Vastu Purush Mandala (VPM) contains the essence
of Vastu Shastra, the Vedic Space Alchemy. To
understand the deep secrets of Vastu it is imperative
to know Vastu Purush Mandala and how it came
into existence. The understanding of it is easier for
those who have some depth in meditation and can get
established in Vigyanmaya Kosha and perceive with
their Manas Chakshu (Clairvoyance or Third Eye).
Vastu Purush Mandala is the omnipresent
soul residing in a building. When you observe the
energy elds, that develop at different stages of the

building starting from the stage of vacant plot to
digging of the land to laying of the foundation to
completion of the building and nally to the point
when it is inhabited by the people when you observe
all this through your mind-senses, you unravel the
secrets of Vastu Purush Mandala.
Vastu Purush
There is an engaging story mentioned in the beginning
of the Vastu Shastra. The story is about a erce war
between the gods (devtas) and demons (asuras). In
this war, Lord Shiva supported the devtas, while
Andhakasur (has also been explained on page 22)
was ghting for the asuras.
During this war, some drops of sweat fell on
the Earth. This led to the birth of a strong and giant-
sized male, who scared devtas and asuras, alike. The
devtas thought he was one of the asuras, while the
latter mistook him to be a devta. So, the ght halted.
The devtas and asuras together took this giant male
to Lord Brahma. Lord Brahma called this giant, his

manas putra and named him Vastu Purush.
In this manner, the Vastu Purush came into

existence. This Vastu Purush then lay down to sleep
in a specic posture. Some parts of his body were
inhabited by the devtas, others by the asuras.
Lord Brahma ordered that full attention should
be paid to the Vastu Purush while constructing a
building, town, pond, temple and other structures,
otherwise, it would be eaten by the asuras (troubled
by miseries). Whoever revered the Vastu Purush
would be supported by devtas (gain ease and comfort)
in his cause. Their problem was solved, the devtas
and asuras happily bade Lord Brahma farewell.
Hidden Secrets in Symbols
Of course, this story is symbolic, because in the Vedas
and Vedant Darshan (Vedic philosophy), deep secrets
have been woven into stories. To unlock the secrets,
deeper meanings of the stories, in the form of symbols,
have to be understood. Once we understand them, we
are in a position to comprehend the science of life. Focus
on the story and decode the words in a contemporary
perspective and it will reveal its meaning.
21 Vastu Purush Mandala
The story of the Vastu Purush is such a
signicant symbolic story, because those same
principles have always been used to create and run
the whole world at the micro or the macro level.
The equation has remained the same, so, it needs
careful comprehension. This war between the gods
and demons did not happen once upon a time; it
is happening every moment; even at this particular
moment. In all places, this war continues.
The word dev basically means self-illuminating.
A power which is supportive for accomplishing a
task is called dev. The term asura is meaningful. In
Sanskrit sur would translate as tune or rhythm and
asura means that which is not in sura (tune or rhythm
or alignment) with nature.
What is the dev element? We think of an idea or
we wish to do something. This creative force is the
dev element. However, an element of doubt creates
conict in our minds what if it fails, what if we
incur losses this fear caused due to ignorance is the
asura element. Keeping both these elements in mind
22 45 POWERS OF ALCHEMY
in the contemporary perspective, you can rightly
understand the whole story.
Anything pertaining to the asura element
any conict, fear, negative thoughtis ignorance,
darkness (andhakaar). Agyan (ignorance) and
Andhakaar (darkness) are appropriate synonyms in
Sanskrit. So Andhakasur (the demon of ignorance
or darkness) is always in opposition to Lord Shiva
who is super-consciousness or the highest level of
consciousness. Brahma means the Universal Mind;
the force that creates and runs the whole world; the
force that, in itself, is the Anandmaya Kosha as well
as what exists outside the Anandmaya Kosha. So,
one can say consciousness is the dev element and
ignorance is the asura element.
The war between consciousness and ignorance
goes on within each and every person in the three
koshas the Annamaya, Pranmaya and Manomaya.
This tussle or churning (of war) gives rise to a
system. Whenever there is churning in a project
or work, it is followed by an analysis. Out of that
23 Vastu Purush Mandala
analysis (deliberation), a system comes into effect.
It can have negative as well as positive aspects. The
universal mind termed this phenomenon or system
his manas putra or a part of his own self, the Vastu
Purush.
