Readingfluencyreferstoalearner'sabilitytoreadsmoothlyandwithexpression.Goodoralreadingfluencycanbedefinedashowwell astudentdecodeswordswithoutdelayusingappropriatevoiceinflectionandarticulation. Whenchildrenarebeginningtoread,teachersleadanumberofreadingactivitiesthroughouttheschooldaythathelpdevelopfluency instudents.Herearefiveofthoseactivitiesparentscanuseathometoreinforcebeginningreadingfluency. ReadAloudtoPromoteFluency Asateacher,Ihaveencouragedparentstocontinuetoreadaloudtotheirchildrenevenaftertheyarereadingontheirown.Reading aloudnotonlyletsachildhearamoreexperiencedvoice,buthelpsdeveloplisteningcomprehension.Readingaloudallowsachildto hearcorrectintonationandnaturalrhythmsinphrasingandspeech.Readingfromavarietyofsourcesandgenresexposesachildto materialhemaybeinterestedin,yetisnotabletoreadforhimself. ChoralReadtoDevelopOralFluency Choralreadingissimplyreadingthetexttogetherwithachild,atthesametime,withtheparenttakingtheleadandsettingthepace. Parentsmaypointoutthetextastheyarereading,runningafingerunderneaththewords.Repeatedchoralreadingsoffamiliartext allowyoungchildrentogainconfidenceandpracticewithemergingskills. EchoReadtoDevelopOralFluency Echoreadingisasimpletechniquewhereaparentoradultreadsalineoftext,andasksthechildto"bemyecho",repeatingthelineof text.Itisonewayforachildwhohasbasicdecodingskillstolearntomakeadvancesinexpressionorinflection.Simplepoetry,rhyme anddialoguecanbeusedtohelpdeveloporalfluency. PartnerReadtoDevelopOralFluency Partnerorpairedreadingisanothermethodbywhichparentscanhelpchildrendeveloporalfluency.Takeapicturebookandsitnextto yourchild,alternatingpagesorsentencesonpages.Itisthe"taketurns"readingapproachtheparentreadsacoupleofsentencesof onepage,andthechildreadsthetextonthenextpage.Simplepoemscopiedforeachpartnerorevensongs,suchas"Downbythe Bay"canbeusedforpartnerreading. CheckOutAudiobookstoHelpwithFluency Audiobooks,whicharebooksontapeorCD's,alsohelpwithreadingfluency.Theuseofaudiobooksisjustonemorewayforachild tohearanappropriatevoicewithgoodinflectionandrhythm.Hearingstoriesreadonaudiobookreinforcesachildtofollowalongas someoneelsereads. Beingafluentreadercanleadtobetterwritingandvocabularyskills.Beingabletoreadwithfluencyisimportantforcomprehension andenjoyment,itisoneoftheimportantelementsinreading.
