TECHNOLOGY, DEVELOPMENT, ETHICS AND CULTURE

ABSTRACT
From the time immemorial Man is using technology. Every invention & discovery aided by thirst for betterment,
took him towards development. But its time to check the dimension of development (which is killing than thrilling).
Human race is facing irreparable loss of ecology, ethics & culture. The individualism is not much bothered about collective
welfare or advancement. The concept of universal brotherhood is becoming fragile & is evident from many case studies.
We need to grow with the technology. (Ethically, morally as well as culturally.) The cross cutting culture can only save the
universe. Overlapping in every sense is a sign of ruin for human race. Very soon it will eclipse the Human civilization.
Learning from the past, acting sensibly and proactively is the only solution. Then only sustainable development can take a
effortless breath.

INTRODUCTION
World has a long tradition of science & technology from the ancient times. There is no revolution without
evolution of mankind. Mankinds thirst for progressiveness will never end. But the question crops in mind, what is
Progress? It has to be only material one? The Science & technology is making our life easy. (which was never before)
The invention of wheel, fire has revolutionized the entire human race. Communication, Transport, Technological &
Structural developments paved the way for further advancement (Apps, Software, robotics, Nano technology etc. has
changed the face of entire universe.) Due to unaccountable & irresponsible use of resources & technology the Human race
is in trouble, Sustainable development is just on paper. The Kyoto & many more protocols failed in actual sense. If not so
then why we are facing the drastic climatic changes which were never before. (Intensity of disasters are more, the threat
continues to haunt us.)
Mac Dougal in his work, Ethice - A Modern world problem says, what individual feel as good or bad should not
be called as Religion. He concludes, the subject of Religion should not be in the hands of individual. Today, the concept
of collective responsibility for betterment, morality needs to be galvanized. The theory of individualism has failed to give
an alternative for the world.
Chesterton says, The cultural / civilization which gives preference to individual where individuals liking are
given special priority / thought the degradation of such society is certain.

The new science, technology, innovations, discoveries, are done & will be continued. But science itself do not
have value judgment. The Research, new technique is silent about the aim of use (here the meaning is ethics, morality) like
nuclear science. (it was a miracle, but used for disaster, evidence is of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, (Japan), generations faced
the trouble. ) So the blame does not comes on science but on us i.e. on The users. Cyber is good, but what about the
cybercrimes? (generation is spoilt and who should be blamed for that?) Its like a knife. How to use it is a decisive
factor, to cut /chop a vegetable or neck? Science will not tell you that. So science, development, human being, his/her
behavior, social issues must be studied, analyzed in a holistic manner. As science & human being both are the components
which affect each other.
We had seen the progress of basic science, Archaeology (which gives the basic thought on civilization.) as well as
the growth & development of technology. But the basic question remains the same if the user / a human race is not
understanding its responsibility, the so called evolution, progress everything would be in vain. And again fall of
civilization, Cultural pattern will have a cycle i.e we will also be a part of history. If we dont use the resources
meticulously, with accountability, we are bound to end, if anything remains it would be the worst condition to live for our
future generations. Just finding a new application wont work, what we can do of scrap will be a decisive factor in the era of
sustainable development.
Today, we talk about the environment, ecological balance, conservation of water, energy resources,
Cyber security, Bio-safety & Bioethics. But all those areas need a Ethical & Moral background. Otherwise the downfall of
human race is unavoidable! Just not for academic interest but in actual sense the higher moral & ethical graph can only
save the so called hi-tech, smart users of technology, from the degradation. Question remains unanswered where we are
moving towards with all these advancements?(the word advancement needs to be redefined) What we want to achieve?
Technology, emerging trends are needed, are worth when its with Morality and ethics. Otherwise its creating moral
degradation, will create worst condition. We are not machines, so must think and act in proactive way rather than reactive.
Also the work culture is disturbing the socio-psychological pattern.( nuclear and breaking family structure is making life,
human society more fragile.)
Science & Technology do their own job. But the World Community, the Governments of each country must think
with sensitivity for the use of new innovations and the sustainable ways. But even governments & World Community lack
to accommodate the wants & dreams of people. (As the cultures are diversified, also the socio- eco psycho levels
differ.)The events in Persian Gulf demonstrated, warring countries pay little heed to ethics or rules. The terror of so called
saviors of democracy is creating havoc, is ruining the notion of welfare and development. Its high time to learn and adopt
the lesson for betterment of everyone. Technology must be for race, for its development in actual sense and not a cause of
its decline!
CONCLUSIONS
Selfishness is at the bottom of civilization.
