Little Flower Hat

Little Flower Hat is worked in the round and top down, staring from the centre of the flower motif. The pattern will work in cotton, wool or acrylic for baby sizes, and wool or wool blend for larger sizes. Only basic skills are required. Skills needed Working in the round, yarn-overs, decreases. Sizes Preemie (0-3 months, 6-9 months, 12-18 months, 2-3 years, 4
years - Adult S). Shown in size 0-3 months. Finished hat circumference: 38 (41, 44, 46, 49, 52) cm/ 15 (16, 17.25, 18.25, 19.25, 20.5) in. Finished length: 12 (15, 16, 17, 19, 20) cm/ 4.75 (6, 6.25, 6.75, 7.5, 8) in.

Gauge (after blocking) 22 sts and 30 rows = 10 cm/ 4 in, in St st with 4 mm needle
23 sts 10 cm/ 4 in, in k2p2 rib pat with 3.25 mm needle

Materials Yarn:

100 (100, 100, 100, 150, 150) m/ 110 (110, 110, 110, 165, 165) yds of soft DK weight yarn: wool, cotton or acrylic. For best results use smooth yarn with good stitch definition. Needles and notions: one set of 4 mm (US size 6) DPNs one set of 3.25 mm (US size 3) DPNs st marker 3.5 mm (US size E) crochet hook (Note: DPNs can be replaced with long cir needles for magic loop method.) Take time to make a gauge swatch. Adjust needle size, if necessary.

Directions
The hat is worked in the rnd and top down, starting from the centre of the hexagon-shaped flower motif. Work flower hexagon: With 4 mm DPNs, crochet hook and using the crochet circular method (see tutorial on last page), CO 12 sts, pm. Work Flower Hexagon Chart or foll written instructions below. If you use chart, work through Rnd 20, then foll written instructions for your size. Rnd 1: Purl. Rnd 2: *Yo, k1* 12 times 24 sts. Rnd 3: Purl. Rnd 4: *Yo, k2* 12 times 36 sts. Rnds 5-6: *P1, k2* 12 times. Rnd 7: *P1, k2, yo, p1, yo, k2* 6 times 48 sts. Rnds 8-11: *P1, k2, p3, k2* 6 times. Rnd 12: *Yo, k1, yo, k2, p3, k2* 6 times 60 sts. Next rnd: Knit, dec 8 (10, 8, 10, 12, 14) sts evenly spaced 76 (80, 88, 92, 96, 100) sts.

Work rib: Next rnd: Change to 3.25 mm needle, *k2, p2* to end. Work rib for 3 (3.5, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5, 3.5) cm/ 1.2 (1.4, 1.4, 1.4, 1.4, 1.4) in. Bind off: You can either BO in pat loosely (working all p sts as if to purl, and all k sts as if to knit) or use the flexible method for a stretchier edge: Flexible BO: Knit 1 rnd. BO rnd: (Note: This method of BO must be worked tightly, you might need to go down in needle size.) Place removable marker into the first st on L needle. Yo, p1 (without removing marker), pass the yo over the last worked st. *Yo, p1, pass 2 sts from R needle over the last worked st* rep until you run out of sts. After BO, there will be 1 st left on R needle. Yo, pick up & k1 st, inserting R needle into the st with marker, remove marker, pass yo and st on R needle over the new st. Break yarn. Weave in end and block the hat.

hold loop here

Make a loop winding yarn 3 times around a finger or a pen. Leave 2 cm/ 1 in tail.

Carefully take the loop off. Hold it with L hand, with working yarn at the top, and tail under the loop.

Insert crochet hook into the loop and under tail. Wind yarn around hook.

Pull yarn out through the loop.

Wind yarn around hook again and pull yarn through the small loop on hook.

The first st is complete.

Insert hook into the large Wind yarn around hook and loop again. Wind yarn pull yarn through the small around hook and bring it out loop on hook. through the loop.

The second st is complete.

Repeat steps 7 and 8 to make two more sts.

Place the 4 sts on a DPN and cast on 4 more sts.

Place 4 new sts on another DPN and cast on 4 more sts. Place them on 3rd DPN.

Note: 1. This CO method creates a well defined circle with a hole in the centre.
