The Dean Faculty of Law JamiaMilliaIslamia, New Delhi 110025 Dated:10-03-2014 Subject:Request for conducting/holding Repeat Examination for

r the students of B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) (2009-2014 Batch) who have failed in one subject in the 9th Semester Examination in the Academic Year 2013-14. It is with modesty and grace thatwe, the final year students of Faculty of Law, Jamia Millia Islamia request your consideration to the provision of the Repeat Examination for the 9th and 10th Semester ofB.A. LL.B (Hons.)Programme. Two years ago, the provision regarding repeat examinations was introduced in our programme after an application by aggrieved students of our Faculty was made to the concerned authorities. The teachers and administration at that time understood the plight and predicament of the students who were given the protection of the provision of Repeat Examination. The provision regarding compartment examinations has been given in Section 4.7 of Ordinance 15-C(XV-C). Its object wasto save a whole year of a students academic life, who fails in only one subject in their final year. It was put forth that there can be many reasons that a student may fail in one subject (e.g., absence due to severe illness). It was felt that one chance should be given and this competitive world should be made a little less dreadful for our students. In the current scenario, when a student fails in one subject in the 9th Semester, he is given an opportunity to appear only after the publication of the end term results. Now from the practice and experience of last years Repeat Examinationconducted by the Faculty it is seen that the procedure to apply, appear and ultimately receive final marks sheet of the exam is very long and goes till the month of December, which is ironically the month in whichthe exam is originally held every year. This ultimately ends up destroying their one whole year. They cannot sit for any entrance test for masters degree and also cannot give any competitive examination. Both abovementioned reasons were quoted for the promulgation of the new provision of Repeat Examination in the first place. It is sad to note that the very purpose of conducting repeat exam which was introduced with much fanfare has dissolved into nothingness. If the students are not given an opportunity to give their Repeat Exams in the same academic yearit would be detrimental to their future as they have cleared all the subjects except one subject in their 9th Semester examination. The punishment for failing in one subject is too much if they are not given one more chance to rectify their mistakes. It is the usual practice that when a student fails in any exam they have a provision to give the repeat examinationjust after declaration of the results. Likewise in our particular case, it is requested, the examination should be conducted within a reasonable time period as decided

by the administration keeping in mind the interest of the students primarily giving importance to the fact that students can be eligible to appear in various competitive examinations. The Repeat Examination, if possible, should be conducted just after the regular end semester examination (10th Semester examination). The new academic session starts from the third week of July and the results of the end term examination for the passing out batch are generally declared in the second week of July every year. The provision of Repeat Examination is the part of the same academic year in which the student fails, so it is better to conduct the examination within the same academic year. It would be just and considerate in view of the plight of the suffering students if the Repeat Examination is conducted just afterthe end semester examination. Their results could be also declared along with the results of other regular students. This practice would ultimately complete the benefit which was given to final year students 2 years ago. We have outmost faith in the just, fair and good conscience of your judgement which we would abide by in our commitment to righteousness and honour of your esteemed office.
