The ENGLISH 101 Research Project

Final ePortfolio (100 points)

The last weeks of the semester focus on the final 101 research project, an assignment that all students in ENG 101 at John Jay College must do. All of the components of this project will be uploaded to your ePortfolio. You will create your own titles but there are certain components that must be done. Your grades for this second half of the course will be determined by deadlines and an ongoing point system (similar to the midterm). People who do NOT accumulate 95 points by the final deadline will need to come to class on exam day for the necessary tutorials. There are multiple, required components for ENG 101 research projects: 1) a research proposal 2) an annotated bibliography 3) a literature review/re-mix project 4) an overview of your research methodology 5) collection and analysis of your human subjects/primary source data 6) overall introduction and conclusion to your research. Because your research project will be presented on your ePortfolio, please remember that you are crafting a public text. This means that you have a public, social responsibility for how you present your research and for what you are socially and intellectually contributing.

Research Proposal
Deadline: April 3
1) You have a titled INTRODUCTION section that introduces the topic and central issues. You convince readers of the importance of the topic without BIAS. 2) You have a titled BACKGROUND section that offers an overview of the project and includes at least 1-2 sources. You use in-text citations correctly. All of your citations appear in the APA bibliographic list at the bottom of the page. 3) You have a titled RESEARCH QUESTION section that offers your research question(s) in qualitative format. 4) You have a titled METHODOLOGY section that describes with detail, almost like a cooking recipe, your methods. You understand PRIMARY SOURCES. 5) You have a titled STANCE section that shows your connection to this project. Your choice of traditional or political approach matches your study. 6) You have a titled CONCLUSION section that communicates your seriousness and vision for the future of this topic. 7) You have no surface errors in the document and meet the length requirements. 8) You include at least one weblink from a scholarly source and use a visual(s) to more fully communicate the topic of study. 9) Your subsections are organized and specified consistently. 10) You met all deadlines: a) reading response #8, b) March 27 lab work w/ research proposal submitted; c) April 3 upload to ePortfolio.

Re-Mix Project
Deadline: April 10
If you are not clear on the requirements for left tabs, go to 101 demo ePortfolio (the icon is a yellow 101 image). Click on RESEARCH PROJECT top tab.

General Set-Up

41) You have created all of the required left tabs under your research project section (note that this is different from the DAB section). 42) You have uploaded drafts to your draft gallery of your process so far (and placed this after your research proposal). The in-class assignment for the Re-Mix Project (see Lab #7) is included here.

!
101 Final Portfolio Deadlines & Research Guidelines 4!

43) You have given your research project an interesting title (capitalized and spelled correctly). The DAB now also has an interesting title as well. 44) If necessary, the first landing page of the DAB has an image or text; nothing there is empty.
This section is a literature review that must be both THOROUGH and interesting! You need to include your own perspectives but what is most important is that you show you know your stuff!

The SOURCES

45) The opening paragraph is interesting and engaging. It offers us a sense of what this topic is about. 46) Your DAB collected at least 16 sources if you fulfilled the assignment. You have included at least 12 of those DAB sources here in the Re-Mix/Lit Review. 47) When you reference information from EACH source (all 12), you NAME that source in the sentence and weblink that source back to the DAB or include an APA bibliography at the bottom of the page. 48) You use at least 2 quotes in this piece: each quote has a lead-in and is discussed FULLY. No quotes are floating. 49) Your DAB collected MANY visual images if you fulfilled the assignment. You have included at least 5 of those visual images here in the Re-Mix/Lit Review. 50) You provide source credit for the visual images at the bottom of the page in smaller print. 51) Your DAB collected MANY videos if you fulfilled the assignment. You have included at least 2 of those videos here in the Re-Mix/Lit Review. They are embedded in the text and flow with the essay. 52) The entire essay flows. You are showing a point and use outside references to make that point even stronger. 53) Each paragraph works well. You do not have multiple points in one paragraph, making it sound like you are writing a list rather than an essay. 54) You offer a critical and in-depth look at your sources but you still have flavor and personality with this writing. 55) You use subsection titles in interesting ways to break up this writing (subsections should be centered, boldfaced, etc). 56) You proofread and edit all of your writing closely so that there are no surface errors. 57) Your literature review has an interesting title. After the title, you have the words Literature Review in parentheses. The title is spelled and capitalized correctly.

Reflection & Final Issues

58) In the REFLECTIONS section of your ePortfolio, you create a new page/left tab that answers the following in at least 300 words: Now you are ready to start interviewing and make your own unique contribution. What
new goals do you have for yourself with this research project?

What do you think of ALL of the writing that you have done so far? Why? What do you think of ALL of the digital work that you have done so far? Why? 59) You have a total of three reflections (as separate left tabs under REFLECTIONS) just for the research project now. 60) You met all deadlines for the DAB and Re-Mix project and used class time effectively.
