Course Description This course is practical, and is continuous with Dent 423. Students will apply and develop clinical skills by interacting with patients who visit the Oral Diagnosis clinic at JUST's Dental Teaching Center. Small groups of students will elicit history of chief complaint, obtain medical and dental history, perform extra and intraoral examinations, order and interpret intraoral radiographs, interpret and discuss abnormal findings, establish diagnoses and formulate treatment plans. Students should document and discuss their findings and treatment plan including referral to other disciplines with the instructor and afterwards advise patients kindly and respectfully as to their final treatment plan. Assessment Policy Weighted average for the 2 courses (40 marks clinical assessment) + 60 marks final exam at the end of the second semester Total (weighted average)= [(clinical assessment mark out of 402 (first semester) + (clinical assessment mark out of 401 (second semester)] /3 + final mark out of 60 40 marks clinical evaluation: each student is to examine at least 1 patient (out of 40), and assist in examination of at least one patient for each of the remainder of the sessions, where assessment is conducted on every session. Students are encouraged to fully examine an additional case if time remaining in the semester permits. - Student assessment out of 20 for each case is based on: 1. history taking (4/20 marks) 2. extraoral examination (2/20 marks) 3. intraoral examination (6/20 marks) 4. clinical and radiographic diagnosis (6/20 marks) 5. treatment planning (2/20 marks) 6. professionalism including punctuality, compliance with dress code, and infection control (1 mark deducted for every failure to comply with any) 60 marks at the end of the second semester: 40 marks on MCQs involving clinical cases or clinical knowledge and 20 marks on MCQs on lecture material delivered during the first semester (Dent 423, Oral Diagnosis 1). Each student is to examine at least 1 patient, and assist in examination of at least one patient per remainder of attended sessions. Students are encouraged to fully examine an additional case if time remaining in the semester permits. Students are expected to attend all clinics. Formal excuse is required in case of absence up to 20% of course.
