Songjiang Hotel

Winning design entry for a five-star resort hotel set within a

beautiful water-filled quarry in the Songjiang district near
Shanghai, China.

The hotel stands two levels higher than the rock face of the
100 metre deep quarry and includes underwater public areas
and guestrooms.

An aquatic theme runs through the design both visually and

functionally. Two underwater levels will house a restaurant
and guestrooms facing a ten-metre deep aquarium. The lowest
level of the hotel will contain a leisure complex with a
swimming pool and water-based sports.

The entire hotel is to be covered in a green roof, while the

building will use geothermal energy for it’s electrical supply
and heating.

the world and the tallest in China. It will
complete the three planned supertall
structures standing next to each other in the
financial district.

The tower will be organised as nine

cylindrical buildings stacked atop each

inner layer. Between that and the outer
layer, nine indoor gardens at different
levels will provide public space for
Shanghai residents. The tower will
feature the world's highest non-enclosed
observation deck.

The design of the glass façade will reduce

wind loads on the building by 24%, meaning less construction
