VoIP SOLUTION FOR NBM COMMUNIUCATION SYSTEMS

OVERVIEW

Communication via packet and data networks such as IP, VSAT, ATM, Frame Relay has
become a preferred strategy for both corporate and public networks. Experts predict
that data traffic will soon exceed telephone traffic if it already hasn’t. As a result of
this there has been considerable interest in transmitting voice over data networks, as
opposed to the more traditional data over voice networks. This process is called
"Voice over IP".

Furthermore, as the volume of data (IP) traffic continues to increase sharply due to
the prevalence of the Internet and intranets, communication systems are shifting
to an IP-network-based configuration.

Using the Voice over Internet protocol (VoIP), which integrates voice and data
networks, is a key approach to such systems for both wide area networks (WANs) and
local area networks (LANs).

INTRODUCTION

Communication systems are indispensable tools for enterprises to support their

activities. Improving business efficiency and reducing expenses are two undertakings
needed to expand business, and both are strongly needed for enterprise
communication systems.
Communication expenses can be reduced by integrating voice and data, and total
running costs (including maintenance and operation) can be minimized. Also, there is
a strong need for a system with enough flexibility to keep pace with new
communication services because enterprises must lower their investment risks and
avoiding systems becoming quickly obsolete.

In this proposal we give an overview of integrating voice and data by using VoIP
technologies and describe Palette Limited’s solutions for IP based enterprise
communications for both Local Area Network (LAN) and Wide Area Network (WAN).

Advantages and Benefits of Voice over IP

One of the main reasons and probably the most significant interest in the race to
send voice over IP is the cost advantage that this process offers organizations due to
the flat rate, low cost of Internet traffic. Generally the benefits of technology can be
divided into three categories:

• Cost reduction. Enterprise communication systems need two key

improvements: reduction of communication expenses for instance reduction of
inter-branch calls are greatly reduced, and minimization of total systems
running costs, including operation and maintenance costs. Considering the
high trunk telephone tariffs in the country, the adoption of VoIP makes perfect
sense in the Nigerian context.
• Simplification. An integrated infrastructure that supports all forms of
communication allows more standardization and reduces the total equipment
complement. The economies of putting all forms of traffic over an IP based
network will pull companies in this direction, simply because IP will act as the
unifying agent regardless of the underlying architecture. This combined
infrastructure can support dynamic bandwidth optimization and a fault
tolerant design.
• Consolidation. People are the most significant cost elements in a network, so
any opportunity to combine operations and eliminate points of failure and to
consolidate accounting systems would be beneficial. In the enterprise, SNMP
based management can be provided for both voice and date services using
VoIP. Universal use of the IP protocol for all applications will reduce complexity
and provide more flexibility.

Expectations of VoIP
VoIP technology enables digitized voice data to be transmitted in the form of IP
packets. Generally, voice compression and encoding technologies are used with VoIP
technology to improve transmission efficiency.
To connect voice networks with IP networks, IP gateways are used. They support such
functions as
(1) compressing and encoding/decoding voice signals from terminals like PBXs,
(2) packetizing/de-packetizing compressed/encoded data, and
(3) converting call-processing information like call-origination requests from PBXs to
make them usable by VoIP. The VoIP process is illustrated in Fig. 1.
Many factors degrade voice quality, including delay, swing, and packet discarding,
because an IP
network is a best-efforts one.
To ensure voice quality,
(1) delay must be managed to maintain real-time voice transmission,
(2) echoes caused by transmission delay must be cancelled,
(3) jitter due to swings in the arrival times of packets must be absorbed, and (4)
voice levels
between terminals must be adjusted.
To support this real-time communication and guarantee communication quality,
the standardization and development of priority controls and bandwidth guarantees
for IP packets has been progressing.

These activities have enabled the integration of voice and data networks by using
VoIP.
How does it work?
Many years ago it was discovered that sending a signal to a remote destination could
be done in a digital fashion: before sending it we have to digitalize it with an ADC
(analog to digital converter), transmit it, and at the end transform it again in analog
format with DAC (digital to analog converter) to use it.

VoIP works like that, digitalizing voice in data packets, sending them and reconverting
them in voice at destination.

Digital format can be better controlled: we can compress it, route it, convert it to a
new better format, and so on; also we saw that digital signal is more noise tolerant
than the analog one.

TCP/IP networks are made of IP packets containing a header (to control

communication) and a payload to transport data: VoIP use it to go across the network
and come to destination.

Objective

In enterprises with multiple offices, dedicated lines are often used to connect offices.
Data networks like the intranet and host computer communication networks have
been constructed independently from voice networks for inter-office extension. Figure
1 shows NBM’s existing Network infrastructure that is constructed independently
from voice network.

With this infrastructure NBM network cannot reap the benefits/advantages that VoIP
offers.
However, VoIP can be used to integrate voice networks with data networks.
Enterprises can thus reduce communication costs by eliminating redundant lines
between offices and can make use of their carriers' low-cost IP network services.

Integrating this IP gateway into your existing Network infrastructure advantage of

this solution. The IP gateway is based on PBX technology, and provides functions that
are combined with those of the PBX.

PALETTE LIMITED’S VoIP LAN SOLUTION

In this solution the IP gateway integrates into the existing PABX and Local Area
Network (LAN). Normal RJ-11 phones and fax machines can easily be connected to
the PABX and the PABX connects to the IP gateway. Figure 3 shows the integration of
the IP gateway to the existing LAN.

However , VoIP can be used to integrate voice networks with data networks. NBM can
thus reduce communication costs by eliminating redundant lines between offices
and can make use of their carrier’s low-cost IP network services.

The VoIP gateway will be integrated into your existing infrastructure as follows:

• The VoIP gateway will be connected to the Station Ports of the PBX of the
Head Office and use it to receive calls from other units of the enterprise within
a VoIP-based private telephone network
• enables the enterprise’s various geographically-dispersed units to make
telephone calls among themselves at virtually no cost
• Long Distance Calls outside the enterprise’s Virtual Private Telephone Network
are automatically placed through the VoIP gateway to call destination
telephone numbers by the international call termination service of an
international call termination gateway at extremely low rates – providing the
enterprise with significant savings in telephone communication expense

Below are the Technical Features of the VoIP gateway:

• ITU-T H.323 v3 compliance

• Audiocodes’ Voice Packetizing technology to ensure the best DSP-based voice
