Best Coffee House The Laughing goaT Coffeehouse

BEST

The folks that run the Pearl Street Laughing Goat like to think of their caffeine house as the original gangsta of Boulder coffee houses. Other longtime purveyors may take umbrage, but theres no doubt, the Goat has created a fine bohemian hangout just east of the downtown mall. The coffeehouse brews single-origin varietals, organically certified, fairly traded premium coffees, roasted especially for them by a small roaster in Denver. Along with a full menu of breads, treats and coffees, lovingly crafted and poured by devoted baristas, the Pearl Street Laughing Goat hosts live music and other performances every night of the week. Hurrah for supporting the arts, Goats! CU students know they can run to the Norlin Library to get a cup of Goat Joe whenever the library is open, too. Norlin Library, 1720 Pleasant St., Boulder , 1709 Pearl St., Boulder, 2907 55th St., Boulder, thelaughinggoat.com.

When CU students need a quick lunch, a nice sit-down dinner when the folks are visiting town, or when they get the late-night munchies, Golden Sun Chinese restaurant often makes the cut. The restaurant near the corner of 28th Street and Arapahoe Avenue carries the typical Chinese fare sesame chicken (popular with students, manager Tina Zu said), Kung Pao Shrimp, Szechuan Beef, Chow Mein Noodles, Fried Rice and the like. But Zu said regular customers also appreciate the items found on the Golden Sun Chef Specials menu. They like Chili Pepper Chicken and Chinese Twice Cooked Pork, Zu said. The Golden Sun is open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. until 2 in the morning. 1635 28th St., Boulder, 303.449.0783, bouldergoldensun.com. Best Bagel MOES BROADWAY BAGEL

Best Bakery AND Best Dessert BOuLDER BAkED

Kevin and Kirsten Comstock grew up in a family that did good desserts. On moms side was a tradition of Southern cakes. On dads side were brownies and cookies and other baked goodies. About 10 years ago, the brother and sister tandem realized it was hard to find quality old-fashioned desserts in area restaurants. So they cooked up the idea for Boulder Baked, a caf and delivery service that specializes in home-style goodness. More than anything its the consistent quality that makes people coming back, Kevin Comstock said. We use old-fashioned recipes with premium ingredients. We use butter instead of margarine, eggs instead of substitutes, real sugar instead of molasses or corn syrup. We serve home-style desserts you cant find anywhere else. Kevin handles front-ofhouse duties, and Kirsten oversees the kitchen. While Boulder Baked started as a delivery outfit their made-to-order cookie boxes, delivered to your door right after they come out of the oven - still makes up a healthy sized portion of the bakerys business, Kevin said. Cupcakes, like the strawberry shortcut version or the cookie dough cupcake, are also popular. Boulder Baked also has an array of vegan and gluten-free deserts to choose from, as well. Kevin Comstock said, however, its one of the bakerys earliest items, the carrot cake, made with an old family recipe, that remains the standard bearer. That carrot cake that we grew up with, thats our bar, Kevin said. Everything we do here, as far as Im concerned, has to be on par with that. 1911 Broadway St., Boulder, 303.444.4999, boulderbaked.com. Being in the middle of the country, it took a while for Boulder to get used to eating a boiled bread with a hole in it something that wasnt a donut for breakfast. Thanks to Moes Broadway Bagel, which has been making and serving fine bagels to locals for 21 years, the bagel is here in Boulder to stay. Over the years, Moes has introduced and perfected bagels of all varieties tomato cheddar, jalapeo, cranberry walnut and more and schmeared them with fine cream cheeses. The Moes build-your-own or specialty bagel sandwich has also become a local lunchtime staple. And each customer gets the moeservice. Thats a customer first, satisfaction guaranteed service, said general manager Steve Pagnotta. So what really makes a Moes bagel so good? Easy, Pagnotta said. We make the bagels with love. 3075 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.442.4427, 2650 Broadway, Boulder, 303.444.3252, 3267 28th St., Boulder, 720.406.9000, moesbagel.com. Best Breakfast ThE Buff RESTAuRAnT

Longtime diners at The Buff Restaurant know the Boulder establishment moved from its former digs on 28th Street to Canyon Boulevard this past January. The new location is a little bigger and a lot more modern, said Chris Meyer, who since 1995 has owned The Buff with his wife, Jacquelyn Sproul. What hasnt changed is the Buffs awesome grub, like the popular Two Step, the Ole Skillet or the Breakfast Tacos. Theyre getting as many rave reviews as they ever have, Meyer said. The restaurant is open from early until 2 p.m. every day, and that means it puts its focus on breakfast and simple, delicious lunches. For years, one of the towns most popular morning chow houses, The Buff puts the customers needs first and foremost. We work on pleasing each and every person who comes through the door, Meyer said. 2600 Canyon Blvd., Boulder, 303.442.9150, buffrestaurant.com. Best Brew Pub Walnut BreWery

Brewpubs werent invented during the last decade. Thats just when they blew up in Boulder County, and elsewhere. To find Boulders first brewpub, you need to head to the Walnut Brewery, which has been crafting its own beer right on the restaurants premises since 1990. Since then, the Walnut has earned several craft brew awards, and continues to be a hotspot for beer hounds and food lovers. Why? One man Rodney Taylor, the Walnut Brewerys brew master. Hes been part of the craft beer movement for 20 plus years, and he makes really exceptional beers, said Walnut Brewery manager Chris Portillo. Anybody that tastes any of the beers that he makes knows that theyre exceptional. He puts a lot of work into that. The Indian Peaks Pale Ale is the Walnuts signature brew. But people love the seasonal beers Taylor concocts, as well. We have a pretty big following when the Sled Dog Red comes out the Old Thumper Barleywine comes out, Portillo said. 1123 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.447.1345, walnutbrewery.com. Runner Up: Mountain Sun Pubs & Breweries, 1535 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.546.0886, 627 S. Broadway St., Boulder, 303.543.0886, mountainsunpub.com

Best Beer Selection Backcountry Pizza & taPhouse

Whether youre looking for a rare Belgian brew on tap, a Birrificio del Ducato aged barleywine from Italy or the latest IPA from a Colorado brewer, chances are Backcountry Pizza and Taphouse has it. The pub carries nearly 70 brews on tap, and more than 300 others in bottles. You can also encounter staff members who are Cicerone trained thats the rigorous certification training program for beer masters, similar to a wine sommelier. What you wont find at Backcountry, though, is a snooty attitude. We try really hard not to be pretentious, said manager Mary Boerman. We know a lot about beer, but we like to have fun and introduce people to knew things. The taphouse hosts regular beer-tasting events, too, where enthusiasts of all levels can try new tipple, and take down one of the restaurants signature pizzas or burgers. 2319 Arapahoe Ave., Boulder, 303.449.4285, backcountrypizzaandtaphouse.com. Runner Up: Old Chicago Pizza & Taproom, 1102 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.443.5031, oldchicago.com

Best Elegant Dining AND Best Wine Selection Frasca FooD anD Wine

Students, you can sit in your dorm with Chef Boyardee and a box of wine, or you can put on a nice shirt and enjoy an elegant and transformative experience in what is arguably Boulders classiest restaurant. Frasca pays homage to Italys Friuli-Venezia Giulia region with a menu that highlights the sophisticated flavors of the area and a wine program that cellars more than 200 and pairs exciting choices with meat in an uncomplicated way. One of the most important things about fine dining that is lost by many professionals is the empathy that we have for our guest and what it takes to make a reservation to get here, says owner Bobby Stuckey. We push ourselves to be very in tune with that. Frasca champions local farms and offers the best naturally raised meats and organically grown produce available. Its a beautiful thing to then see these local ingredients combined in a meal that is wonderfully Friulian. 1738 Pearl St., Boulder, 303.442.6966, frascafoodandwine.com. Best Classy Bar the Bitter Bar

At The Bitter Bar, its all about the vibe and balance. Dimly lit and comfortable, the bar puts a new, hip spin on the cocktail lounge. When it comes to The Bitter Bars cocktails, its mixologists know how to pour a perfect drink. Theres a fine line between too sweet or too tart too bitter, said general manager Burton Daniel. I think weve always done an incredible job of making balanced cocktails that have nuances of all those things. Daniel suggests The Cowboy, a fine blend of rye whiskey, lemon juice, maple-cayenne syrup and orange bitters. Its the sort of drink where you can tell theres whiskey in it, but its not overpowering, Daniel said. Part of The Bitter Bars allure comes from its kitchen, too. Menu highlights include the chefs housemade pasta dishes, and a Crispy Chicken. They crisp up the skin in a skillet and finish it up in the oven, Daniel said. Thats our biggest seller right now. Yum. 835 Walnut St., Boulder, 303.442.3050, thebitterbar.com. Runner Up: Jill's Restaurant & Bistro, 900 Walnut St., Boulder, 720.406.7399, stjulien.com

One of the secrets to a satisfying sandwich is the quality of the bread. Deli Zone, which boasts three busy locales in Boulder, knows from good bread. We have our own bakery, said Jon Stuckenschneider, who works the counter at the Deli Zone on the Hill. All the bread gets sent here daily from our own bakery. Dont expect something fancy when you pop in for something to fill your stomach. The radio is usually blasting tunes, the TV is set on a sports channel, and the dudes working the grill are, well, dudes. If youre seriously hungry, take a bite out of the Baby Kong. Thats by far our favorite sandwich, Stuckenschneider said. Its got fresh eggs, sausage, hash browns, American cheese. Its thrown through the toaster so it comes out nice and hot. 1322 College Ave., Boulder, 303.449.6952, 4800 Baseline Rd., Boulder, Suite D-104, 303.499.9213, 2900 Valmont Rd., Suite D1, Boulder, 303.447.9349, delizone.net. Admit it: your tongue starts wagging when you catch a glimpse of Bumper Crops unmistakable red truck. This food-mobile has made a huge splash in its first year rolling around Boulder, culminating with our readers votes in this category. Business partners Dave Miller and Gary Silverman have more than 90 years of combined fine dining restaurant experience, and boy does it show. Our philosophy is simple: food from scratch, good ingredients, slow cooking, no need to manipulate it, says Miller. We receive a lot of compliments on how our flavors stand out, and thats largely due to our simple, honest cooking and ingredients.Bumper Crops food is inspired by the cuisine and culture of New Mexico. And while it did not set out to be a taco truck, the cries of the people could not be ignored. Today its signature is tacos, although a Reuben or Mac n Cheese will steer you right, too. What makes Rios house margarita one of the best in town? While traditional margaritas rely on that tart flavor that makes your lips pucker up to your ears, at Rio, they like to keep things on the sweeter side, without that limy bite, says Manager Stephanie Gaydos. Want to try something different? Big Tex margarita hits the spot with fresh squeezed lemon and lime juice. Perhaps another reason Rio pours so many yummy margaritas the prices. Thursday night from 9 p.m. to close means $4 margaritas. Whether you need an excuse to get outside or a reason to round up friends after work, the rooftop at Rio is where its at. If you havent been there lately, go check it out since theyve completely remodeled these digs. Best Local Musician/Group Gasoline lollipops

Gasoline Lollipops describes themselves as an alt country/roots rock quartet from the mountains of Northern Colorado that are the soundtrack of the American highway. Rose Clay, the bands founder, certainly knows a thing or two about music. His mother, also a songwriter, even worked with music legend Willie Nelson. The bands style is somewhat theatrical, using their music to create a soundscape that conjures vivid pictures. As you pass through the lowlands of Tennessee, youll hear barn dances scatter across the fields, while on the planes of Eastern Colorado, youll be haunted by murder ballads and love lost. This is the canvas that the Gasoline Lollipops paint so well, says their Facebook bio. One part rockabilly and one part alternative rock, the Gasoline Lollipops have carved out a space for themselves in the Boulder music scene with a sound and feel that is all their own. facebook.com/ gasolinelollipops. When asked to describe his band, Derek Weiman, guitarist and singer, replies, Casual Sinners is not just a band, but a way of life. They are a modern rock band with a bit of a grunge sound. Their other influences include folk, hard rock, classic rock and even dance, giving them an eclectic sound that makes for a unique brand of rock. Both the groups front men, Weimen and Nate Folsom, are Boulder natives and proud to have carved out a name for themselves in the local music scene. Weimens guitar riffs are soulful and well crafted, while his voice is on the edgier side. By contract, Folsom provides rich, smooth vocals, which contract nicely. Theyre backed by what Weiman calls a driving, powerful rhythm section. The Casual Sinners play live nearly every weekend, and have a self-titled EP set for release within the next couple of months. Best CU Student Organization University of Colorado Program CoUnCil

Program Council has been a vital part of CU campus culture since the 1950s. Our goal is to bring affordable, quality entertainment to the CU Boulder campus and community, said Kelsey Gonzalez, the current Director of the student organization. Program Council achieves this by booking concerts and comedians for on-campus performances, as well as hosting viewings of films, including cult classics, current-run flicks and even yet-to-be-released titles. Its impressive, particularly given that this is a student-led effort. It is the best way to get your foot in the door in the music entertainment industry while still being in college, Gonzalez explains. In fact, many of Program Councils student leaders make solid industry connections through the experience, and even line up their first post-graduation jobs. Best Pool Tables THe 28TH sTreeT TAvern

Heres the skinny on those popular pool tables at the 28th Street Tavern, according to owner Matt Notter. Depending on the time of year, we have pool leagues four to five nights a week. Weve been in business for four and a half years, and have had our tables for the same amount of time. Were a sports bar, so pool seemed a natural fit and we have the room to make it a nice set-up. The atmosphere and space in our place makes it appealing to our pool players, and to our customers in general, as well as our specials and our food. The tables arent too crowded, and its a nice neighborhood bar. We re-felt our tables every year, and keep them clean. Best Running and Hiking Trail cHAuTAuquA pArk

Historic Chautauqua Park offers everything from sweeping views to miles of trails to a variety of wildlife. Yet perhaps its greatest perk is its proximity to the city, said Jim Reeder, division manager, City of Boulder Open Space. Its great because its close in, you dont have to drive hours to get to it, Reeder said. You gain immediate height, get great vistas of mountains and city. In addition to the sweeping views, the extensive trail system offers trails that are exposed to the sun, and those that are in the cool of shade, as well as the opportunity to put together any length of hike or run using the many trails. Most trails are relatively easy hikes; people of all abilities can use (them), whether youre a runner, hiker, or out for a stroll, Reeder said. The area is known for bears and mountain lions, as well as a range of other species, and raptors often soar over the Flatirons. Chances are as good there of seeing wildlife as anywhere in the system, Reeder said. Its impressive that you see it that close to the city. The ranger cottage, dining hall and other amenities offer additional experiences. Folks can stop in before or after a hike and enjoy all the things Chautauqua has to offer, Reeder said. 900 Baseline Rd., Boulder, 303.442.3282, chautauqua.com. Best Grocery Store (TIE) King soopers

King Soopers spokesperson Kelli McGannon says that, although King Soopers is a division of the large Kroger company, they are able to properly address the needs of a small community. We recognize every day that our customers have a choice on where to shop, McGannon says. We work hard to earn their business. We make sure our stores are not a cookie cutter approach and we make sure our stores are relevant to the customers who are shopping them. McGannon also mentions that Krogers size Kroger owns 2,424 stores in 31 states - can be a major benefit for King Soopers shoppers. We are able to leverage the size of Kroger to get additional savings on products that were able to pass on to the customers but were still given the ability to be locally headquartered and make local decisions that are important to the communities we serve, she says. 16050 30th St., Boulder, 303.443.9622; 3600 Table Mesa Dr., Boulder, 303.499.4004; 6550 Lookout Rd., Boulder, 303.530.1020, kingsoopers.com.

John Elwoods dry cleaning service is a Boulder original that began with Dugout Cleaners opened by Vincent Elwood, Sr., in 1923. Their expansion to four stores in the area is a testament to their desirability and success in the community. Their long history in the community doesnt mean they have fallen behind: in fact, theyre using cutting-edge technology like heat seals for computerized, tagless garment tracking. Johns Cleaners also uses SystemK4, an environmentally friendly, halogen-free solvent made by Kreussler. Its a brand new solvent that they evolved, Elwood says. Im real happy with it. I think it does a better job than most of the solvents that are out there. Johns Cleaners works hard to be green in other ways, too. They use fuelefficient delivery vans for their free pickup and delivery service, recycle most of the hangers that are returned to them and use solar-power at their home office. 4800 Baseline Rd., Boulder, 303.665.9493; 3325 28th St. #6, Boulder, 303.444.2877, johnsdrycleaners.com Runner Up: Art Cleaners, 1715 15th St., Boulder; 303.440.8600, artcleaners.com

Best Computer Store Apple Store

Even if you dont own a Mac, you might still consider the Apple Store to be Boulder Countys best computer store. Why? For starters, its hard to resist the eye candy. The crisp white environment displays a colorful array of devices and accessories that are just plain fun to touch. Everyone from the CU student to the seasoned professional has gotten sucked into the tech vortex. Once you own an iAnything, getting your desktop, laptop, phone or pad fixed, upgraded or outfitted is a snap at an Apple Store. Easy online appointment scheduling lets you get in and out fast, but speed never seems to sacrifice solutions. Dedicated Mac-heads seem to know intuitively how to remedy or explain any issue. But then again, isnt that what Apple is all about?
