Abstract

Restrictions are every where, but it is the habit to break them. The size of mobile phones is much more compact in recent trends.so it is to carry them every where. These cannot detect if they are operated in silent mode. This project is a simple cell phone detector project. This handy cell phone detector, pocket size mobile transmission sniffer can sense the presence of an active cell phone in a radius of up to 8m.So it can be used to prevent use of mobile phones in examination halls, confidential rooms, etc. It is also useful for detecting the use of mobile phone for Spying and unauthorized video transmission. The circuit can detect the incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and video transmission even if the mobile phone is kept in the silent mode. The moment the Bug detects RF transmission signal from an activated mobile phone, it starts sounding a beep alarm and the LED blinks. The alarm continues until the signal transmission ceases.

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
As increase in the technology in the world using the electronic equipments are being used in a wrong way like, in the examination halls and confidential rooms. To avoid this we are introducing a project called CELLPHONE DETECTOR This handy, pocket-size mobile transmission detector or sniffer can sense the presence of an activated mobile cell phone from a distance of eight meters. So it can be used to prevent use of mobile phones in examination halls, confidential rooms, etc. It is also useful for detecting the use of mobile phone for Spying and unauthorized video transmission. The circuit can detect the incoming and outgoing calls, SMS and video transmission even if the mobile phone is kept in the silent mode. The moment the Bug detects RF transmission signal from an activated mobile phone,

it starts sounding a beep alarm and the LED blinks. The alarm continues until the signal transmission ceases.

1.2 Problem Statement Previously, there was no technology to detect the cell phones in
the examination hall and in cell phone restricted areas. There is manual checking and there is still a chance of having the cell phone with the person if he is not checked properly. So to avoid this problem, an automatic detection of cell phone is introduced. If this solution was implemented, it would greatly reduce the risk of cellularphones getting into secure facilities. Businesses and government would save a lot of money on security.

1.3 Motivation Cell phones are used in good way and also in a bad way. When the class is
going on, students intend to use their cell phones and not listening to what is being taught. These days, students are also carrying their cell phones to the examination halls to copy which would help them to get good marks. To avoid this problem, the cell phone detector is introduced

1.4 BACKGROUND
Almost every available cellular phone today has a connection to the Internet. This allows users to transfer files and data wherever they are. Cellular phones can send emails, text messages, picture text messages, video text messages, and upload data to the Internet. Some cellular phones come with 802.11 wirelesses built in and allow the phone to Connect to any nearby wireless networks. This provides an alternate connection method to the Internet and saves money if you are on a limited data plan. Also, connecting with 802.11 is most likely going to provide better throughput than using the cellular phone network. Since cameras and music have become popular features on cellular phones, manufacturers have started adding memory card slots. These memory cards provide expanded memory and allow more pictures to be taken or music files to be stored. Most memory cards can plug directly into the computer for easy data transfer. All these features make cellular phones today very versatile. They can connect with almost any storage medium or computer. In the years to come, cellular phones will continue to gain more and more features. Secure Facilities: Many businesses, government facilities, and military bases rely on keeping information protected. They build security fortresses that shield their money making

information from getting to the general public. These facilities have many computers that house the valuable information and are not connected to the Internet. Generally, access is restricted by guards with metal detectors and electronic devices are not allowed in or out without proper approval. In every secure facility it is hard to ensure that employees and visitors are not violating the policies. The only way to ensure someone is not carrying a cellular phone is to search everyone as they enter and exit. This requires a great deal of manpower and most companies cannot afford that level of security. Additionally, it will make the employees feel like the company does not trust them.

Cellular Phone Detectors Available Today

The most popular cellular phone detectors available on the market today are produced by Berkeley Varitronics Systems and Mobile Security Products. These companies produce the wolfhound cell phone detector and Cell buster respectively Berkeley Varitronics

Systems Wolfhound Cell phone Detector Berkeley Varitronics Systems wolfhound

cell phone detector will detect PCS, CDMA, GSM, and cellular bands using RF signatures. It also has the ability to directionally find or locate cellular phones that are nearby. Wolfhound cell phone detector features: 40 to 50 foot radius of coverage -60dBm sensitivity Audible alert Vibrating alert One-handed operation Continually scans for cellular phone uplink activity Integrated laser-assisted directional antenna Estimated battery runtime of 18 hours

The Wolfhound detects cellular phone communications in the area and not necessarily the phone or device that set it off. It took only two hours to find five cell phones that were either in use at the time or hidden in the jail cells on standby mode ready to take calls and with only

30minutes of operation, the device can detect many cell phones and identify the positions which led the team to find 10 mobile ph Wolfhound Cell Phone Detector is a belt-mounted, wireless sniffer specifically tuned to the RF signature of common cell phones including CDMA / WCDMA, GSM and Cellular bands. Wolfhound high speed scanning receiver utilizes a multi-band, internal omni-directional antenna system allowing security personnel to locate all nearby cell phones in standby mode* or actively using voice, text (SMS) or data transmissions. Wolfhound-Lite's compact and discreet design makes it the perfect stealth tool for enforcing your NO WIRELESS security policy in universities, government & military installations, hospitals, law enforcement agencies, financial institutions, prisons & correctional facilties. Like a pager, WolfhoundLite's simple yet effective design prevents wireless usage by alerting the operator via an OLED screen and/or vibrating alerts that detect and even aid in locating the wireless perpetrator.

Cell busters Cell Phone Detector

Cell busters cellular phone detector provides continuous monitoring for cellular phones and has a voice alert that tells the user to shut their phone off if detected. The Cell buster only receives and doesn't transmit, making it great for areas sensitive to cellular phone usage. It will also detect phones that are in standby mode. Cell busters cell phone detector features: Detect and prevent unauthorized cellular phone usage Detects analog and digital cellular phones CDMA,TDMA,GSM and PCS/PCN types Range adjustment Audio alert asks cellular phone users to switch off their phone Red alert light flashes brightly to attract attention Detects when a phone is switched on and not in use Easy to configure and simple to install

This cellular phone detector sounds like it would work wonderfully for keeping People from bringing their phones into a secure facility. It does not tell you that a cellular phone may take

up to 20 minute to detect if it is in standby and that the phone needs to be on. Also, just like the wolfhound, it doesn't provide any guarantee that it won't just detect random transmissions in the area.

Cell Phone Detection Techniques

This study examines detecting cellular phones when a person is entering a secure facility or cellular phone restricted area. The detection technique studied requires measuring a cell phone's electromagnetic properties and determining an identifiable signature. Measuring the RF spectrum around 240 - 400 MHz (outside the cellular Phone band) shows the most potential. Spurious emissions from cellular phones are monitored and recorded when the Phone is in standby or transmitting.

Objective:
The objectives of this project are detecting a cellular phone signal using an accurate signal detection technique in a place where a security is needed. Features like Bluetooth, high resolution cameras, microphones, internet make cellular Phones perfect for stealing data. That is why a method to detect cellular phones in a secure facility is needed.Detecting a cellular phone signal using an accurate signal detection technique is the focus of this project and the technique is more accurate and provides signal detection at a lower frequency, making it easier to work with.If this solution was implemented, it would greatly reduce the risk of cellular Phones getting into secure facilities. Businesses and government would save a lot of money on security. The solution would also greatly reduce the risk of their data leakingto the general public and losing even larger amounts of money.

Scope:Our scope of study is mainly to detect cellular phone in the limited range ofeight
distance.

Requirement :No external signal required for detecting the phone.

The band of frequencies is limited by the FCC and is likely to most Manufacturers.

System could potentially detect more than cellular phones. This method should work on future generations of cellular phones. System could potentially detect cellular phones even when they are off

Circuit diagram of mobile detector

NE555 TIMER: The555 timer IC is an integrated circuit (chip) used in a variety of timer, pulse generation and oscillator applications. The part is still in widespread Use because of its low price and good stability.

BC548 TRANSISTOR: The BC548 is a general purpose silicon NPN BJT transistor. Transistor is a CURRENT operated device which has a very large amount of current which flows without restraint through the device between the collector and emitter terminals. Transistors are circuit elements designed to function either as amplifiers or as switches.

LED: It is an electronic device that lights up when electricity is passed through it. LEDs are usually red. They are good for displaying images because they can be relatively small. A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semi conduct light source. LEDs are used as indicator lamps in many devices and are increasingly used for other lighting .When a light-emitting diode is forward biased (switched on) electrons are able to recombine with electron holes within the device, releasing energy in the form of photons.

SCHOTTY DIODE: The Schotty diode is semiconductor with a low forward voltage drop and a very fast switching action. When current flows through a diode there is a small voltage drop across the diode terminal. schotty diode is used us as speed switching in high frequency.

COIL INDUCTOR:Is a passive two terminal electrical component that stores in energy in magnetic field. It is typically made of a wire or other conductor wound in to a coil to increase a magnetic field.

Working mobile detector

This circuit can notice the use of GSM mobile phone in mobile restricted areas such as examination hall or confidential rooms etc.It can sense the activity of mobile phone from a distance of 8 meters .The sniffer keeps monitoring the RF (Radio frequency) level in the region and gives warning if the RF level increases due to mobile phone activity. If two similar units of sniffers are placed, the range can be improved. The circuit is able to detect all forms

of mobile phone activity even when it is in silent mode. The circuit is designed as a sensitive RF detector. The RF signal diode 1N3491 forms the major element. With the help of a resistor and a capacitor the signal diode picks up the RF energy in the area. In the standby mode, the output from the diode is around 0.6mV. It rises to 60mV in the presence of RF signal.Since the voltage from the sensor diode is too weak, three stages of amplification are required to give warning indication through speaker.Output signal from the diode is pre amplified by the transistor BFR96. It is a high frequency (Microwave frequency) low power transistor with huge current gain (approximately 15dB at 0.5GHz) and bandwidth. The pre amplified signal is fed to next amplifier stage built around IC TL071, it is a low noise JFET input op amp with low input bias and offset current. The biFET technology gives high slew rate to the IC.Here the TL071 is designed as an inverting amplifier; the inverting input of op amp receives the pre amplified signal from the first part. The potentio meter can be adjusted to vary the gain of op amp circuit. The amplified signal is then passed through a capacitor and diode; with the help of this arrangement we can introduce more stages to extend the range. The next potentiometer is used to vary the signal amplitude, then it is fed to amplifier stage built around IC LA4440, it is a two channel audio power amplifier with inbuilt dual channels for stereo and bridge amplifier applications. In dual mode the IC LA4440 gives 6W, where as in bridge mode it provides 19W. It has good ripple rejection of 40dB, small residual noise, built in over voltage and surge voltage protection, and pin to pin protection. In our circuit this IC is wired as bridge mode with only one input. The loudness of the circuit can be adjusted by changing the potentiometer. When the mobile phone is activated within the range of eight meters, a loud motor sound is heard through the speaker.Use good quality 8, 6W speaker in order to get clear warning sound. The RF reception and performance of the circuit is dependent on many factors such as output power from the mobile device, orientation and position of the cell phone. This circuit was designed to detect when a call is incoming in a cellular phone (even when the calling tone of the device is switched-off) by means of a flashing LED.An ordinary RF detector using tuned LC circuits is not suitable for detecting signals in the GHz frequency band used in mobile phones. The transmission frequency of mobile phones ranges from 0.9 to 3 GHz with a wavelength of 3.3 to 10 cm. So a circuit detecting gigahertz signals are required for a mobile bug. so its sensor coil L1 can detect the field emitted by the phone receiver

during an incoming call. The signal detected by the sensor coil is amplified by transistor Q1 and drives the monostable input pin of IC1. The IC's output voltage is doubled by C2 & D2 in order to drive the high-efficiency ultra-bright LED at a suitable peak-voltage.

Special notes:
Stand-by current drawing is less than 200A, therefore a power on/off switch is unnecessary. Sensitivity of this circuit depends on the sensor coil type. L1 can be made by winding 130 to 150 turns of 0.2 mm. enameled wire on a 5 cm. diameter former (e.g. a can). Remove the coil from the former and wind it with insulating tape, thus obtaining a stand-alone coil. A commercial 10mH miniature inductor, usually sold in the form of a tiny rectangular plastic box, can be used satisfactorily but with lower sensitivity. IC1 must be a CMos type: only these devices can safely operate at 1.5V supply or less. Any Schottky-barrier type diode can be used in place of the 1N5819: the BAT46 type is a very good choice
