My path to becoming an artist was an indirect path and a trying one at that. I do not, and have
never, possessed the traditional artistic skills normally required of a student of Art. But my love for
making artwork has always been there, no matter how incapable I may have felt in the contexts of
traditional art classes. In my undergraduate studies I turned to Art History and in doing so I was
able to study, prescribe to, and be a part of artistic philosophies despite my feelings of
inadequacy as an Artist. It was while studying Art History that I realized that Art does not have to
be the craft-driven, technical pursuit that it is taught as in traditional Art and Design schools. I
therefore began searching for schools where concept, material and process were focused upon
heavily. My research lead me to Great Britain where I studied at Sunderland Univeristy in the
North East of England. In our program visiting artists and instructors frequented our studios to join
in group critiques, one on one discussions, and everyday conversation. They did not try to teach
us how to work, they simply let us work and guided our efforts to help us become effective,
professional, and succinct in our practice. My qualifications as a working artist, art historian, and
educator, though essential to this position, I feel are secondary to my experiences within a
student-centered, progressive art program. My willingness to support and inspire diverse
philosophies, learning styles and practices is forefront in my approach to education because
without similar educators I may have never become an artist myself.

RELATIVE EXPERIENCE
Art is unique as a field of study. Unlike Math and Sciences, where there are clearly defined
methods, boundaries and definitions - where advancements in technology and revisions of
theories are normally the extent of any radical variance (there are of course exceptions) - Art is a
field where objectivity is unattainable, right and wrong do not exist, and the very meaning of the
word is ambiguous at best and forever the subject of amendment.
One cannot teach someone how to better their art practice. It is the job of educators like myself to
find within someone’s work characteristics and concepts to build upon. I believe that critiquing
work in an open and honest group setting, where instructors and peers can ask questions and
offer insight, is the most effective way help someone improve their craft, refine their concepts and
focus their intentions. I believe strongly that progress is only made in art through producing work.
It sounds obvious, but it is common among artists to deliberate a problem ad nauseam. In my
experiences producing artwork comes down to problem solving. When one produces work he or
she is forced to make decisions. These decisions, though perhaps not always to the artist’s liking,
are paramount to the process of finding one’s voice, and it is that discovery of one’s own unique,
form of expression - the very means by which they can communicate artistically - that I believe is
the ultimate goal of art education.
