1) When comparing this type of configuration, Carrier to Sun Input Split, against Toyotas configuration Carrier to Ring Input Split, due to the similarity of the 2 systems, both results in the same torque for the 3 gears. Both system have their system input in the carrier gear while the only difference in this configuration is which component (Motor or Generator) is connected to sun and ring gear. After doing the calculation for both system, with the same road parameters and drivetrain components, it is clear that the Toyota system has a better power conversion from the engine to the output shaft, 90.6 KW versus 37.8 KW. On the other hand, the system Carrier to Sun Input Split, provides more power to the ring gear, resulting in a higher capacity to generate electric power. Therefore, a bigger motor will be required to fulfill the energy need as well as a bigger storage system. In conclusion, the Toyota system has significant lower cost and a better efficiency when considering the type of losses involved in the process such as gearing losses, charging/discharging battery and energy conversion.

NOTE: The calculations are in the next 2 pages.

2 A) The shown diagram represents a Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle, utilizing a parallel system. B) As a characteristic from a PHEV, the energy storage system can be recharged through the power grid or the generator. This architecture basically 3 features. The first feature is the electric launch, which consists in operating the vehicle exclusively on electricity, consuming the stored energy from the battery until a certain level is achieved, when then the ICE will be engaged and started. An important parameter for this feature is the AER (All electric range), which shows how far an electric vehicle can drive with the battery charge. The second feature is the Engine Stop/Start which consists in controlling the ICEs function according to the demanded acceleration. For hard acceleration, the clutch will be engaged and the ICE will drive the vehicle. If light or none acceleration is demanded, the clutch will be disengaged and the ICE will be shutdown. The Third feature is the Engine Assist or Power boost. When the clutch is engaged, the engine provide the power to drive the car. If more acceleration is needed, the electric machine can provide the extra power, consuming the battery stored energy. C) The Clutch is important in this architecture because it controls from which source the power will come from. When engaged, the clutch starts the engine, providing power for the transmission system and the generator. It also allows the power summation of the engine and the motor. When the clutch is disengaged, the engine can be shut down and the car can be driven only by the motor.
