CONFIDENTIAL QUESTION 1

EM/JAN 2012/MEC421/KJM457

End A and C of the connected links shown in Figure Q1 are controlled by the vertical motion of the piston rods of the hydraulic cylinders. For a short interval of motion, point A has an upward constant velocity of 3 m/s, and C has a downward constant velocity of 2 m/s. Determine the velocity and acceleration of point 6. (20 marks)

QUESTION 2

The assembly shown in Figure Q2 is at rest position where AED are in horizontal position. Rod OA is hinged at O, whilst end A is pinned to a rod AE. Rod AE is free to slide in the slotted link BC. The slotted link BC is rigidly connected to the collar D and freely to slide up and down along its shaft PQ. The assembly OAD is rotating with the angular velocity, w and constant angular acceleration, a of 1 rad/s2 about the Z-axis. If the collar D has constant acceleration aD = 0.05 m/s2 upwards, determine at the instant where the assembly OAD has made one complete rotation from the rest position: a) b) the angular velocity of rod OA, 6, and the angular acceleration of rod OA, 6. A homogeneous plate of mass m shown in Figure Q3 having the dimension of 2b x 2b is rotating with an angular velocity of q rad/s. Simulteneously, the whole assembly is rotating at X-axis with p rad/s. Determine at the instant shown, the angular momentum and kinetics energy of the plate about A. (20 marks)

CONFIDENTIAL QUESTION 4 a)

EM/JAN 2012/MEC421/KJM4S7

Discuss with the aid of diagrams, the four types of vibration response and give one practical example for each response. (6 marks)

Figure Q4 b) Figure Q4 shows a vibrating system which consists of a rod AB of mass, 3m = 3 kg and a disk of mass, M = 5 kg. The disk is firmly attached to the rod. Length of the rod is given by 3L where L = 0.5 m and diameter of the disk, D = 0.3 m. i) ) iii) Construct the free body diagram of the system and derive its equation of motion. Given spring stifness, k = 1200 N/m and damping constant, c = 25 Ns/m, determine the system frequency. Explain how can we reduce the system frequency. (14 marks)

CONFIDENTIAL QUESTION 5 a)

EM/JAN 2012/MEC421/KJM457

What do you understand by the following terms: i) ii) Resonance Transmissibility ratio (4 marks)

b)

A -1000 kg machine is mounted on four identical springs of total spring constant k and having negligible damping. The machine is subjected to a harmonic external force of amplitude F 0 = 490 N and frequency 180 rpm. Determine the amplitude of motion of the machine and maximum force transmitted to the foundation because of the unbalanced force when k = 1.96 x 106 N/m. (10 marks) If the spring constant k is changed to be 9.8 x 104 N/m and all the conditions stated in Question 5(b) are the same, what would happen to the amplitude of motion of the machine and maximum force transmitted to the foundation. Justify your answers. (6 marks)
