Describe the lessons activities and content to provide a clear overview of the lesson.

Curriculum Standards

Description and Background The Problem Solving Mat, which will have a sample question, will serve Information as the hook of this lesson. The teacher will give the students a problem
to solve which will lead to the discussion of two step word problems. The teacher will place a problem on the board and go through the problem step by step for the students. The teacher will work through a problem with the students on the worksheet. Questions will be asked such as How do you know when to add or subtract in a two step word problem or can parts and wholes be determined from two step problems? The teacher will have the student complete a problem by themselves to see if they fully understand. The students will complete a worksheet on two step word problems to show they have internalized the knowledge. The lesson will be concluded by the teacher reviewing the two step word problems process. The teacher will wrap up the lesson by telling the students to practice the process for homework with his or her parents. The students will complete a chapter nine test which will include two step word problems.
What will students be able to do at the conclusion of this lesson? Make sure that your objective(s) are measurable.

Lesson Objectives

The student will be able to solve two step word problems.

How will I vary these objectives for students who do not understand the material? How will I vary these objectives for students who have already mastered the concept? How will I vary these objectives for students who are presently learning English?

Varying Objectives for Individuals Needs

For students who do not understand the material, the teacher will work with them on the two-step problems step by step. For students who have already mastered the concept, the teacher will allow them to help other students or review more problems for practice.

For students who are presently learning English, the material will be sent to the TESOL teacher.

Why is it important for the students to learn this content?

Statement of Purpose

It is important for students to learn this content so they will be able to solve two step word problems. Problem solving is a part of everyday life so it is important for students to know how to do it.
What materials and supplies are needed to help your students achieve the stated objectives? What will the teacher need? What will the students need? What other resources are needed? Will you use resource speakers?

Materials and Resources

The teachers will use the Lumens, Problem Solving Mat, and www.pearsonsuccess.net. The students will need pencils, math journals, and the math worksheet.

Anticipatory Set

What will you do to motivate the students and get their attention? What is hook that will serve as a focus for the lessons activities?

The Problem Solving Mat which will have a sample question will serve as the hook of this lesson.

Part II: IMPLEMENTATION

How will I find out what students already know about this topic?

Pre-assessment

The teacher will give the students a problem to solve which will lead to the discussion of two step word problems.
What will I do to show students what is expected?

Teacher Modeling or Demonstration Guided Practice

The teacher will place a problem on the board and go through the problem step by step for the students.
What will we do together as they learn how to succeed at the new task?

The teacher will work through a problem with the students on the worksheet.
What questions will you ask to determine if students understand so far? What techniques or strategies will be used to determine if students understand so far?

Checking for Understanding

Questions will be asked such as, How do you know when to add or subtract in a two step word problem or can parts and wholes be determined from two step problems? The teacher will have the student complete a problem by themselves to see if they fully understand.
What will students do by themselves to show that they have internalized the knowledge?

Independent Practice Closure

The students will complete a worksheet on two step word problems to show they have internalized the knowledge.
How will I conclude the lesson and relate it to future experiences? How will you wrap up the lesson to reinforce concepts taught during the lesson?

PART III: REFLECTION

Describe the strengths of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management. Describe the strengths of student engagement.

Strengths

A strength of teaching this lesson was the engagement of the students because they enjoyed telling making up his or her own two step problem. When they were making up problems and solving them then I knew they understood the concept. The students were very engaged in the lesson once they understood the concept more. When some students did not understand then those students were worked with individually
Describe the weaknesses of your instructional techniques, strategies and classroom management. Describe the weaknesses of student engagement.

Weaknesses

The only weakness I had was that I realized that you have to be very clear when teaching new concepts. I do not think I was very clear at the beginning when teaching the concept of two step word problems.
What would you change when teaching this lesson again?

Suggestions for Improvement

When teaching this lesson again I would be very clear and possibly use manipulatives to help the students understand more.
