WELCOME | 05
Editors
January is ofen a month for austerity and restraint as
we try and live up to the ambitious goals we set ourselves
for the next 12 months (not to mention recover from the
tinsel-strewn, alcohol-soaked excesses of the month
before). In the absence of conspicuous consumption, we
resort to simpler pleasures to provide a welcome respite
from the cold dark weeks at the beginning of the year. A
long hot soak can be particularly comforting and, as we
all know, the idea of bathroom as an indulgent retreat
has really taken hold in recent years. But rather than
austere temples of hygiene and sleek minimalism, the
trend for many bathroom products has been towards
luxury featuring the kind of materials and nishes that
have been absent from bathrooms in recent years. Step
forward fabrics in deep rich tones, statement furniture
pieces, interesting textured surfaces and bold paterned
nishes which add real personality to a bathroom
scheme. Technology has again come to the designers
rescue and provided new materials that are able to
withstand constant heat and moisture. This months
bathroom focus brings you up to speed with ideas and
advice for turning your bathroom into a decadent haven
of wellbeing as well as information about the latest loos
and fancy new furniture for bathrooms. And, of course,
we wish you all a happy and successful New Year!

extra exciting this year is
Paris Deco Off, a late night
event where many of the

opening their doors up until
midnight to show their new

SMART TECHNOLOGY COMES
HOME
Following the Government plans to
introduce smart metering into all UK
homes, BEAMA (the Electrotechnical
Manufacturing Association) has
welcomed two new documents explaining
what they mean for the future. Named
Towards a Smarter Future and Smarter
Grids: The Opportunity, the documents
discuss the forthcoming developments for
smart grids and smart housing. Dr
Howard Porter, (left), chief operating
officer for BEAMA, said Industry is
ready to swing into action to help the
Government deliver this ground breaking
initiative. Smart technology promises to
have increasing affect on the domestic
market, with homes and energy suppliers
becoming more efficient with
personalised energy management.

FIRAs much-awaited competitiveness report will be launched early next
month. Last published in 2002, the report will assess the health of the UK
furniture industry at the end of 2009. The report will refer to an in-depth
analysis of the furniture industry to propose actions and strategies that
aim to underpin the future success of individual organisations and
Furniture UK. Many agree that UK furniture manufacturing has
become increasingly challenged - output value is declining, profit
margins are being squeezed, imports account for almost half of the
market and exports are minimal. Despite these gloomy statistics FIRA
contends that UK furniture manufacturing has a future. Product quality
and service have improved and, more than at any time over the last
decade, retailers and specifiers appear to be more disposed to buying
British, from companies like Benchmark (above). Furniture manufacture
contributes almost 9 billion per year to the countrys GDP. www.fira.co.uk

DRINKING PARTNERS
When it comes to devising
new interiors products, design
collaboration for many companies
means commissioning a big-name
designer. For German kitchen
manufacturer bulthaup, however,
its latest collaboration is a
strategic alliance with two other
leading brands, appliances
company Gaggenau and Danish
wood flooring specialist Dinesen.
The three have created the
bulthaup/Gaggenau Wine Cellar, a
space conceived for the enjoyment
of wine. It is constructed from
Dinesen timber and contains
bulthaup b3 furniture and
Gaggenau wine storage equipment.
The companies claim it is a
perfect framework for a multi-
dimensional, sensual experience.
AWine Cellar will be on display
in bulthaups Clerkenwell
showroom from September.
At the launch event in Berlin,
the wine cellar concept was
introduced against the backdrop of
the changing domestic landscape.
A presentation fromthe Future
Laboratory, a UKtrends
consultancy, set the scene for
Homestead 3.0, a blueprint for
homes in the second decade of the
21st century, where technological
advances sit alongside a revived
sense of tradition. A more cynical
observer might suggest that
research commissioned by these
companies is unlikely to challenge
the idea of the kitchen as the heart
of the home. And most residential
design professionals would
recognize the ideas as a
consolidation of recent trends.
Attention has increasingly
focused on kitchens in recent
decades and expenditure has risen,
not only because more options are
available but because those who
can afford to are turning their
kitchens into a statement.
According to bulthaup: Cooking
has increasingly become a symbol
of social affluence.
Is the bulthaup/Gaggenau Wine
Cellar a clever response to the
recession old products presented
in newways? Or is this about
brands finding creative ways to
work together to reach the same
audience? The role of marketing in
setting trends was not discussed at
the Berlin event but the media have
certainly raised public awareness of
interiors and driven consumption.
But if the wine cellar concept is
not enough to whet the appetite,
British architect John Pawson,
known for his pared-back
aesthetic, is working on a range of
products for bulthaup, which
should appear in 2012.

together. This year they are already
planning shows for both Interiors
Birmingham (at the end of this month)
and Milan (at the end of April).
The two met as students in
Oxfordshire (at Rycotewood college in
Thame) on a one-year furniture making
course. Piers then stayed on and ran a
workshop while Rory returned to London
and signed up for a BA at the London
School of Furniture (now London Met).
Although the pair are clearly fascinated
by creativity, their education made them
realize that they were both more drawn
to playing a part in facilitating creation.
I realized I would rather work with
people doing more interesting stuff than
me, says Roberts, in characteristically
self-effacing style. While Dodd admits:
There [at the London School of
Furniture] I got less interested in making
things and more interested in what
happened to the things that other people
made and the ideas behind those things.
Roberts background in economics and
industrial relations also played a part in
shaping the ideas that inform their work:
Markets need other ways of thinking,
he explains. and there was not much
choice but to do it for ourselves.
The first events were 12 years ago and
Though they may not look it (no
mutton chop whiskers or fancy
waistcoats), Rory Dodd and business
partner Piers Roberts seem rather like
the 21st century equivalent of a pair of
Victorian impresarios. Not the kind that
took advantage of vulnerable bearded
ladies but more the kind that recognized
and nurtured talent to bring real
originality to a wider and appreciative
public. Dodd and Roberts are the names
behind Designersblock and are both
collaborators and facilitators par
excellence.
Based, for now at least, in an old pub
nestled between the Geffrye Museum
and the new East London line extension,
the East End location and slightly
haphazard surroundings reflect their
creative and unstructured approach to
business. Not for them the sleek
minimalism of airconditioned designer
offices or an equally sleek receptionist.
But dont be fooled into thinking that
their thinking is also chaotic. Both have
a very clear sense of where the business
of design is at in 21st century Britain
and how they can act as catalysts to
bring all different kinds of people

many new design talents to the attention of a wider public.

etc, all outdoors. Dodd will be joined in
the woods by as many as ten other
designers including Matthew Hilton and
Gitta Gschwendtner.
Before then, at the end of this month,
Designersblock will be setting its stall in
Birminghams NEC with a theme of
collaboration and showing products
created by pairing designers with
established manufacturers. Participants
include Puff & Flock, Sophie Hedderwick,
Ercol and Timorous Beasties.
After 12 years of curating these
events, both Dodd and Roberts are as
committed, if not more so, to
Designersblock. Our aim is to
encourage dialogue and creativity
between different groups in a way that is
inspiring and that works, says Dodd.
The recession is very good for us we
need better ideas, more trust, something
substantial. I dont think people realize
were not as passive as other shows. Peer
group learning is the most important
kind, echoes Roberts. Its far more
relevant than any business course. Our
gatherings have been recognized as
having enormous power they create
meeting points, engender excitement and
create opportunities to engage.
www.verydesignersblock.com
since then Designersblock has organised
shows around the world (45 events in 13
cities in ten countries including Japan
and the US as well as a regular presence
in Milan at the time of the furniture
fair). A key part of a Designersblock
event is working with building owners to
effectively utilise transitional
architectural spaces which have
included Londons Truman brewery and
St Pancras station. This year in Milan
will be their tenth in the city and their
second in the Isola district where, as well
as showing at the Revel showroom on via
Thaan De Revel, they are managing 17
different locations of varying sizes which
will be used for shows, presentations,
lectures and parties. A particular
highlight looks like being Bodging
Milano, an idea which, Dodd explains I
cooked up with designer Chris Eckersley.
It came about through a shared
fascination with English regional
furniture and vernacular design, the
upshot of this is that in March we will go
to the woods in Hereford for a week of
chair bodging - no electricity, pole lathes

Or

match?
The creation of a breathtaking kitchen can descend into a
battle between the egos of the kitchen designer and interior
designer. We pinpoint the divisive issues and reveal how to
resolve them to achieve a superb result and a happy client
WORDS LINDA CLAYTON
Kitchen materials and technology
advance so quickly that keeping up to date
with the latest developments is a full-time
occupation. Since interior designers usually
work on every room in a home, it makes
increasing sense for them to tap the
knowledge of a kitchen specialist to ensure no
tricks are missed in the pursuit of a finely
tuned modern kitchen.
Kitchens are much more complicated than
they used to be, says Philip Heaton, a bespoke
kitchen designer who recently completed a
project with Goodchild Interiors. A kitchen is
no longer a series of cupboards and drawers,
there are so many more pull-out mechanisms
and gadgets to incorporate. Interior designer
Paul Goodchild concurs, listing the wine
coolers, coffee machines and steam ovens
that clients now expect as standard.
Interior designers may well know their
Poggenpohl from their Gaggenau (and even be
able to pronounce them) but do they
appreciate the millimetre precision required to
ensure a fully integrated dishwasher wont
chafe on a plinth, the ventilation needs of a
built-in larder fridge or what the next best
alternatives are if a range cooker is out of
budget? Some do, certainly, but with heads
brimming with bathroom schemes, dining
room decor, fabric selections and spatial
design that often includes substantial
architectural amends, a little delegation to the
kitchen experts may be a good idea.
In any project, it is always a benefit to
work closely and take advice from those who
are specialists in certain areas. A good kitchen

experts at Poggenpohl and Gaggenau to achieve a very
hi-tech galley-style kitchen with all mod cons in a heavily
restricted listed building in London

KITCHENS | 29

adding that many kitchen specialists now
have workshops overseas, which makes any
inspection of the units almost impossible.
Other bugbears for interior designers
include kitchen designers with a competitive
attitude that works to the detriment of the
project (according to Joanna Wood), kitchen
designers who do not appreciate design details
that unify spaces and instead view the
kitchen in isolation (according to Gill
Richardson) and impatient kitchen designers
who do not appreciate why a design may
require 20 revisions to reach perfection
(according to Louise Bradley).
But there are two sides to the argument.

While many kitchen designers can

function as interior kitchen designers
when they work directly with a client,
when working with an interior designer the
kitchen designer must take a back seat in
terms of design and instead function as a
space designer and a supporting act for the
interior designer. Laurence Pidgeon,
kitchen designer, Alternative Plans

Be clear at the outset about what each

partys responsibilities are and respect
each others views and skills.
Gail Taylor, interior designer, Taylor Howes

Preparation is key. Avoid last-minute

changes as this affects (and can annoy)
everyone. Have a well prepared and well
thought-out design and try to keep to it.
Paul OBrien, kitchen designer, Kitchens
International

Never forget that the client is the

ultimate judge of our combined efforts. It
would be easy to surgically carve up the
responsibilities into planning and aesthetics
but the outcome is always better when the two
disciplines work as a team. Joanna Wood,
interior designer, Joanna Trading
designer understands the products and so can
advise how to achieve the best result in the
space given, says Beverley Spyer-Holmes of
Beverley Hills Interiors, which works with
Clive Christian. Indeed, judging by the results
of recent collaborations between interior and
kitchen designers, theres a strong argument
for making skill-sharing compulsory.
Understanding the minutiae of kitchen
planning, design and construction is very
much the full-time occupation of kitchen
designers who work in dedicated studios or
workshops. So why do interior designers still
balk at the idea of handing over, or at least
sharing, the kitchen reins?
More often than not, kitchen designers
wont think outside of box and I mean
this literally, bemoans interior designer Jilly
Harris at Colorati Interiors. They are often a
slave to their CAD program and finding the
easiest option of dropping boxes into spaces
so the computer visuals look pretty.
Kate Letteriello of Artspace Interiors
thinks there is nothing worse than working
with an individual who has a no can do
attitude and is closed to new ideas. This is
normally because they dislike the idea of
taking any direction from an interior designer,
which can be disabling to a project, she says.
It seems irritations most often occur when
interior designers feel their expertise is being
overlooked. Kitchen designers often answer
directly to the client and any amount of
persuading on finish or schedule can fall on
deaf ears, says architectural and interior
designer Anita Kohn of Living in Space,

3 Although Living in Space will head to
kitchen studios when clients request
designer brands, the company has its own
in-house workshops that can produce
elegant kitchens at a third of the cost
4 Kitchens International consulted an

seamlessly into the open-plan living space

January 2010 | w.idfxmagazine.com
Kitchen designers accuse interior designers of
putting their own tastes and concepts ahead
of those of their clients. They dont listen to
their clients. Too often, interior designers are
concerned more with their own ideas about
design than reflecting the tastes and
requirements of the client, grumbles Mike
Taylor of Kitchens by Mike Taylor.
Interior designers sometimes think they
know best and sometimes force their taste on
a concept, rather than taking account of what
the client wants or what is practical, agrees
Andrew Crowe, designer at Bulthaup Mayfair.
One of the biggest irritations for kitchen
designers is that interior designers dont
always make budget a priority and come up
with wonderfully exotic designs that just
dont work on paper. They dont always think
through the cost and installation
consequences of changing a design. For
example, specifying a 35mm thickness instead
of a standard size will obviously affect lead
time and costs, explains Philip Heaton.
Interior designer Gail Taylor of Taylor
Howes began her career as a kitchen designer.
She believes each party should avoid making
generalisations about the other and must not
let a bad experience cloud their opinion of all
interior designers or kitchen designers.
Having been both, its important to remember
that, as in every industry, there are good and
bad designers, she says. As a kitchen
designer, I had my favourite interior designer
who really understood space and could see my
vision for the area, adding their expertise to
really enhance it. Taylor adds that as an
interior designer, she has whittled down her
contacts book and only uses the very best
kitchen designers. They can visualise the
whole area and how it will flow. They do not
just try to sell the most expensive options.
When talented interior designers and
kitchen designers come together in perfect
harmony, the results are nothing short of
magical. In fact, in a society of homeowners
hell-bent on opening up their kitchens to
create large living spaces, the need to marry
skills is becoming essential.
Furthermore, when relationships
synchronize, the willingness of each party to
go above and beyond normal services
increases. While most kitchen designers say
they afford the general public the same
privileges as interior designers, the promise of
repeat business affects service levels. It is a
magic moment when an interior designer, who
you have worked with before, walks into the
showroom with a new client it means they
were happy with the previous design and
working relationship, enthuses Laurence
Pidgeon, director of Alternative Plans.
By building bridges and appreciating the
particular skills each designer brings to the
table, the potential for kitchens to be both
technically sound and imbued with
personality and character knows no bounds.
The kitchen designer must allow the interior
designer to be involved in the design side as
much as they wish and the interior
designer must listen to all the pros and cons
regarding any technical objects. They must
work as a team, Charlotte Crosland insists.
By putting egos to bed and working
together towards achieving a common goal,
the client can enjoy the best of both worlds
and one happy client means more happy
clients will follow, which will enable both
kitchen and interior designer to live happily
ever after. The end.

BATHROOM FOCUS | 39

Forget clean lines, crisp white
sanitaryware and sleek chrome, this years
bathrooms are all about glamour. Were talking
full-on Hollywood style luxurious crystal,
acres of marble, exotic, unexpected materials
and sparkle. Lots of sparkle. This is not to be
confused with gaudy, over-the-top glam
sorry, but Russian or Middle-Eastern bathroom
decor isnt the next big thing. Instead, the
glamour train stops just shy of oligarch, instead
taking its style cues from the sophistication of
the Orient Express. Modern bathroom glamour
is about experimenting with texture and using
interesting finishes such as rough stone, velvet
and metals combined with extravagant
accessories. In short, these are indulgent
bathrooms reminiscent of boutique hotels, says
Gail Taylor, design director at Taylor Howes.
In the past year there has been an explosion
of glitz on the bathroom scene. It started, as you
would expect, with the big-name design
darlings. Few visitors will forget Marco Pivas
gold-infused DLuxhotel stand for Gessi at the
2008 Milan Furniture Fair, nor Marcel
Wanders sparkling Aqua Jewels brassware for
Bonomi in the same year, not to mention Sieger
Designs eye-catching champagne finishes at
ISH 2009. The use of luxe materials is now
filtering down to more mainstream production
and demand for decadent furniture, brassware,
sanitaryware, wall coverings and accessories is
soaring. The trend for more decadent
bathrooms stems from the fact that people are
using certain rooms in the house to provide a
glamorous and perhaps comforting shelter from
the recent harsh climate outside the home
environment, says Steven Salt, showroom
manager at Boffi Chelsea.
The bathroom being the smallest room in
the house is a great candidate for a hearty
dose of glamour because this look is clearly not
cheap to achieve. Brassware finished in 22ct
gold is never going to be stocked by Ikea but
restricting such luxury to a small area like the
bathroom helps to keep budgets sensible.
01 Helen Bygraves, joint managing director of Hill House Interiors, is a big fan of high-glamour bathrooms and
tends go for deliciously textured wallpapers that incorporate crushed stone or beading. This bathroom has Quartz
wallpaper by Brian Yates. 02 Silvia Stanzani is the designer behind GranitiFiandres Xtra Gold tiles, which boast a
gold relief-textured pattern that stands out against matt 60cm

Many designers recommend blowing the
budget on a key statement piece in the most
lavish materials available. The most important
piece of the bathroom to get right is the vanity
it defines the whole room. Make this
gorgeous and well thought out and the rest of
the room will follow, says Gretchen Trusted,
founder of Shake the Sky. Fortunately, sourcing
a lavish vanity is not difficult. Check out the
mirrored glass Barbara Barry Glamour
collection at West One Bathrooms, CP Harts
copper, star anise and conker-clad Hoxton
vanities or the luscious lacquers of Diva by
Burgbad. Fresh fromCersaie, Alchemy Design
Award has taken stock of Oasiss Pasha
vanity range, which includes furniture with
hand-applied gold leaf and opal inset mirrors,
while Milldues Majestic bevelled black glass
vanities continue to command attention with
their undiluted opulence.
While grand-scale glamour is undoubtedly
enhanced by grand-scale architecture, the look
is certainly possible to achieve in bijou
bathrooms. There is no reason not to bring
glamour or decadence into smaller bathrooms
or cloakrooms, says Sean Cochrane, director of
Cochrane Design. In a recent project, we were
lucky enough to have tall ceilings, which
allowed me to incorporate an extra tall
upholstered door, panelled walls and a
chandelier within only 2m
2
of floor space. Its
amazing how much colour and design small
places can handle. Clearly mirrors are essential
in any small bathroom and bevelled glass or
ornately framed mirrors are the way forward.
Using antique glass will add a period touch (try
Mirrorworks, which offers a resilvering and
bevelling service) while cladding walls in
framed mirrored panels is pure art deco.
The key to pulling off a truly extravagant
bathroom has got to be the use of unexpected
materials and products. According to Cheryl
Gurner, director of Bathrooms International,
onyx is going to be a big material for bathrooms
in 2010, particularly given that it can be back
lit so magnificently. Gurner also advocates the
use of outsized chandeliers over a statement
bath. Indeed, items more typically associated
with living rooms or bedrooms are creeping into
the bathroom more and more, with increasing

04 Piero Fornasettis Adam and Eve plates provide the perfect backdrop in this grand bathroom, which
features Drummonds splendid freestanding Spittal shower, inspired by a classic design from the 1920s.
05 Alchemy Design Award has introduced Oasiss Pasha collection of decadent vanity units and mirrors, including
this opulent number finished in hand-applied gold leaf with a multi-faceted basin in resin and an opal-framed mirror.
06 Glamour doesnt have to come at the cost of minimalism. Dornbrachts sleek-lined Supernova range by
Sieger Design comes in a champagne finish made from 22ct gold. 07 Samuel Heath has added a luxurious
twist to its classic Fairfield range with a stunning, cut-crystal lever tap design, made in collaboration with Dartington

requests for upholstered chairs, swag curtains
and even a sofa or two. In a recent project in
Notting Hill, Soanes Christopher Hodsoll was
asked to include a full-sized antique wardrobe,
sofa and coffee table, with the bath almost
becoming sidelined in the clients desire to
chill out after bathing. In this situation, the
importance of decent ventilation an air
conditioning system if possible shouldnt be
ignored and it pays to choose fabric wisely. For
example, Hodsoll had removable towelling
covers made for his clients sofa but there are
also more decorative fabrics that are better
suited to moisture-prone areas. Avoid silk
because it does not react well with water.
On walls, beautifully book-matched Carrara
marble adds instant drama but dont ignore
tiles altogether. The recent trend for wallpaper-
inspired tiling, such as Villeroy & Bochs New
Glory range and British Ceramic Tiles
Chambray Brocade collection, are pushing the
boundaries of tile design. Original Style stocks
gold-clad mosaics, while Maybury Homes real
mother-of-pearl tiles are beautifully elegant.
Wallpaper is also making headlines in the
bathroom and, as long as the room is well
ventilated and the paper does not come into
direct contact with water, it is not as
impractical as you might imagine. Vinyl
wallcoverings are a good option for bathrooms
as they have a washable finish. However,
application is just as important as the correct
specification. Mould-resistant adhesives must
be used in this environment, says Neil Ogilvie,
national president of the Painting and
Decorating Association.
Now that fewer people are renovating with a
view to selling up, we can afford to indulge a
little personal taste and even a touch of whimsy.
The new glamour trend is certainly appealing.
Who can blame us for getting excited at the
realisation that we can have gold taps, etched
glass, mother of pearl or onyx finishes without
the fear of putting off potential buyers?
Luxury for most of us may not be very
affordable at the moment but a decadent
bathroom can provide a wonderful spot to
escape to, enthuses Jenny Gibbs, Principal at
KLC School of Design and Vice-President of the
British Institute of Interior Design.
08 Ahead of the glamour game, Marco Piva created this luxury suite at Gessis DLuxhotel stand at the
Milan Furniture Fair in 2008 using Gessis Mimi brassware and accessories in gold. 09 Inspired by the shape
of ancient Asian tribal drums, the Kamala Vessels basin from Kohler has a tumbled bronze finish and is decorated
with a pattern of dots, ridges and scrolls. 10 A bespoke moulded-plaster wall, polished serrpegiante marble-
topped bath, Murano glass lighting and Lalique crystal fittings all combine to create an elegantly feminine bathroom
for Candy & Candys Monte Carlo-based clients.

January 2010 | w.idfxmagazine.com
A good bathroom is a well-ventilated bathroom.
Entering a bathroom full of the fug of someone
elses bath or shower is not a good start to what,
we are frequently told, should be a therapeutic
experience. Aside from the irritation of
steamed-up mirrors, damp and condensation
on surfaces can create a slip hazard. The
problem of excessive moisture is further
complicated when delicate materials are
specified. Whether this means plastered or
painted surfaces, delicate ceramic surfaces or
the use of textiles on floors or walls, architects
and designers should obviously take care to
ensure that the surfaces are able to withstand
particularly humid air. And they should make
sure that clients looking to use sensitive
materials in schemes are aware of the
importance of ventilation as a daily
responsibility (rather than suffering the
consequences of expensive remedial action).
Many materials are now being brought to the
market whose moisture resistance has been
intrinsically improved to add to the moisture-
tolerant materials that already exist. A number
of lighting companies have recently launched
IP-44 rated products that have been specifically
designed for the bathroom and it is easy to see
that designers have relished the opportunity to
introduce more glamorous pieces for the first
time, confident that the products are now as
safe as they are sexy.
Ventilation is particularly important in light
of the recent trend to bring the bath into the
bedroom, as in the Italian apartment featured
on the cover of this Focus section and the
London apartment featured in Portfolio 2 (p.78)
where there is a bath and a steam cabinet
adjoining the master bedroom. A wooden floor
has been used in this project but the client will
need to be careful to keep the bed linen as well
as the bedroom itself well-aired in an
environment that is likely to be above average
humidity. Part F of the Building Regs (2000) is
of course, the standard point of reference for
ventilation for architects and designers.
Installing an extractor fan is a basic
requirement, particularly if the bathroom has
no external ventilation (window, skylight, etc.).
It pays to buy an extractor with a backdraught
shutter (so air from the bathroom blows out but
wind from outside doesnt blow in), and that
should the bathroom not have windows the
extractor should have a 15 minute run-on timer.
Fans can be installed to come on automatically
when the light is turned on but they can also
have separate controls. Models with humidity
sensors might be good for families with small
children who cannot be relied upon to be damp-
conscious.

SPANISH TILE INNOVATION Luxury is one
of the strongest trends in contemporary
bathroom design and stunning tiles are often the
focal point. Spains long tradition in ceramics,
combined with continuing investment in
technological innovation means designers now
have every possible solution at their disposal for
creating stunning bathrooms to satisfy even the
most demanding client.
As the bathroom has become as a design
space in its own right, the tile industry has
evolved creating an increased demand for more
decorative and cutting edge designs. The
contemporary bathroom now serves more than
its traditional function and has become a space
for relaxation and experimentation in terms of
design. Simplistic minimalism has given way to
embellishment and enhancement, with tactile
materials, distinctive finishes and colour
replacing the clean edges and white-on-white
trend of yesteryear. Committed to cultivating
high precision techniques and inspirational new
concepts for the bathroom, Spanish tile
manufacturers are leading the way in the tile
industry and demonstrating their ability to
produce diverse and imaginative collections.
AZTECAWith over 45 years of experience
manufacturing high quality ceramic floor and wall
tiles, Azteca has developed a huge portfolio of
tile concepts. The very latest tile collection from
Azteca plays around with alternative material
effects and tactile surfaces and includes marble
and slate imitation tiles, decorative mosaics and
coloured glass tiles. Committed to providing
detailed product specifications for trade
professionals, Azteca has also implemented a
dedicated interior design department to ensure
that the product offering is accompanied by a
supportive service offer.
AztecasTresor range offers an eclectic and
elegant look; the series has been designed to
cover walls with a classic design which was
created using a modern manufacturing
technique - digitally decorated white cement.
KERABEN As the bathroom tile industry has
moved away from clean lines and surfaces to
more visual aesthetics, Tile of Spain member
Keraben has introduced a whole wealth of
stylish metallic pieces and tiles featuring ornate
motifs. The Almafi collection was designed to
create a streamlined and textured look and is
perfect for creating a smart contemporary
backdrop for contemporary sanitaryware.
Kerabens City design features a subtle floral
pattern for walls, with an organic flowing pattern
which provides a striking contrast when
combined with a minimalist basin with straight
contours and simplistic styling.
GRESPANIA The use of warmth and texture
in the bathroom has become a more dominant
trend, particularly as luxury hotels and spas
have begun to shape the interior design industry
more and more. The move towards comfort and
indulgence combined with cutting edge design,
has led to an influx of decorative new styles and
materials. Leading Spanish manufacturer
Grespania has responded to this trend with the
launch of stylish new tile collections which lend
themselves especially well to sophisticated
bathroom sanctuaries. The broad range of
materials and tones within Grespanias
collection indicate a shift towards textured and
embellished surfaces, which offer real scope for
designers looking to create a show-stopping
scheme. The Orinoco range from Grespania
includes a diverse selection of surface finishes,
including natural stone effect tiles called
Orinoco Marrn and Orinoco Azul which add a
real visual impact and expertly replicate the
elegance of a high specification hotel bathroom.
The intricate detailing within the Orinoco
designs is perfectly complemented by
Grespanias Parana mosaic tile which is
distinguished by iridescent tones that reflect the
light once on the wall. The Maracaibo tile design
from Grespania continues the floral motif trend,
adding a creative edge to designer bathrooms
or ornate feature walls.
ANTI-SLIP TILES As bathroom floors are
often high traffic areas and designed
especifically for bare feet, it is essential to
use a non-slip* material in order to create a
safe environment and minimise the risk of
accidental falls.
The Spanish ceramic tile industry has
invested heavily in researching this area of
the market, which has enabled
manufacturers to develop different methods
to ensure that it is possible to produce
ceramic floor tiles which are slip-resistant
without compromising on aesthetic element
of the design process. Relief can be added
to the surface of a tile through lines and
grooves; this generates variable surface
depths in to create added friction
opportunities, and also enables liquids to
drain easily and reduces residue build up.
Microscopic cavities can also be created on
a tiles surface using a powerful laser which
allows the aesthetic characteristics of the
design to remain intact. This increases the
slip resistance qualities and is also highly
beneficial to trade professionals who can
then select from a wide range of series,
colours, motifs and finishes without
compromising on safety.
*No tiles are 100% non-slip. This phrase is to
be taken as low slip risk.

couple of options. They can either have a shower
pump fitted to pump the water at a higher
pressure or they can have the cold water feed
connected directly to the mains and have a
combination boiler or unvented cylinder fitted to
supply hot water at high pressure.
Francis often specifies European brands, like
Dornbracht, Vola and Hansgrohe, and as a result
is familiar with the process. I have worked on
many projects where the client wanted fittings
that required 3 bar pressure such as large
overhead showers, and so have overseen the
upgrading of many a British system!
In recent years many traditional British tap
companies, such as Barber Wilson and Samuel
Heath have also started manufacturing their
taps to work with either lowor high pressure as
householders are opting to have combination
boilers and unvented cylinders fitted to increase
their water pressure.
David Hughes also points out a final and
perhaps the most comforting point, If its all
starting too sound far too technical, while all
these suggestions are made to our customers,
who are mainly designers, they should not be
too concerned with the connections and
pressure. It is the plumber who should be
coming up with the answer. Of course its good
to armyourself with the knowledge you may
need, but good tradesman can often come up
with a solution.
When specifying beautiful high-end
bathroom products fromEurope and beyond
for UK projects, designers may be tempted to
stick what they know, rather than risk possible
differences with plumbing and piping
standards. We asked a bathroomcompany and
designer to get the low-down on howto mix the
continental product fromthe clients wishlist
with the good old British plumbing system.
The first situation where this can be a
problemis with the water supply to pans,
basins and WCcistern inlets, says David
Hughes, technical services manager, at top
bathroomdesigner and distributor CP Hart,
where the terminations on the connecting
British Standard Pipe (BPS) end in a male
thread and the European inlets have a 3/8 BSP
male thread.
To remedy this, Hughes says, a plumber can
use a or 3/8 brush or swivel nut that will
make up the size difference. Other problems can
arise with waste /overflowsystems where a
European bath includes a trap, or where there is
any combination waste/filler. Say you are
installing a high-end, German Hoesch bath, the
last section of the bath trap can often be
unscrewed to reveal a 1.5 BSP male thread, is
Hughes tip, use a Compression to Female 1.5
plastic coupling, and youre back onto UKwaste
pipe. AMcAlpine adaptor can also work.
Lara Francis, former head designer at Flow
bathroomdesign, nowhas her own design
practice and offers a specialist bathroomand
wet roomconsultancy service. She says her
most common issue is with the difference
between British and European water pressure,
with European being much higher.
British taps are tested to British Standard
(BP) whereas European fittings are tested to
European Notification (EN) to what is called 3
bar pressure. So when using European products
in British systems, and the client wants to
increase the houses water pressure, there are a
Foreign manufacturers tempt UKdesigners with their beautiful products but
when it comes to installing them, the buyer should definitely beware!

RESTORATION DRAMA
Gush Design reinstates the period grandeur of a Mayfair
mansion and adds some playful touches
BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS
A light and airy Danish home more than doubles in size
to accommodate a growing family
The sensitive restoration of a
property of this size actually involves
more work than rebuilding the entire
house, reveals Paul Broadley of Gush
Design, who took on the daunting task of
creating a new interior for this
Edwardian mansion in Mayfair.
The townhouse had lost its period
charm over the years and the original
proportions had been broken up to create
a warren of nameless rooms, he says.
At the same time, incongruous additions
had diluted the character: the result was
soulless. We were brought in to restore
the grandeur and create a home that
fused elegance with comfort.
It was a complicated brief. The client
wanted a venue for entertaining on a
grand scale and for the home to have an
ambiance of tradition. The scheme also
had to accommodate the owners love of
contemporary art and on a totally
practical level, the accommodation had to
incorporate a substantial home office and
provision for large-scale business
meetings, Broadley explains.
Although its exterior is protected by
virtue of being in a conservation area, the
house is not listed. This was a big
advantage, giving the Gush team the
flexibility to bring the homes interior
services up to modern standards
although this was no small job.
Essentially, the house was gutted,
says Broadley. We stripped everything
back to the bare shell and then started
installing all the mechanical and
electrical systems that you would expect
of a 21st century home. We included
5km of data cabling, audio-visual
connectivity to all rooms, air
conditioning and exceptionally powerful
heating and hot water supply systems,
which had to supply more than 1,068m
2
of accommodation.
Another key task was to maximize the
natural light and create a free-flowing
space. When Gush discovered that the
entire roof needed to be replaced, the
team used the opportunity to add a
walk-on glazed skylight to flood the
heart of the house with light. Many floor
joists were replaced and sound and heat
insulation was added before laying down
new oak parquet flooring throughout.
Most of the walls were replastered, the

windows completely reconditioned and
fire-rated doors installed. The newlayout
nowincorporates a central staircase, with
well-proportioned rooms to the front and
the rear. The reception rooms occupy
the ground and first floors, the bedroom
suites and a full-height-glazed library are
on the upper floors while the staff
accommodation and catering facilities
are situated in the basement.
But this was just the groundwork for
the bigger challenge of restoring the
houses period charm. The starting point
was to reviewthe existing architectural
elements. This included the magnificent
oak staircase with its wonderful patina of
age, the fireplaces those that were not
original were supplied by Chesneys
and the decorative plasterwork, cornicing
and mouldings, says Broadley. The rest
was a blank canvas. We reintroduced
mahogany wall panelling to the dining
roomand added hand-painted panelling
to the entrance hall and many of the
bedrooms and bathrooms.
Gush has filled the property with
show-stopping features, all classically
beautiful yet playful a look achieved
by oversizing, stylizing or reinventing
traditional elements. The large, red,
button-back sofas in the main reception
roomwere designed by Gush, built by
Beltrami Designs and upholstered
in Fox Linton velvet. These sit on a
chequerboard floor of black-and-white
oak parquet by Campbell &Young, which
is reflected on the antique glass cladding
on the walls by Chelsea Glass.
Another key feature is the 8m
chandelier one of the largest in a
private London home suspended in the
stairwell. Gush worked with Rainbow
Lighting on the design, which was
manufactured in Venice and shipped in
three sections. It contains 1,000
handmade drops of a unique
smoked-bronze glass and took a teamof
four more than eight hours to hang.
The hand-painted fresco on the
library ceiling, restored to its former glory
by Angel Interiors, makes a unique
statement when combined with the
clients contemporary art collection.
Gush and designer Jona Hoad even
created a unique artwork for the project.
Acutout of a world map was layered on
to a sheet of Perspex that matches the
walls paint finish (RumCaramel 3 from
Dulux) and then backlit. ARAHalo
lighting fromthe London Lighting
Company bookends the piece.
Gush spent 12 months on the project,
ending on time and to budget. Everyone
was really committed to the restoration
and took pride in bringing the house back
to life. The client nowhas a home that,
while grand, is very much their own and
is comfortable as well as beautiful.

Charlotte and Niels Erik Thomsen moved to this house,
located in a small village in the south of Jutland, Denmark, 15
years ago. Since then, they have had three children and as their
family has grown, so has their home.
When we first moved in, the property was small only
stretching to about 100m
2
old and out of date, says
Charlotte, who is one of the owners of Dinesen flooring. The
Thomsens have since overseen two lots of extension work. The
first took place when they had been in the house eight years
and the second got under way four years later.
We made the rooms much bigger, knocking down interior
walls and uniting the kitchen, family room and living room and
giving them high ceilings, explains Charlotte. The house is
now more than twice its original size now reaching 260m
2
.
We only had one child when we moved in but suddenly we had
three so we had to make it bigger!

Charlotte and Niels generated all the ideas for transforming
the property. My husband and I had some ideas, which we
made into drawings, she says. Then we approached a local
architect we knewand asked himto make some blueprints.
This process took about a year.
As well as creating a large family-orientated space, the
Thomsens put in skylights that allow natural light to flood the
house during the day. They decided not to fit blackout blinds in
the main roomto enable the family to benefit fromthe houses
rural location and gaze at night sky. We dont have any
blackout blinds at all, meaning we can see the stars at night.
The house is located in a very small town with a population of
around 2,000. Its a very peaceful area with forests and lakes.
The interior is illuminated by spot lighting, which lines the
internal perimeter of the downstairs living area. One benefit of
such a vast space is that it can accommodate imposing fixtures

The bathroom has also undergone some substantial
renovations, being extended from 5m

. It features a
round bath with inset whirlpool jets from Dan Spa and can hold
five people. The floor is tiled with black granite.
The exterior of the house has also undergone a
transformation. Niels Erik has a plumbing business and has,
among other projects, worked on shop facades all over Europe.
He used his skills to give their house a new metal roof.
Charlotte explains: To start with the property was a red house
with a black roof. However, my husband owns a plumbing
company so he was able to make a new roof out of zinc.
The exterior also features a decked area, again made from
Dinesen wood.

PRACTICE PROFILE | 85
While she may claim that luck has
played a big part in her career, a quick glance
at Suzy Hoodlesss CV reveals a significant
amount of talent combined with an impressive
array of familiar names.
After beginning her career as an assistant
at Designers Guild, Hoodless now has her own
studio and showroom in Notting Hill, from
where she creates interiors for a range of
clients. These include Nick Jones, the creator of
the Soho House members club, and Working
Title films, to which she was introduced by
Alasdhair Willis of Established & Sons.
Hoodless admits her client list has grown
100 per cent by word of mouth. Having a
physical presence is great, she says of her
studio on Clarendon Cross. We get passing
trade and are working on an eco house project
that began when the client just happened to
walk past. Hoodlesss office has three full-time
staff and freelancers at the top of their game
join the team depending on the workload.
Most of Hoodlesss work is residential,
working with European or US clients who often
ask her to design more than one of their homes.
They tend to already be quite design savvy,
she confesses, but adds there is sometimes
some hand-holding required. We recently
worked on a project where the house hadnt
been touched for more than 20 years and we
had to spend a lot of time educating the client,
taking them to places, showing them lots of
different products. She is currently embarking
on a series of rooms at Aynhoe Park, a
colossal Sir John Soane house in Oxfordshire.
Hoodlesss experience as a journalist,
notably as part of the launch team at
Wallpaper, has given her a very thorough
grounding in design and an appreciation of
quality. This informs her own work and, in
addition to the interior design projects,
Hoodless is creating products for herself and
for leading interiors brands. Her first
large-scale commercial commission was
designing wallpaper for Osborne & Little.
They are so well organized, with fantastic
distribution and marketing, she enthuses.
Since then she has designed cashmere throws
for Scottish mill Johnstons and most recently
designed a rug and wallhanging for the Rug
Company, which made its debut at Decorex.
Hoodless also has her own furniture pieces
in development and is working on a fabric
collection that will use her confident colour
palette. I love colour, its very important to me,
she says. And I love the design process. When
you design, you have to trust your gut feeling.
Products are a big thing for me because they
stand to become your legacy.

Scottish company ANTA was
founded by husband-and-wife
teamAnnie and Lachlan Stewart.
Lachlan runs the architectural practice while
Annie is the head interior designer and also
designs the full range of ANTA products. These
are all proudly made in Scotland by local
craftsmen using natural materials, mostly pure
new wool but also linen and silk. Annie first
used tartan for a range of fashion accessories
that combined the classic with the
contemporary and were sold by Harrods,
Paul Smith and Katharine Hamnett. Her early
colour combinations were inspired by the
unexpected beauty of faded original pieces of
tartan, which gave Annie the freedom to
experiment with a textile tradition that seemed
untouchable. ANTA produces new tartans,
recolours existing family tartans
and offers a bespoke textile design service.
www.anta.co.uk
TARTAN designs offer huge scope for being
updated with modern takes on classic designs,
but originally the colours held cultural
meaning. The original piece of clan tartan
pictured above, called Hunting Fraser, could be
anything from 50 to 200 years old and
historical details can been found in the design.
For example, the brown ground colour in this
piece signifies it was worn during the day,
whereas the Dress Fraser, with a red ground
colour, would have been worn in the evening.
Tartans generally have the same number of
stripes in the warp (lengthways) as in the weft
(widthways), which gives the patterns their
famous balance and colour harmony. Tartan is
woven from threads that cross at right angles
and the pattern, called the sett, has a
rectangular format. Traditionally, the fabric
would have been be made by spinning local
wool and dying the thread with natural
vegetable dyes before weaving.

Inside story Each tartan pattern, which
is a unique combination of colours, checks and
intersecting lines, was traditionally a badge for a
specific Scottish family or clan. The designs,
produced by local weavers and coloured using
local plant dyes, distinguished the inhabitants of
different regions. In 1822, King George IV started a
tartan craze when he wore full Highland dress for a
state visit to Edinburgh. His enthusiasm for the
fabric boosted the Scottish weaving and tailoring
industries. Royal endorsement continued when
Queen Victoria and Prince Albert decorated
Balmoral Castle in tartan, using Royal Stewart and
Hunting Stewart tartans for carpets and Dress
Stewart for curtains and upholstery. Today, the
Scottish Tartans Authority, a charity that keeps a
national repository of tartan designs, has more
than 7,000 patterns on record. Anyone from
members of the public to designers, weavers and
kilt makers can register new tartan designs.
www.tartansauthority.com
January 2010 | www.idfxmagazine.com
Tartan is always in fashion. It is both
outrageous and reserved the essential
ingredients for a striking design. Fashion
designers often use tartan to stop traffic.
As a textile designer, I find tartan gives me the
chance to use a great deal of colour in an
ordered manner. If you used the same number
of colours in a print it would look riotous but
with a tartan it is much more rigid. It is
colourful yet controlled with inexhaustible
potential. Although tartans are based on
traditional arrangements of lines and squares,
you can subvert these grids with unusual
colourways. ANTA recolours tartans so they
have an up-to-the minute character while
retaining a very Scottish twist of sobriety.
Tartan is the one fabric design that has a
universally recognized national identity and
there are not many, at home and abroad, who
can resist the association with Scotland.
