This one is certainly no exception. n the !ery outset of this pro"ect# I would like to extend my sincere & heartfelt obligation towards all the personages who ha!e helped me in this endea!or. $ithout their acti!e guidance# help# cooperation & encouragement# I would not ha!e made headway in the pro"ect. %irst and foremost# I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mr' B' Arun (u#ar I was pri!ileged to experience a sustained enthusiastic and in!ol!ed interest from his side. .'A"+!rac!%./uali0ation is a !ery essential topic in data communication. 1ue to the communication channel# which can be wireline or wireless and furthermore time !ariant# the transmitted data symbols are distorted linearly o!er the channel. 2owe!er# to o!ercome the effects of the channel# one can employ an e/uali0er which is adapted during the transmission of a training se/uence. If transmission of training is not possible or not a!ailable# other ways ha!e to be found to impro!e system performance.

4'A**lica!ion%If the communication signals belong to a finite alphabet# signal properties are exploited to find an e/uali0er without transmission of training data. 3enerally# a cost function is defined which is iterati!ely minimi0ed and an optimal solution is found. ther methods which try to estimate 2igher rder 4tatistics of the signals and according to these estimates an in!erse is computed. This paper shows a short o!er!iew about blind e/uali0ation strategies and tries to sketch a few basic ideas when designing algorithms for blind e/uali0ation. .

5',onclu+ion%$e ha!e seen that blind e/uali0ation is not a tri!ial task since no data is a!ailable to pro!ide the update algorithm with feedback on the estimation /uality of the channel impulse response or its in!erse. 2owe!er# if we restrict the signals we transmit to a restricted range 5+lphabet6 it is possible to exploit signal statistics to achie!e self reco!ering e/uali0ation. 7ost fre/uently a cost function is defined and is minimi0ed by a 431 algorithm. The other approach tries to exploit higher order statistical measures and according to the computed /uantities an in!erse is found. $e ha!e seen se!eral different algorithms 54ato# 83-# 4top*and*3o# (7+# 4hal!i*$einstein6 which work /uite well in practice. 3enerally it is !ery hard to analy0e con!ergence beha!ior of all these blind algorithms. Thus# research is still ongoing in defining new cost functions 5error functions6 or 2 4 based approaches for !arious application scenarios.
