Organization of the Layout Department
0here a +lant 7ayout 8epartment e9ists, it will probably handle such activities as those
indicated throughout this chapter. $ts organi(ation could be somewhat as shown in Figure 1-&.
Functions will vary, of course, from plant to plant. $n the smaller plant, activities indicated above would be
grouped together, while in larger plants they might be subdivided, depending upon the amount of work to be
done, the number of people involved, the functions performed by other departments or divisions
.:evertheless, all these activities, as well as those implied in /able 1-", e9ist in every plant. $t is the degree
to which they are either necessary or done that varies. $n a small manufacturing plant of )3 to 133
employees, one person may be responsible for all the activities indicated. $n a plant of .,333 to 13,333
employees, making automobiles, household appliances, etc., 33 to &3 men might be re;uired to handle the
same range of activities.

l-elationship bet'een Layout an! Other Departments
$f the finished layout is to represent the best possible arrangement, the whole hearted
cooperation of many people is necessary. $ncluded in this group of people who can contribute
information or offer suggestions will be not only members of the +lant 7ayout 8epartment,
but also persons from practically every other department and division in the plant. -ome of
the departments and divisions thus concerned, and the areas in which their cooperation is
needed are listed in /able 1-3. /hese are only a few of the ways in which other departments
and divisions can be of invaluable aid to the layout group. /he utmost in cooperation is
needed among all concerned if a project as large as a layout is to be successfully completed.
Conclusion
/his chapter has attempted to define the facilities design and plant layout function, to briefly
outline its importance and its activities and responsibilities, and to indicate its place and role
in the organi(ation.
