Ilana Colon-Waters September 4, 2013 6th period Density, Sweet Density Lab write up Purpose Which candy bar

will float in water? How does this relate to density? How does the density affect the way the candy bars float in water? Hypothesis My hypothesis is that the 3 musketeers bar will float because it is made out of an airy type of cream so it doesnt have a lot of density. The snicker bar will sink because it has a lot of other things in it such as peanuts, caramel, and a cookie type crust. Materials 1. 2. 3. 4. 2 mini sized candy bars, a snickers and a 3 musketeers A triple balance beam, to get the mass A ruler, to get the length, width, and height A beaker of water, to see if it floats or not

Procedures 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. Unwrap the candy bars and put it on its own paper so they dont get mixed up. Put down some physical features of the candy bars. Weigh for the mass and measured the length width and height of the candy bars. Calculate the volume and density of each candy bar. Make a prediction of which will sink or float. Test your hypothesis by dropping the candy bars into the beaker of water.

(Make sure that you have done all the procedures for both candy bars.)

Conclusion My hypothesis was that the musketeers bar would float and the snickers bar would not float. My hypothesis stated was correct because the musketeers floated and the snickers did not float. My observations suggested that only the 3 musketeers would float because it was less dense than the snickers bar. This is because the snickers bar had a lot more extra things in it than the musketeers. Therefore I was correct in this lab. I learned that density is a big part of weight. The more dense it is the heavier it is and the less dense the lighter. I also learned affects everything including how much we weigh. This lab was connected to the real world because it is something studied for the rest of my life. If I try to build something that is supposed to fly and its too heavy how will it. If I make something that needs to heavy and its too light how will it help? That is how this lab was connected to the real world.
