are being followed closely. The World Health Organization and local health authorities are coordinating identification, tracking, and preparing isolation plans. The U.S. State Department reported on its website this week that the risk of transmission remains very low as Ebola is contracted through contact with blood and body fluids or contaminated articles. Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to Ebola virus, though 8-10 days is most common.

LMOST 40 years after Ebola emerged from the jungles of Africa as one of the worlds most lethal diseases, scientists are beginning to close in on treatments that may be able to stop the virus. People who are at risk of infection have little protection for now against a virus that kills as many as 90% of those it strikes. The latest outbreak, in Guinea, has infected 86 people, killing 59 of them, with suspected cases in neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). Still, the agency said the risk to travelers is low and is not recommending any travel restrictions to Guinea. The relative rarity of Ebola outbreaks, and the fact that they are largely limited to rural areas of poor African nations, makes the disease an unattractive target for big drug makers. Instead, much of the research against Ebola has been funded by the US government. Tekmira Pharmaceuticals Corporation, for example, began its first human trial of a drug in January with backing from the US Department of Defence. "Its a really exciting time to be working on Ebola right now," said Erica Ollmann Saphire, a professor at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla, California, who is leading a consortium of 15 public and private institutions to develop treatments to fight the virus. "There are already candidate cocktails that can be used in an emergency," he said. Ebola is among a group of diseases that are so deadly

for big drug companies, said Stephan Guenther, head of the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine in Hamburg, Germany. "If you count all the cases of Ebola since the discovery, its below 10,000, so its definitely not of commercial interest," he said. Mr Guenther led a team of researchers that showed an experimental treatment called favipiravir, developed by a unit of Japans Fujifilm Holdings Corporation as a treatment against influenza, cleared Ebola virus and prevented mice from dying in a study published last month. He said the most promising drug in development is a cocktail of antibodies developed by Mapp Biopharmaceutical, a closely held firm in San Diego. The treatment has been developed with the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the National Institutes of Health and the Defense Threat Reduction Agency. In research with monkeys, the cocktail prevented 43% of those with symptoms of Ebola from dying in a study published last year in Science Translational Medicine. Previous studies showed the treatment, called MB-003, saved all of the monkeys when given an hour after exposure to the virus, and two-thirds of the animals survived when treated 48 hours after exposure. any of these diseases are only a plane ride away", Dr Monroe said. The US is well prepared to handle infected patients on its soil with 20 CDC quarantine stations in place at US airports that are designed to deal with anyone who has symptoms of a wide range of infectious illnesses, including Ebola, according to spokeswoman Christine Pearson. Despite the outbreak, there are no special requests or guidelines to airlines about Ebola, though the CDC has issued a travel alert, she said. "The time it takes to travel from rural Guinea to anywhere in the US is more than enough time to incubate the virus and be symptomatic," Council on Foreign Relations senior fellow Laurie Garrett said in New York. "Even if you could get on an airplane, youd be carried out on a gurney." The CDC team arrived in Guineas capital, Conakry, late on Monday after receiving a request for assistance from Guineas health ministry and the World Health Organisation (WHO), said Dr Monroe,

and easy to spread that they pose a risk to national security, according to the US centres for disease control and prevention. The agency lists the virus as a category A bioterrorism agent, alongside anthrax and smallpox. Tekmiras product, known as TKM-Ebola, is being developed under a $140m contract with the Department of Defenses medical countermeasure

systems biodefence therapeutics joint product management office. Tekmira, based in Burnaby, Canada, this month won fast-track designation from the US Food and Drug Administration to develop the experimental treatment. The US National Institutes of Health last week gave a fiveyear grant of as much as $28m to MS Saphires group, which

is collaborating on antibody cocktails to fight Ebola. She said she did not know if any of the treatments were being used in the Guinea outbreak. While HIV, the AIDS-causing virus that also jumped from animals to humans in Africa, has spawned dozens of approved drugs and a $14bn market, the small number of Ebola cases is a deterrent

the Ebola virus in laboratory experiments, according to a study in 2012. GlaxoSmithKline last year paid 250m for Okairos, a Swiss vaccine developer with earlystage products against diseases including Ebola. Inovio Pharmaceuticals, a Blue Bell, Pennsylvania-based company, said last year its experimental vaccine against Ebola protected guinea pigs against the virus. Ebola can cause sudden fever and intense weakness which is followed by vomiting, diarrhoea and internal and external haemorrhaging. The disease has a fatality rate of as much as 90%, according to the WHO, making it one of the most feared infectious diseases. The virus, first identified in the 1970s near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is transmitted to people through the blood and other secretions of wild animals such as chimpanzees, gorillas, bats and porcupines, according to the WHO. Humans transmit the virus to each other through contact with blood and other body fluids. The aid group Medecins Sans Frontieres has begun opening units to isolate patients in areas of Guinea where Ebola cases are concentrated to try to stop the disease from spreading, spokeswoman Julie Damond said on Wednesday.

GENEVA team of US scientists will help to track the path of the Ebola outbreak that has killed at least 87 people in Africa. There have been 134 cases of the incurable virus which is fatal in about 90% of cases in Guinea and Liberia, the World Health Organization said on Wednesday. A five-person team from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) arrived in Guinea on Monday. They will help to contact anyone who has been in touch with infected people, CDC official Steve Monroe said. A second team may go to Liberia and the agency is assessing the need for more laboratory assistance to analyse samples, he said. Last week, when Canadian officials feared that a severely ill patient who had recently been to Liberia may have been infected with deadly Ebola, the US took notice. It was a "false alarm that reminded us that

who is deputy director for the agencys National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases. First identified in 1976 near the Ebola River in what is now the Democratic Republic of Congo, the virus is transmitted to people through blood and other secretions of wild animals such as chimpanzees,

gorillas, bats and porcupines, according to the WHO. Humans transmit the virus to each other through contact with blood and other body fluids. A WHO report on the 1976 outbreak wrote of alarming bleeding symptoms including "slow oozing from gums to brisk haemorrhage from multiple sites in fulminating

cases". The report concluded that, with an 88% mortality rate, the new disease was the deadliest on record except for rabies. The virus is one of a handful of diseases that are so deadly that they pose a risk to national security, according to the CDC, which lists the virus as a Category A bioterrorism

agent, along with anthrax and smallpox. Since 1976, outbreaks from various forms of the virus have surfaced periodically in Africa. The virus revisited the Congo in 1995 and again in 2007, killing hundreds of people each time as it spread through families and hospitals. In Uganda, 149 people died in a 2007 outbreak. The last time the virus was found in West Africa was in 1994, when a single person was found with the disease in Cte dIvoire, according to the WHO. While the virus is unlikely to leave the continent, according to most experts, the stigma and fear associated with Ebola can prompt people who catch it to flee local communities and seek care in hospitals outside the affected area, spreading the virus within the continent, said Ms Garrett, who won a Pulitzer Prize as a reporter for Newsday covering the 1995 outbreak in the Congo. "The most crucial thing is to identify whos infected, remove them from the general population and clean up the hospitals to stop panic exodus."

LIBERIA REPORTS SUSPECTED EBOLA OUTBREAK UNCONNECTED TO GUINEA

onrovia - said Thursday it was dealing with its first suspected Ebola case thought to be unconnected to the epidemic raging in Guinea and to have originated separately within its borders. If confirmed, the case in the eastern town of Tapeta would mark a worrying development in the fight against Ebola, as cases so far have been attributed to people returning with the infection from neighbouring Guinea, where 84 people have died. "We have a case in Tapeta where a hunter who has not had any contact with anyone coming from Guinea got sick," chief medical officer Bernice Dahn said. "He was rushed to the hospital and died 30 minutes later. He never had any interaction with someone suspected to be a carrier of the virus and he has never gone to Guinea. This an a isolated case." The fruit bat, thought to be the host of the highly contagious Ebola virus, is a delicacy in the region straddling Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone, and experts suspect huntsmen may be the source of the outbreak. Tapeta, a small town in the eastern county of Nimba, is 400 kilometres (250 miles) from the epicentre of the Ebola outbreak in southern Guinea, at least a five-hour drive and

much further from the border than other suspected cases. "The huntsman has 500 traps in the forest. He felt sick in the forest and was rushed to the hospital," Dahn told AFP, adding that seven new patients brought the total suspected Ebola cases in Liberia to 14. The tropical virus leads to haemorrhagic fever, and which causes muscle pain, weakness, vomiting, diarrhoea and in severe cases, organ failure and unstoppable bleeding. Six people have died, Dahn said, since Liberia reported its first cases of haemorrhagic fever last month, raising the previous toll by two.

Of the deaths, two are laboratory-confirmed Ebola cases -- a woman who died in hospital in the northern county of Lofa, and her sister who visited her. The sister was allowed to return home to Monrovia before being hospitalised in the nearby Firestone Hospital, and the authorities had isolated and were monitoring her, her family and others with whom she may have had contact. "I have just received a call that the lady who was at Firestone Hospital after being confirmed Ebola virus positive died this morning," Dahn said. The tropical virus can be

transmitted to humans from wild animals, and between humans through direct contact with another's blood, faeces or sweat. Sexual contact, or the unprotected handling of contaminated corpses, can also lead to infection. No treatment or vaccine is available, and the World Health Organization said on Wednesday the fatality rate in Guinea so far stands at 65 percent, with the virus mainly hitting adults aged 15 to 59. "We are now keeping surveillance on 44 people who have been in contact with the cases reported," Dahn said.

hen disease strikes in the developing world, like the current Ebola outbreak in Guinea, doctors, nurses and epidemiologists from international organizations fly in to help. So do anthropologists. Understanding local customs and fears can go a long way in getting communities to cooperate with international health care workers, says Barry Hewlett, a medical anthropologist at Washington State University. Otherwise medical efforts can prove fruitless, says Hewlett, who was invited to join the Doctors Without Borders Ebola team during a 2000

outbreak in Uganda. There are anthropologists on the current team in Guinea as well. Before the World Health Organization and Doctors Without Borders started bringing in anthropologists, medical staff often had a difficult time convincing families to bring their sick loved ones to clinics and isolation wards. In Uganda, Hewlett remembers, people were afraid of the international health care workers. "The local people thought that the Europeans in control of the isolation units were in a body parts business," he says. "Their loved ones would go into the isolation units and they would never see them come out." Because of the high mortality rate, virtually every Ebola victim died. To prevent the

further spread of the disease, medical workers "would zip [the bodies] up in a body bag." And health care workers would not always notify relatives of a death because of the need to dispose of the body quickly, Hewlett wrote in a report on his experiences in Uganda. "The anger and bad feelings about not being informed were directed toward healthcare workers in the isolation unit," he noted. "This fear could have been averted by allowing family members to see the body in the bag and allowing family members to escort the body to the burial ground." In addition, he says, the large tarps surrounding isolation units were removed so family members could see and talk with a sick relative. And medical team members were

encouraged to attend funeral services as a sign of respect. Today, efforts to contain such outbreaks must be "culturally sensitive and appropriate," he says. "Otherwise people are running away from actual care that is intended to help them." One key mission for anthropologists is to help doctors understand how a local population perceives disease. In sub-Saharan Africa, he found, when death comes quickly the locals blame sorcery. So they may not necessarily believe that there's a disease that can be transmitted via contact with bodily fluids, as is the case with Ebola. In Uganda, as the death rate rose during the 2000 Ebola epidemic, the local communities came to see Ebola as a type of gemo or bad spirit that kills people for not honoring the gods. So while they did not believe that a virus was the villain, says Hewlett, they did hew to traditional beliefs that if you stand too close to a person with gemo, it's easy for the spirit to catch you. And that's helpful information for doctors whose goal is isolating patients to contain an Ebola outbreak.

oreign mining firms have locked down operations in Guinea and pulled out some international staff, executives said, as the death toll from suspected cases of Ebola there hit 83. Five new suspected infections were reported in the last 24 hours, the UN's World Health Organisation (WHO) said, bringing the total to 127. Medical charity Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has warned of an unprecedented epidemic that is testing weak health systems across West Africa. Suspected cases of one of the world's most lethal infectious diseases have also been reported in neighbouring Liberia and Sierra Leone. The epicentre of Guinea's two-month-old outbreak has been in the southeast, close to its main iron ore reserves. The country is also the world's top exporter of bauxite, the raw material used in aluminium production, and has rich deposits gold. "Everyone is practising precautionary strict hygiene but there has been no real impact on production so far," a senior executive at a mining company told Reuters news agency. The executive said he had been placed on extended leave, while other companies were preventing people from entering or leaving their mines. Firms were more concerned by what was happening in the densely populated capital Conakry than in remote mining sites in the interior, where controls were easier to put in place, he added. 'Health workers infected' The WHO has reported 12 suspected cases and four deaths in the ocean-front city of two million people. Gregory Hartl, the organisation's spokesman, said all the cases in Conakry were linked to one man who came from the central Guinean town of Dobala, about 300km away. "Unfortunately, this one person infected both family members and health care workers when he went to Conakry for medical attention and died," Hartl told Reuters in Geneva. Brazilian iron ore miner Vale said its VBG joint venture with BSG Resources (BSGR) - the mining arm of Israeli billionaire Beny Steinmetz's business conglomerate - had pulled its six international staff out of Guinea. "The expatriates have been transferred temporarily to their home countries," Vale said in an emailed statement in Brazil. "The local employees ... have been given leave from work until there is more accurate information about the risks of the disease." There has not been any official statement from the chamber of mines but the executive said mining firms had been calling each other to discuss the best response. "People are locking down camps and keeping movements to a minimum," the executive added. Neighbouring Senegal has closed its land borders with Guinea, and countries across the region have taken precautionary measures, including banning the sale and consumption of bats, a regional delicacy but an animal believed to be a vector for the virus. The British Foreign Office said on its website on Wednesday there were reports of suspected cases in Gambia. But Gambia's director of health, promotion and education, Momadou Njai, denied there were any such infections, saying one elderly man had been tested and cleared.

n appeal hearing into the murder case of Hans Williams and Madea Paykue has hit a storming block as the state accused the Defense Counsel of failing to acquaint them with an amended versions of its legal memorandum for counter argument. In legal proceedings either of the two parties the appelle or respondent should serve a copy of their legal argument to the party to enable counter argument but this was done as indicated by the state represented by former Solicitor General M. Wilkins Wright. But Frank Musa Dean the legal counsel for the appelle differed and stated that the state received their brief and he has document to that effect. The objection raised by the state prompted Chief Justice Francis Korkpor to adjourn the hearing to afford the state get the defense counsels amended legal memorandum indicating that the court could not continue with the hearing when such grave objection has been raised. This court is a neutral party with no interest in any party, our decision here is based strictly on the law, this is a high profile case and every legal means will be adhered to stated Chief Justice Korkpor. He stated that cases on most

JUSTICE BANKS BACKS OFF

Hurdle in murder trial, Supreme Court Suspends Hearing

served as a Justice Minister based on that I have decided to rescue myself from this hearing said Banks and he immediately left his seat and walked out of the court with Chief Justice Francis Kporkor and the other three justices taking charge. The decision by Associate Justice Banks comes from the backdrop that he served as Justice Minister when the two convicted defendants were arrested, charged, tried and convicted by the lower court on March 9, 2009. Move by Associate Justice Banks to rescue himself from the case on what appears to be avoiding prejudice was highly welcomed by the families of the two convicted defendants who were also present at the chamber of the high court for the hearing. Convicts family welcomes Banks absence Barsee Williams the younger brother of Hans Williams told FrontPageAfrica shortly after the hearing was adjourned that the decision for Banks to quit the hearing was the most honest thing he had done for himself because his family was already on the verge to raise objection through their legal counsel if he has chosen to play blind eyes on the law and remain on the bench for the hearing. Associate Justice Banks really needed to rescue himself from this hearing because he was the one who wrote this fictitious report that landed by brother and his fiancee in trouble today, actually they are innocent said Barsee Williams He disclosed that because of the long delay by the Supreme Court to hear the appeal application made by the legal counsel of his brother and fiance, his family had filed a formal complaint to the ECOWAS Court indicating that the rights of the convicts have been violated because the Supreme Court had failed over the period of four years after their conviction by the lower court to hear their appeal application. However the Supreme Court had frowned on report that the legal counsel of the appelle Hans and Madea has filed a formal complaint to the ECOWAS Court while the case is pending before the high court. When questioned by Chief Justice Francis Korkpor whether he was aware of any compliant filed to ECOWAS Court by the defense counsel the, lead defense lawyer Cllr. Frank Musa Dean replied in the negative adding not to my knowledge. Murder convicts Hans Williams and his fiance Madea Paykue were sentenced to death by hanging after a lower court ruling on March 9, 2009 when a 12-member jury found them guilty of murder after they were charged for murder in the after math of the death of 13year old Angel Togbah at their Sinkor home on November 30, 2007. The ruling of the lower court was rejected by the counsels of the defendants and announced an appeal to the Supreme Court a matter now before the high court for final determination. Justice Banks absence from the Supreme Court hearing on the case could create a hurdle in the high court reaching a decision. It is now left with three Associate justices and the Chief to deicide the hearing. During hearings by the Supreme Court it is normally a practice for four associate justices and the chief justice to bring down an opinion. With the absence of one Associate Justice, the high curt now has an even number to take a decision. It therefore means, there is no one to break a tie on the decision to be made in the case of two against and two infavor.

instances are delayed at the Supreme Court because the proper legal steps are not followed by parties and as a result the people who dont understand the legal formalities complain of justice being delayed. Chief Justice Korkpor announced that the case will be re-assigned though he did not mention a specific date but re-affirmed the Supreme

Courts decision that the appeal application of the convicts will be heard and an opinion will be rendered by the high court. iberias Minister of Gender and development has described as a major challenge act by blind people to use children as aid during their street begging and called on local and International nongovernmental organizations to help government in the fight against such practice. Speaking at the end of two days stakeholders conference held in the conference room of the Gender Ministry in Monrovia, Deputy Gender Minister Andrew Tehmeh said, the government of Liberia is making frantic efforts in collaborating with civil society organizations to prevent the use of children by blind street beggars aid during street begging. He also called on parents to stop allowing their children to be sued by blind beggars who denied them the opportunity to attend school. Tehmeh said: Every day a child misses school because he or she has to carry a blind man or woman around to beg is not healthy for our country. These children are the future of this country and they deserve the right to be in school and not to be used as beggar aid. Meanwhile, delegates at a two day second annual conference of the Child Protection Network of Liberia have drafted a resolution aimed at protecting children rights. Amongst several things the delegates agreed that; members of the Liberian Child Protection Network, haven effectively evaluated key elements that make up a standardized child protection network emulating from the annual national conference on strengthening the formal child

LIBERTY PARTY CALLS FOR CLOSURE OF LIBERIAN BORDER WITH GUINEA IN WAKE OF EBOLA OUTBREAK

Monrovia-

pposition Liberty Party (LP) has called on the Liberian government to close the countrys border with neighboring Guinea in wake of the deadly disease Ebola that has led to the death of about 70 persons and penetrated into Liberia. The party made the call on Wednesday in a press release issued in Monrovia after a unanimous decision taken by the party hierarchy at an executive committee meeting. Following extensive deliberation by the National Executive Committee of Liberty Party at its regular Tuesday meeting, the party has reasoned that it will be in the best interest of Liberia to have its borders with the Republic of Guinea closed in the wake of an outbreak of the deadly Ebola virus in that country which has now entered Liberia, stated the party. The party stated that if the borders are closed, it would send a clear signal to Liberians, in particular, that the country is faced with a severe health situation that requires stringent measures to protect the peoples lives. Liberty Party believes that leaving the borders opened to unrestricted human traffic in the wake of the life-threatening virus could be interpreted as a demonstration of insensitivity, stated the LP release. Border will remain open Despit repeated call for the government to close the countrys border with Guinea; the government through the ministry of health has insisted that the border will remain open. WHO does not permit for us to close the country, the international health regulations are made by the countries, by the Minister that meet in Geneva every year, they are the ones that put the law and say dont close the country when you have a situation like this; but we put people in a special place and prevent them from leaving from there so that they do not contaminate other people, said Dr. Walter Gwenigale, minister of health. But the Liberty Party in its statement noted that it is aware that closing of the border with Guinea comes with corresponding consequences, including economic social and political; however, it believes that nothing is more of an imperative now than securing the health of the Liberian people. The party stated that in recognition of the porous nature of the borders, it further recommends that units of the Armed Forces of Liberia be positioned at strategic points to straightly ensure that there are no movement back and forth until at such time reasonable measures have been taken to contain the pandemic. TRANSMISSION RISK REMAINS VERY LOW-US In wake of all these happenings, The United States Embassy in Monrovia revealed that the Risk of transmission of the Ebola virus remains very low as the deadly disease is contracted through contact with blood and body fluids or contaminated articles. Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to Ebola virus, though 8-10 days is most common, stated a U.S Embassy release advising its citizens living in Liberia on measures to take in safeguarding against the disease. We strongly recommend that U.S. citizens, especially those traveling to or residing in the forest region in South Central Guinea or Liberias northern border region enroll in the Department of States Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) at www.Travel. State.Gov. The Embassy stated that STEP enrollment gives U.S citizens the latest security updates, and makes it easier for the U.S. embassy or nearest U.S. consulate to contact them in an emergency. If you dont have Internet access, enroll directly with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, he said.

Monrovia: Besides, market women who are dealing in the bush meat business, other age groups in Liberia are also arguing that preventing the deadly Ebola virus is a difficult task in a country where people are so friendly and come in contacts easily. Even a few citizens who are wearing gloves as a preventive method are been criticized by others who feel it is funny to wear gloves when you have to offer handshake to others almost every minute. Victor Dumu, a youth burst into laughter when his friend James Gaye wearing gloves offered him a handshake. Dumu says he does not believe the news about Ebola is real and said he will only know it is serious when the United States Embassy in Monrovia is closed. So my man, are you trying to say I have Ebola, that you are now wearing gloves to speak to me? Do you think this Ebola is a serious issue, because if it was so serious, Uncle Sam would not still be here? The only way I will know that Ebola is serious, is when Uncle Sam closes the US embassy and air lift all of her citizens as they did during the war, but as long as they are still here, I am not worry, Says Victor Dumu of United Methodist University. James, who sells cell phone on Broad Street, interrupted the conversation and said the virus is very hard to control in Liberia. This Ebola is hard to control in a country like Liberia because we that do not have car have to ride passenger vehicles like buses and taxis. It would be difficult not to rub against a person who is sweating and has the virus, because we are always squeezed up together. Pointing out another fact, James who is a lover of soccer and a fan of Spanish club Barcelona said people sit in congested video clubs to watch football and could easily contact Ebola. For example, when major teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester United are playing the various video clubs are always jam parked that we take off our shirts because of the heat and sweat, and everybody is rubbing on one another while cheering for his or her team. So how can one avoid an Ebola patient when everybody is sweating and touching one another? He further said he prefers HIV/ AIDS to Ebola in that HIV/ AIDS allows a person to live for several years, while Ebola only allows a person to live for days. On the other hand, some rural women visiting Monrovia said if they leave Monrovia and return to rural Liberia, it would be hard not to greet their elders according to tradition. If the Town chief breaks kola nut with his hand and gives it to me, will I refuse it because of Ebola? So this thing you people are talking about not shaking

people hand is hard, because if I go back to my home town in Kolahun and refused to shake my old people hand, they will say I am insulting them and taking myself big. And it is a big crime in our tradition to do so, Says Ma, Kaymah. Health Minister Dr. Walter Gwenigale Monday confirmed that two out of five tests sent to France for examination has confirmed that the deadly Ebola virus is in territorial limits of Liberia. "The lady who died from Foya was a result of Ebola and the woman taking care of her is still alive. However, she left Foya to come down to Firestone to her husband. We have searched and found her and has already instructed Dr. Mabande, the Medical Administrator at the Firestone Hospital to isolate her from people." Says Dr. Gwenigale:

Dr. Gwenigale explained that health authorities have also found the husband of the lady and that the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta, USA has been notified. The confirmation comes as Liberia struggles in dealing with the anxiety associated with the reported outbreak of the deadly Ebola Virus in Guinea and its subsequent spreading to Liberia with over eight cases reported by health authorities, which by the end of last week had vanished. According to IBT news organ, the two suspected cases of Ebola in Liberia have been confirmed and one of the patients has succumbed to the lethal disease. One of them was married to a Guinean who is dead while her sister is quarantined in a medical centre, according to Al Jazeera. Among several suspected patients tested for Ebola, only two were tested positive in Liberia as yet.

"There have been 2 deaths among the suspected cases; a 35 year old woman who died on 21 March tested positive for Ebola virus while a male patient who died on 27 March tested negative," WHO said in a statement on its website. At least 80 people out of 111 have died who tested positive for Ebola in neighboring Guinea, which was the epic centre of virus outbreak. Ebola virus has an incubation period of two to 21 days and may cause death within a few days. Its symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, high fever and bleeding. The western African nations of Guinea, Sierra Leone and Liberia are struggling to contain the disease from reaching epidemic proportions. In an effort to clamp down potential transit points for the virus, weekly markets near the busy borders in Senegal have been closed where produce from Guinea is sold, Reuters reported. Flights to Guinea's capital Conakry are also being monitored and passengers checked for the virus. A regional airline, Gambia Bird, has suspended its scheduled launch to Guinea as a precautionary measure. WHO says it is the first time in twenty years for Ebola to cross International Border. And has not recommended any trade or travel restrictions on the western African countries yet, based on available information on contagious threat posed by the disease. The Ebola virus is transmitted via direct contact with blood, body fluids, and unprotected handling of patients or corpses. It can even spread from wild animals to humans.

Buutuo Nimba Countyiberias 15-year brutal civil conflict left many scars on the lives of people, something that has resulted into stigmatization of individuals from certain localities for one reason or the other. All Liberians who can recall the trends of event during the war would remember the Town of Buutuo in Nimba County. The Town, famous for being the first Town that witnessed the invasion of rebel forces led by former warlord turned President Charles Taylor from neighboring Cote divoire into Liberia, still lies in ruins as citizens live under difficult conditions. Madam Neewon Zekpeh is sixty years old and has lived all her life in this town; she tells FrontPage Africa that she is engaged in farming for living. Zekpah said growing up as a young girl in Buutuo Town before the crisis was wonderful. She said the inhabitants lived in peace with others from across the Cestos River that divides Liberia from Ivory Coast; but adds that now going across the other side of the river is difficult as though it requires a lot of security bureaucracy. The sixty-year-old told FPA that she has three children who left the town to come to live in Monrovia seeking greener pastures. She expressed hope that they could become successful and live a better life. In spite of their current condition, it appears all hope is not lost for people of that area as the United States Ambassador to Liberia Madam Deborah Malac made a historic visit to that historic, but controversial town. The US ambassadors visit is the first in more than three decades for an American diplomat. At a colorful program held in Buutuo to commemorate the US diplomats visit to the remote town, the citizens of the area expressed gratitude for the first visit of an eminent official of the US government in more than three decades. The citizens in a petition statement presented to Ambassador Malac said: Madam Ambassador the 14 years civil war in Liberia passed through here and left us as victims of circumstances and the lack of many basic social services. The citizens continued: It has often been said by some Liberians that we citizens of this area are rebels fighters; something we frown on to the strongest term and describe it as erroneous, baseless and lack iota of truth but one that only intended to deny us the opportunity to connect with other parts of the other country. The Buutuo citizens in their petition also made several requests, which include the provision of Education facilities for children of that area, that the US government through its ambassador assists them with the needed materials for agriculture purposes, the provision of MicroFinance loans, and infrastructure and youth empowerment through skills training. In response to the citizens petition US Ambassador Malac was careful not to commit the US government, but promised to sell the request with other friendly governments and the National government hoping that it could lead to a possible intervention. Malac Said: Having the opportunity to represent my country in a country like Liberia is a real dream come true for me, one that I never expected. For his part Representative Samuel Kogar (NUDP-District#5 Nimba County) said, the visit of the US ambassador to that part of the country signifies that there is a flow of normal security activities at the Liberian Ivory Coast border. He said, the visit of the Ambassador Malac would also give room for potential investment in that part of the country, as security is guaranteed for any potential investor. Rep. Kogar whose invitation resulted into the visit of the US ambassador to that part of the country, expressed gratitude to the US government for allowing its ambassador to visit one the countrys furthest towns. Ambassador Malac as per tradition was welcomed with Kola nuts and traditionally gowned and given the name Manla which means we are safe in the Gio dialect.

SOUTH SUDAN ON VERGE OF AFRICA'S WORST FAMINE SINCE 1980S: UN

IN BRIEF

Geneva (AFP) ar-torn South Sudan could become the scene of the worst famine catastrophe in Africa in decades without more aid and a ceasefire to let farmers reach their fields, the UN warned Thursday. "If we miss the planting season, there will be a catastrophic decline in food security," Toby Lanzer, the UN's top aid official in the country, told reporters in Geneva. "What will strike that country, and it will hit about seven million people, will be more grave than anything that continent has seen since the mid-1980s," he warned, referring to the massive famine in Ethiopia that shocked the world's conscience. South Sudanese farmers usually plant their fields in April and May, but they have been unable to start this year amid a raging civil war.

RISKS OF VIOLENCE AND FRAUD HAUNT LANDMARK AFGHAN ELECTION

KABUL (Reuters) ven if the Taliban fail to hobble the Afghan presidential election on Saturday, it could take months for a winner to be declared at a time when the country desperately needs a leader to stem rising violence as foreign troops prepare to leave. Most people expect the election will be better run than the chaotic 2009 vote that handed President Hamid Karzai a second term amid massive fraud and ballot stuffing. And, despite a crescendo of attacks by the Islamist militant Taliban group in recent weeks, millions of Afghans are eager for a say in their country's future.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) alaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak says a new analysis of satellite data shows that the missing Malaysia Airlines plane plunged into the southern Indian Ocean. If confirmed, the news would be a major breakthrough in the unprecedented two-week struggle to find out what happened to Flight 370, which disappeared shortly after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing with 239 passengers and crew aboard. A police investigation may never determine the reason why the Malaysia Airlines jetliner disappeared, and search planes scouring the Indian Ocean for any sign of its wreckage aren't certain to find anything either, officials said Wednesday. The assessment by Malaysian and Australian officials underscored the lack of knowledge authorities have about what happened on Flight 370. It also points to a scenario that becomes more likely with every passing day that the fate of the Boeing 777 and the 239 people on board might remain a mystery forever. The plane disappeared March 8 on a flight to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur after its transponders, which make the plane visible to commercial radar, were shut off. Military radar picked up the jet just under an hour later, on the other side of the Malay Peninsula. Authorities say that until then its "movements were consistent with deliberate action by someone on the plane," but have not ruled out anything, including mechanical error. Police are investigating the pilots and crew for any evidence suggesting they may have hijacked or sabotaged the plane. The backgrounds of the passengers, two-thirds of whom were Chinese, have been checked by local and international investigators and nothing suspicious has been found.

"Investigations may go on and on and on. We have to clear every little thing," Inspector General Khalid Abu Bakar told reporters. "At the end of the investigations, we may not even know the real cause. We may not even know the reason for this incident." Police are also investigating the cargo and the food served on the plane to eliminate possible poisoning of passengers and crew, he said. The search for the plane began over the Gulf of Thailand and South China Sea, where the plane's last communications were, and then shifted west to the Strait of Malacca, where it was last spotted by military radar. Experts then analyzed hourly satellite "handshakes" between the plane and a satellite and now believe it crashed somewhere in the southern Indian Ocean. A search there began just over two weeks ago, and now involves at least nine ships and nine planes.

MALAYSIAN FLIGHT SAGA Authorities say Jet mystery may never be solved
Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak was scheduled to visit Thursday morning the Australian air force base near the west coast city of Perth to inspect the multinational search effort. Razak flew into Perth from Kuala Lumpur around midnight local time in a visit that reinforces the reality that while Australia is coordinating the ocean search, the investigation into the tragedy ultimately remains Malaysia's responsibility. Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott will accompany his Malaysian counterpart during the air base visit, the Australian leader's office said in a statement on Thursday. The British government said a nuclear-powered submarine with advanced underwater search capability had arrived in the southern Indian Ocean. The current search area is a 221,000-square kilometer (85,000-square mile) patch of sea roughly a 2-hour flight from Perth. Angus Houston, the head of a joint agency coordinating the multinational search effort out of Australia, said no time frame had been set for the search to end, but that a new approach would be needed if nothing showed up. "Over time, if we don't find anything on the surface, we're going to have to think about what we do next, because clearly it's vitally important for the families, it's vitally important for the governments involved that we find this airplane," he told Australian Broadcasting Corp. radio. Flight Lieutenant Dave O'Brien, captain of an Australian P-3 Orion that arrived back after dark Wednesday at base Pearce near Perth, said it was another fruitless day of searching despite favorable weather and sea conditions. "We didn't see anything at all of interest," he said. "So a fairly quiet day for us out there. However, we are back out tomorrow to try it all again." With no other data available indicating where the plane went

them "bear the responsibility" for all the country's troubles. "Face with these repeated accusations, Chad... is deciding to withdraw the Chadian contingent from the MISCA (African force)," the government statement said. It said the practical steps of the withdrawal will be tackled in "common agreement" between Chad and the African Union. "In the meantime Chad will assume without fail its peace mission in the zones it is responsible for in the CAR," according to the statement that did not give details about the areas. The government said it has informed the president of the Central African Republic, the African Union and the UN Secretary General of its decision. Chadian soldiers have been accused of siding with the mainly Muslim Seleka movement -- which held power from March 2013 until January this year -- and of showing passivity toward abuses some

down, spotting wreckage is key to narrowing down the search area and ultimately finding the plane's flight data recorders, which would provide a wealth of information about the condition the plane was flying under and the communications or sounds in the cockpit. The data recorders emit a "ping" that can be detected by special equipment towed by a ship in the immediate vicinity. But the battery-powered recorders stop transmitting the pings about 30 days after a crash. Locating the data recorders and wreckage after that is possible, but it becomes an even more daunting task. Malaysia has been criticized by the relatives of some Chinese passengers on board, who accuse it of not providing enough information or even lying about what it knows about the final movements of the plane. In the early days of the crisis, the Chinese government itself expressed irritation at the speed of the probe and the lack of information.

IRAN'S PICK FOR UN ENVOY HAS TIES TO '79 HOSTAGE-TAKING. WHAT SHOULD US DO?

he United States has a veto in the United Nations Security Council by virtue of being one of the councils five permanent members granted that power by the institutions charter. But should the US be able to veto a countrys selection of its ambassador to the UN in New York simply because UN headquarters is located on American soil? Traditionally the US has recognized that it has no right to intervene in a countrys choice of a UN ambassador but that stance is being tested with the news that Iran intends to send a diplomat who was involved in the 1979 hostagetaking at the American Embassy in Tehran as its representative in New York. Incensed members of Congress from both sides of the aisle are calling on the Obama administration to deny the Iranian, Hamid Abutalebi, both a visa to enter the US and the diplomatic immunity to which an ambassador would be entitled.

N'Djamena (AFP) had announced Thursday it was withdrawing from the African peacekeeping force in Central African Republic after being accused of siding with a mainly Muslim movement that seized power last year. Chad came under the spotlight at the weekend when at least

24 people were killed and another 100 seriously wounded by Chadian soldiers sent to repatriate their compatriots from the CAR, according to officials there. The government in N'Djamena said it was withdrawing from the MISCA force as it denounced "a wanton and malicious campaign" against its troops, one that it said made

of them carried out against the population. Chad has always denied the charges. CAR's interim president Catherine Samba Panza announced Tuesday the opening of an investigation into the killing of the 24 people by Chadian soldiers. It was the worst-known incident involving foreign troops since French and African peacekeepers deployed in CAR late last year. A MISCA officer said on Sunday that the soldiers had fired after they were attacked, but locals and members of the

local "anti-balaka" militia said the soldiers had deliberately fired on the crowd. In the past year, the country -- one of the poorest in the world -- has been racked by Muslim-Christian fighting that has claimed thousands of lives and left hundreds of thousands of people displaced. In the last few weeks, the mainly Christian anti-balaka militias have been accused of spearheading violence against Muslim communities. The militias were formed last year in response to a coup in March 2013 by the Seleka rebel group.

qualifier at the ATS on Sunday

Washington (AFP) he Washington Wizards are headed to the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2008, punching their post-season ticket with a 118-92 win over Boston. Marcin Gortat on Wednesday scored 22 points, pulled down eight rebounds and handed out four assists for the Wizards, who got 19 points from Bradley Beal on 7-of-8 shooting from the field. Trevor Ariza chipped in 18 points and seven rebounds for the Wizards and John Wall added 13 points and 10 assists. Boston reserve Jared Sullinger scored a game-high 25 points, but the Celtics suffered their 11th defeat in 12 games.

iberia will take on Gambia in the first round first leg of the 2015 African under-20 qualifiers at the Antoinette Tubman Stadium (ATS) on Sunday. But the hosts, as if they were compelled to enter the competition, have been forced to once again undergo an eleventh-hour preparation. Head coach Kaetu Smith, whose lads have been training for at least three days at the ATS, set-up a cracked program to make-up for the wasted time. And Smith, who was in charge of the national team from May 2011 to December 2012, isnt expecting much from the squad given the time factor. In order for every countrys national football squad to produce the necessary result for her country, it is very important for the team to be given all of the necessary support to begin early preparation both in and out of the field. But such support was not provided for the team at the given time until a week to the game which is a major setback for the country and people, he said. Smith said the teams late preparation for the competition was caused by the lack of money from the Liberia Football Association (LFA). He told FrontPageAfrica that they started their training under a week ago while Gambia started their training about six months ago. Smith conceded that a late preparation for any competition is always a serious setback for the players and coaches, which he revealed, is now business as usual in Liberia. He pointed out that, under such difficult condition, it will always be impossible for a team to deliver the necessary result for its people. Smith said the LFA was warned about late training when he oversaw a failed 2013 Africa Cup of Nations and 2014 Fifa World Cup qualifiers. This late preparation that we are presently carrying

on is going to be a disadvantage for the players because they will have to take the race of over training. And during the time for the game, they all will be tired and will not be able to produce the necessary result you need from them, he added. Twenty-five players, drawn from first and second division clubs, are expected to compete against Gambia with a robust youth programs that started in 2000. Gambia won their first African under-17 championship in 2005 at home and in 2009, representing the continent at the Fifa jamboree in Peru and Nigeria respectively. Under the tutelage of Ghanas Fred Osam-Doudu in 2005, the Babe Scorpions shocked Brazil 3-1 on September 17 before speeding past Qatar 3-1 on September 20 but were beaten by the Netherlands 2-0 on September 23 to finish third in group D behind Brazil and Netherlands on six points respectively due to an inferior goal difference. Under the guidance of Tariq Saigy in 2009, Gambia finished bottom of group C having lost 0-2 to Iran on October 25 and 2-1 to the Netherlands on October 28 before being held to a 2-2 draw by Colombia on October 31 respectively. In the 2007 African under-20 championship, Gambia lost 0-1 to Nigeria in the semi-finals but beat 3-1 in the third-place play-off. Representing the continent as one of four teams in the 2007 Fifa under-20 World Cup, Gambia finished second in group C to Mexico before losing to Austria 1-2 in the knock-out. Thats just a flash in the pan of their enviable history in these competitions ahead of the arrival of 20 players and 10. And the Gambia Football Federation (GFF) will be hoping their youthful lads can pick-up the maximum points that will render the return leg

practically meaningless two weeks later in Banjul. Gambias preparations were hit with the late withdrawals of Sulayman Marreh, Kekuta Manneh and Hamza Barray but head coach Tapha Manneh can rely on Italy-based Ali Sowe of Serie A side Chievo Verona, who is on loan to Serie Bs Stabia. The ATS or Samuel Kanyon Doe sports complex have not been the fortress it used to be and a rare win or draw will boost the teams morale ahead of the return leg. Liberia last beat Sierra Leone (3-1 on penalties) after a 2-2 aggregate in December 2010 and have drawn 0-0 with Ivory Coast on April 20, 2011 (in the London Olympic Games qualifiers) and 1-1 with Nigeria on April 15, 2011 in the All-Africa Games preliminaries. Senegal were held to a 1-1 draw by Liberia in the under-17 first leg first round qualifier on April 9, 2010 in Monrovia before losing the return leg 1-0 on April 23 in Dakar. Players: Bubacarr Sanyang, Musa Touray, Bubacarr Sanneh, Mass Manga, Sang Pierre Mendy, Alieu Jatta, Saikou Conteh, Bakary Njie, Ebrima Tunkara, Bubacarr Trawally, Lamin Jallow, Madi Fatty, Ebou Kanteh, Bully Drammeh, Ali Sowe, Saloum Faal, Bakary Daffeh, Ebou Sanyang, Yusupha Bobb and Abdoulie Bah. BARCELONA TO APPEAL FIFA TRANSFER BAN

Madrid (AFP) arcelona are to appeal a one-year ban on signing players imposed by FIFA for a "serious" breach of rules in the signing under-age players, the club announced. The sanction is related to the signing of 10 players under the age of 18 between 2009 and 2013 with football's governing body also finding the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) guilty of improper practice.

Madrid (AFP) eal Madrid eased towards a fourth consecutive Champions League semi-final as Cristiano Ronaldo equalled another goalscoring record in their 3-0 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Santiago Bernabeu on Wednesday. Looking to avenge their semifinal defeat at the hands of the Germans last season, Madrid flew out of the traps and were ahead within three minutes when Gareth Bale poked home from Dani Carvajal's pass.

any westerners who visit Africa admire certain traditions especially the Traditional attire. Liberia is one of those countries in Africa with such beautiful tradition especially the attire, many including peace corps try to copy the Traditional style of dress code of the typical Liberian woman who wear lappa made from strolls before the introduction of western clothing. In this picture is a clear example of many of the westerners who admire the Traditional clothing made by Traditional women in Liberia. Madam Deborah Malac United states Ambassador accredited to Liberia was traditionally dressed by

women of the Buu-Yao clan in Nimba County during the week when she visited that isolated part of Liberia famous for being the first town that witnessed the Rebel invasion led by Charles Taylor and Prince Johnson. As per their Tradition, women usually make traditional clothing to present important guest. As seen in this picture the women gathered their resources and time to sew these traditional cloths for the US ambassador during her visit which demonstrates how pleased they were for her visit. Been so overwhelmed by the gesture from the local women she expressed to them how grateful she was for the gifts and described them as hospitable people.
