MOBILE PHONES A CURSE OR A BLESSING?
DEFINATION OF KEY WORDS
Mobile phone (also known as a cellular phone, cell phone, and a hand phone) is a device that can
make and receive telephone calls over a radio link whilst moving around a wide geographic area. It
does so by connecting to a cellular network provided by mobile phone operator. Allowing access to
the public telephone network. (en.m.wikipedia.org).
A blessing,( also used to refer to bestowing of such ) is the infusion of something with holiness,
spiritual redemption, Devine, will or ones hope or approval.
A curse(also called execration) is a wish that harm or hurt will be inflicted by any super natural
powers, such as spell, a prayer, an imprecation, an execration, magic, witchcraft, god a natural force
or a spirit.

Brief background
When the first mobile phone was released to the public in 1982, not many caught on to the fade,
mainly because of the outrageous price and a bulkiness of the first model, but times have changed
since then and now this technology is not only a product that sixty percent of the world owns, but it
is something you never leave your house without. The first fully automatic mobile phone system was
called mobile telephone system or commonly known as the M T A. this was developed by the Ericson
company and was commercially released only in Sweden much earlier than one might think;1956.
This was the first system of its kind, but the biggest problem and disadvantage of the prototype was
that phone had a weight of ninety pounds. This became the main reason of why the prototype did
not gain popularity. Later in 1965the M T A evolved into the M T B or better known as the mobile
network.
The first hand held phone was demonstrated by Dr Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1973 using a hand
set weighing around 2.2 pounds (1 kg . in 1983 the dynamic 800x was first to be commercially
available. From 1990to 2011 world wide mobile phone subscriptions grew from 12.4 million to over
5.6 billion, penetrating about 70% of the global population and reaching the bottom of the economic
pyramid.
In addition to telephone, modern mobile also support a wide variety of the other services such as
text messaging, mms, email, internet access, short range wire-less communication (infrared,
Bluetooth), business applications, gaming and photography. Mobile phones that offer these and
more are general computing capabilities are referred as smartphones.

Mobile phones a curse or a blessing?
Arguably, mobile phones have become one of best gifts that humanity has ever received in the 21st
century because of it numerous benefits. It is in fact that that having a mobile phone nowadays is a
sort of a necessity and it is an inevitable truth that the mobile industry is taking everyone by storm.
A mobile phone is device with so many advantages contributing convenient living for both the old
and young generation.
Apart from serving as a great medium in telling lies (i.e. both caller and receiver can be deceived
since one cannot tell where exactly the other person is), there are so many advantages to the user,
this include keeping you in constant with people you consider to be important, help you seek help
immediately during emergency cases, and give a sense of being uplifted in the past, lessen your
boredom, example listening to your favorite music and as well watching videos, movies through
downloading. Also the mobile phones can be used to take wonderful pictures of both happy, sad
moments as well as aiding studies through the use of the internet features on the phone.
But, is everything about mobile phone a blessing?. Recently a division of the world health
organization (WHO) classified cell phones a possible carcinogens this means that through no
definite link has been established between cellphone use and some form of cancer, there is enough
evidence that the group believes more research is needed. Other possible carcinogens according
to WHO include lead, exhaust from gasoline engines, chloroform and coffee. But the report stated
clearly that cell or mobile phones radiation might cause cancer to the human brain. The WHOs
international agency for research on cancer has Thirty one scientists from 14 countries, including the
United States, spent a week poring over existing studies of which they added radio frequency
electromagnetic fields to a long list of "possibly carcinogenic". At the high end of the scale, ionizing,
solar, and ultraviolet radiation were classified as "carcinogenic." Wireless phone radiation falls into
the third five ranked categories. Given the current state of the available evidence, what do you
think? Will you still express contempt to the warnings, or are you worried? Will you change the rules
about your kids cell phone use because of this? What about your cell phone use? Will you limit your
own talking on the cell? One would also prefer to be the new age Doubting Thomas "who will
refuse to believe everything without direct, physical, personal evidence

May be you can consider my advice, though it may be difficult in order not for you to turn the mobile
phone into a killing machine as proven by science. Nevertheless these tips from my views may help
reduce your radiation exposure, if you really prefer to exercise caution; Use a Headset Headsets will
help reduce radiation exposure than from a phone pressed to your ear. Another option is to use your
speakerphone (behind closed doors, please). If using the phone without a headset, wait for the call
to connect before placing the phone next to the ear Text, Don't Talk Text messaging involves less
radiation than does making a phone call. (Just don't text while walking, since bumping your head will
hurt you much more quickly than any wireless radiation might.) now tied mobile phone radiation to
an increased risk of glioma brain tumors.
Turn It off Even if you check your work e-mail at midnight, there's little need to keep your phone
turned on 24/7. (The science may be unclear on mobile phone radiation, but stress and sleep
deprivation clearly harm your health.) Instead of keeping your handset by your pillow for a wake-up
call, use a dedicated alarm clock. No calls when charging allow your phone to charge fully and return
calls later. Better still switch it off before you are tempted to pick when a call comes through whilst
charging.

Why is it called a curse? Some people say that it is a curse because you have to receive calls from
telemarketers while others think that using mobile phones increases the number of accidents. We
cannot deny all these facts but the real curse in using mobile phones is that it causes health
problems. One of the major side effects of mobile phones is that it causes brain cancer. According to
some researches it has appeared that mobile phones emit thermal radiations which are absorbed by
the brain. These radiations weaken the brain tissues which lead to brain cancer and increase in blood
pressure. Moreover, these radiations also put an effect on the eye-sight of the person. Other than
that some researches show that using cell phones builds abnormal cells on human brain. And cure
from these health problems are a long term to cure (by Lixie). (www.best mobiles.com).
.
Conclusion
Indeed mobile phones has contributed immensely to our lives but the blessing and the curse of it
turned out to be in the way it has enable us to live in our virtual community and disciplinary
measures lined ourselves in the usage of it. People are aware of such serious health problems
caused by the use of mobile phone but they are caught up and compelled to use them as life without
this gadget will be a life of old ages. What if we can stop using mobile phones? Can we do this? We
really need to invent such mobile phones which do not cause these health problems. I regard them
as a great blessing, because of the great convenience they bring us. With a mobile phone, you can
speak to a person almost whenever and wherever you want. You can keep in contact with a person
through some simple thumb exercise instead of a complex lettering process. A mobile phone can
also be fashionable and multi-functional.

Mobile Phones, Technology and their Impact on Relationships, Social Movements and Education

Mobile phones and technology have come a long way over the years, peoples lives have become
more demanding and they rely more and more on technology, it has had a big impact on our
everyday life: our relationships, social movements and education. The mobile phone has become
one the most widespread and popular pieces of technology of the past few decades. Worldwide
there are now over 1.7 billion cell phone accounts, 600 million more cell phones services than fixed
lines. (Castells et al. 2007 as cited in Bittman, M, Brown, J, Wajcman, J, 2009) Over the past decade,
the information and communication technologies (ICTs), especially the Internet and mobile
communication, have changed the way people work, play, learn and communicate. (Lee, P, Leung, L,
Venhwei, L, Xiong, C, 2008, p 458). With 3G technology, the mobile phone has become not just a
means of communication but a way to send and receive data, videos, music, access the Internet and
more. The mobile phone has become a necessary part of our everyday life, according to a study
done by Bittman, M et al (2009, p. 232) the mobile phone is primarily a device used for social
connectedness, extending the role of the fixed-line telephone as means of staying in touch with
intimates (family and friends). It has allowed the world to become a smaller place by allowing
people to become connected.

Technology and mobile phone have had a big impact on our relationships, especially family life. The
mobile phone has allowed for more spontaneous and frequent communication between family
members (Lanigan, J, 2009). It allows family members, lovers, and friends to have instant contact
through voice, text messages and email and allows for spontaneous planning of impromptu
meetings and activities. According to Bittman, M et al (2008, p 648) the mobile phone significantly
increases peoples capacity to maintain intimacy at a...

The cell phone is a new invention of the 21st century. It is still a new device in many countries, but in
my country it has a long history. People do not leave their homes without their cell phones. For
many people, it's a convenient way to communicate. Many parents provide their children with cell
phones for safety reasons. For me, it is difficult to live without my cell phone. Cell phones have three
principal advantages. The cell phone has made communication easier. In addition, cell phones
provide their users with extra devices in addition to telephone. At last, cell phones can provide
safety for their users.

Cell phones have become popular in the last fifteen years because they have made communication
easier. People can call each other no matter where they are. Fifteen years ago, there was no way to
call someone who had no access to a conventional telephone. For example, one of my friends is a
taxi driver. Before he got his cell phone, there was no way to contact him while he was at work, but
since he bought one, his family is able to call him in case of emergency or whenever they need him.
However, he believes his work has become easier since he got a cell phone because he does not
have to use telephone booths to call his family and his parents can call him anytime.

In addition, the technology which is provided with cell phones has made life easier. Cell phones are
not only telephones; they can also incorporate cameras, calendars, alarm clocks, and other devices
to make life easier. The latest cell phones can even be used as a pocket computer. Cell phone users
can connect to the Internet and check their email. For instance, since I got my new cell phone, I do
not have to carry my laptop with me, and instead, I can use my cell phone. I can chat with friends,
send email, and write notes; records lectures, and even download files from the Internet.

Last but not least, many parents provide their children with cell phones for safety reasons. The
speed dial up option in cell phones lets people contact emergency numbers by pressing one button.
For example, my younger sister has had a cell phone since she was nine years old. If she runs into
any problems, she can easily contact my parents. Likewise, my parents can call her if they need to
talk to her. For many parents, a cell phone is a convenient way to contact their children.

In conclusion, for many people, cell phones have become an important part of daily life. The ability
to communicate with a cell phone, along with its other features has made life easier. However, cell
phones can harm their user's health. Long term use of cell phones can damage hearing and cause
certain types of cancer. I think people should only use their cell phones in cases of emergency

The Disadvantages of Mobile Phones
Every coin has two faces. Same goes with the mobile technology. It has numerous
advantages but it also brings with it some disadvantages.
Effect on Health
One of it is the radiations of mobile phones that are causing serious health hazards to the
users. The mobile phone users are more prone to brain tumors, ear defects, headaches and
blurring of vision. The mobile phones use microwave radiations to transmit data or more
clearly they use these radiations to connect. For this base stations are to be installed in
various parts of the city so that effective coverage can be given to the users.
These microwaves lead to serious health problems. it can cause the damage to the DNA, a
causative factor for mutation in species, eye vision getting blurred and eye cancer, infertility,
hyperactivity in new born children and different type of damages to the ear and tympanic
membrane which can cause hearing defects in the individuals who excessively use mobile.
Addiction in teenagers
Due to low priced services in the form of postpaid and prepaid the teenagers can easily avail
mobile telephony. Here the benefits get converted to disadvantages when the device is over
used every time and at every place. The teenagers are talking of the services, giving and
receiving text messages; downloading wallpapers and ringtones and playing games. They
by this way get detached with the other important activities which are so important for their
social and personality development.
No personal life
You keep it with you all the time and everywhere. You take it with you in an important
meeting. You are discussing an important aspect of the budget for approval. At this point the
mobile beeps and you get distracted from the important thing that you were discussing. Take
another situation. You are on a vacation and relaxing on beach. Just then the mobile
vibrates and when you receive the call it is just another sales advertisement by the service
company.
