Objective: DemonstratethecapabilitiesofGeomagicStudio,specificallytheParametric Surfacingmodule.Createahighqualitysurfaceonascanofaconnectingrod forging. Approximately15minutes. forgingpolygons.wrp

Thisisscandataofa forgingforaconnecting rod.

NavigatetotheParametricSurfacestabandclick ontheParametricSurfacingStarticon. Onthepopupwindowthatappears,clickOK. Next,regiondetectionis runtosegmentthemodel intodifferentregions basedoncurvature. ClickonDetectRegions. easilyfixedbysampling draggingthecurvenode points. Noticethecolorsofthe regions.Thesecolorsare indicativeofthe automationregion classification.For example,planesarelight green,cylindersare yellow,etc.

PressCTRL+Atoselect/highlightallofthe regions.

NotHighlighted Highlighted Thesoftwarewillattempt toclassifythesurfacetype basedonthe contourlinedregionand theunderlyingpolygonal mesh.

ClickonClassifyRegions>AutoClassify.Press CTRL+Ctocleartheselection.

HolddownSHIFTandselecttheregionsinthe picturebelowwithyourpaintbrush.Goto ClassifyRegions>DraftedExtrusiontoclassify themassuch.

Clickontheregioninthefollowingpictureand classifyitasanExtrusion.

Oncethesurfacesare PressCTRL+Atoselectalloftheregionsandclick classified,itistimeto beginfittingthesurfaces. onFitSurfaces.ClickApply. Bluesurfacesindicatethat Youmayrunintoaproblemlikebelow. thesurfacefitwell, ClickOK.ClickOKtothewarningmessagethat orangesurfacesare appears. warnings,andredare errors.

TheseproblemscanbefixedwithRepair Surfaces.Clickontheicontoaccessthe command. Theproblemsappearinthedialoglist.Clickon theprobleminthelist(inthiscase,HighInternal Deviation)andclickonWhatsWrong.Apopup windowappearsdescribingtheproblemand possiblewaystofixit.Forthisexample,wewill useEditProfiletofixtheproblem.ClickOKon thewindowandthenclickonFix. ExpandEditProfile.Thereasonthesurfaceis failingisbecausetherearenotenough segmentationpointsontheprofiletoholdthe surfacedown.Clickonthecurvelikeinthe followingpicturetoaddafewsegmentation points. RepairSurfacesidentifies problemsinfittedsurfaces andprovidesrepairtips andtools.

ClickonUpdate.Thelineshouldturnyellow (meaningvalid).ClickAcceptandthenDone.The Nowalltheprimary softwarewillreturntotheRepairSurfaces surfaceshavebeen screenandthesurfacehasbeenrepaired(i.e. successfullycreated. thesurfaceisnowblue).ClickOKtoexit.

RepairedSurface Nowthattheprimaryregionsarettedwithsurfaces,thisistheidealtimetouse ParametricExchangeforthetransferofsurfacesdirectlytooneofthefivemajorCAD packages(Inventor,SolidWorks,CATIA,SiemensNX,orPro/Engineer).Thebeautyof ParametricExchangeistherealtime,parametrictransferofsurfacestoaCADpackage withoutthenecessitytonishthestepsinthisGuide!DownloadtheParametric

UseClassifyConnectionstoclassifythe Yellow=Freeform connectingsurfacesthatarebetweenthe Blue=ConstantRadius primaryregionssothatitlookslikethefollowing Orange=Sharp picture.

ClickonFitConnections.ClickonApplytofitthe connectingsurfaces.ClickOK.

FittedSurfacesandConnections Finally,thesurfacesare trimmedandstitchedto createtheresultant model.Noticethatseveral optionsexisttooutput data.Besidesthetrimmed andstitchedmodel,you canalsooutput untrimmedprimaries,and theprofilecurveswhich drivecreationofswept surfaces.Theseareall exportableasIGES.

ClickonTrimandStitch.SelecttheStitched ObjectradiobuttonandclickApply.
