CAPACITOR PROTECTION RELAY BO 01KA

2 Generally The microprocessor based capacitor protection relay BO 01KA is designed for protection of middle voltage capacitor banks connected in double wye circuit equipped with current transformer between the neutral points and for capacitor banks in H-bridge in singe-phase systems. The BO-01KA extracts from measurement unbalance current the current of fundamental frequency (50 or 60 Hz), displays its value and uses it for protection functions. The purpose of this protection relay is to detect faults of single capacitors in the capacitor bank. The unbalance protection is provided with an adjustable software compensation system for the natural unbalance of the capacitor battery The unbalance protection has two stages. The first stage is only signalling (warning), whereas the second stage is used for tripping and has current independent time delay. Inverse time characteristic can be optionally delivered too. The set value of unbalance current for signalling is lower then the value for tripping. The measured value of unbalance current is compared to the threshold value set for signalling and tripping When the secondary current of the current transformer exceeds the current sensitivity for time exceeding the time delay, the relays will trip. The current values that caused signalling or tripping are stored in non-volatile memory. This allows the user, even after the equipment has been switched off, to read out the date/time of the event and the unbalance current value. After warning or tripping, the phase angle between unbalance current and phase L1 current will be stored in non-volatile memory too. This makes possible to find out in which branch the capacitor failed.

Four LED indicators are provided on the front panel of BO-01KA: Green LED POWER indicates, that the auxiliary power supply is on. Red LED WARNING indicates, that the first stage of unbalance current is exceeded Red LED TRIP indicates, that the second stage of unbalance current is exceeded and the protection tripped Red LED ERROR indicates general fault. The ESC button is used for clearing the LED indicators and the output relays, and for returning to the start-menu. Two line 16-characters Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) on the front panel of BO-01KA has following purposes: During the normal operation it displays the true r.m.s. value of unbalance current is displayed. (main menu item Display value) After warning or tripping, the values of unbalance current can be found in submenu Report During the normal operation it is possible using the key-pad to adjust the current threshold and delay for both tripping and signalling relays and adjust other values (menu item Parameter Setting). During the normal operation it is possible using the key-pad to start natural unbalance compensation (menu item Unbalance Compensation) A six button key-pad on the front panel of BO-01KA is used for the setting and configuration of the protection relay.

The menu structure is on the fig.2. The basic display is the true r.m.s. value of natural unbalance current on the secondary winding of current transformer. Buttons on the fig.2 are used for moving in a main menu, submenus and between menu levels.. To set a values use the buttons and and button Ent for confirmation of this value. Signalling and tripping contact can be parameterised as normally open (NO) or normally closed (NC). Value of unbalance current for tripping has to be higher than current value for signalling. There are four output relays in the BO-01 KA: two for tripping (RE2, RE3 fig.3.), one for signalling (RE1 fig.3) and one for general fault (RE4 fig. 3). The output contacts of the relay are galvanically isolated against all other connection, test voltage is 2,5 kV. There are two full change-over contacts (two relay) for tripping and one full change-over contacts for signalling and failure. The protection can be fed by DC or AC (UPS) voltage. The BO-01 KA is intended for internal mounting.. Parameterisation and reading of stored values using a PC. Parameterisation software BO-01KA.exe is used for parameterisation and stored values reading of the capacitor protection relay. After program-start, a window shown in fig.1 appears.

4 In the field Connection the communication channel is selected and the communication can be started or stopped. In the field Parameters reading it is possible to read parameters from a file or from BO01KA. I the field Parameters Writing it is possible to write parameters to a file or to BO-01KA. The field Info shows the serial number of BO-01KA, date, time and the number of stored events. In the field Setting relay the network frequency, natural unbalance compensation and output relays mode (permanent/1second) can be selected. In the next field, Current transformer ratio of the current input (x/1A or x/5A) is specified. The field Unbalance protection contents the threshold values and time-delays for warning and tripping. The field Lower threshold Iu specifies the minimal threshold unbalance current for unbalance compensation. The field Lower threshold IL1 specifies the minimal threshold current IL1 Function buttons: Report shows all archived events. Erase report clears all archived events. Set date and time sets the real-time of BO-01KA Measuring shows the measured unbalance current. Start compensation starting unbalance compensation Erase compensation abort unbalance compensation In the field Limits there are limits of possible values for Current transformer ratio and Unbalance protection.
