Textbook: Applied Simulation Flexsim with Software Beaverstock, Greenwood, Lavery, and Nordgren Flexsim Software Products, Inc. 3rd Edition 2012, ISBN-13: 9780983231929 Additional Materials (Comes with Textbook): Flexsim Simulation Software, Flexsim Software Products, Inc., Version 6.0 or later, 2012 Using your learning resources is critical to your success in this course. Please purchase directly through SNHUs online bookstore, MBS Direct, rather than any other vendor. Purchasing directly from the bookstore ensures that you will obtain the correct materials and that the Help Desk, your advisor, and the instructor can provide you with support if you have problems. Course Prerequisite: IT 501 and IT 510, or permission of instructor. Course Description: This course focuses on the theory and practice of discrete system simulation. Topics include simulation/modeling techniques and methodologies illustrated by businesses and industrial applications such as computer and network modeling, manufacturing simulation and queuing systems. Queuing theory and input/output statistical analysis are included. Modeling software is used.

Course Objectives: Identify the place of computer simulation and modeling principles, techniques, and software using appropriate terms for the computer analyst Identify problems that are candidates for discrete-event computer simulation modeling solutions Evaluate the efficacy of problem statement, expected results, and modeling/analysis issues Apply the simulation modeling and analysis (SMA) project lifecycle, and apply SMA principles to a problem situation using simulation software Identify, create, manage, and evaluate data-driven models Identify and interpret best-fit data distributions and use to drive simulation models Create, implement, and evaluate base and what-if alternative models Describe and implement experimental design parameters with multiple replications Assess the possibilities for simulations applied to business process re-engineering Evaluate where and when serious games and virtual worlds can be useful simulations

Assignment Descriptions: Short papers are due the week after they are assigned unless specified otherwise. The papers are to be printed out and handed to the instructor, unless through prior arrangement. Class assignments are to be copied on the instructors flash drive at the end of the allotted time. For class assignments, the student may only use the Flexsim book and Flexsim help files for reference. WiFi or any Internet has to be disabled on the students computer. The team project requires all team members contribute. Team project milestones as assigned for each team are due on the dates specified in this syllabus.

Late homework assignments are not tolerated unless through prior arrangement or a serious emergency. Late assignments will be accepted at the instructors discretion. Missed class assignments will be given a grade of 0 unless a valid excuse is given for missing class, in which case the student will make up by taking a different assignment. Note that late assignments and make-up tests will require written proof of the student not being able to attend class or devote time to the assignment. Accepting the proof is at the instructors discretion.

Course Grading Policies: For grading percentages, please refer to the table below. Note that 5% of the grade consists of evaluations from team members, however, if a student is not pulling their weight on the team, the other members are encouraged to contact the instructor as soon as possible during the semester. * Incomplete and Incomplete/Failure - Any student requesting an I grade must complete a Student Petition & Contract for a Grade of Incomplete and submit it to the proper offices prior to the final day of the term/semester. The petition will specify a deadline by which the course work must be completed. The incomplete automatically becomes an IF if work has not been completed and a grade has not been submitted by the specific deadline. Attendance / Participation Policy: Failure to participate during the first week of the course (12:00 AM Monday through 11:59 PM Sunday) will result in automatic withdrawal. Participation is defined as posting activity within a discussion board, wiki, or blog, and/or an assignment submission. Students who do not participate during the first week forfeit their rights to be reinstated into the course. Students are expected to attend face-to-face (F2F) class meeting times as well as participate online for Hybrid courses throughout the term. Students enrolled in F2F (lecture) courses should also login to their blackboard course site to check for announcements, assignment information, and links to additional resources. Students who fail to attend and participate or who fail to withdraw from the course in accordance with COCEs official drop and withdrawal policy will be graded appropriately.
