WIROLOGY

Duration: 1 hr. Maximum Marks: 30

INSTRUCTIONS: MEMBERS INFO:
1. This paper consists of 15 questions. All questions are compulsory.
2. Answers requiring explanations should be written in a legible handwriting.
3. Only final result is required in case of numerical questions.
4. The marking scheme is as follows:
(a) Qns 1-5 carry 1 mark each.
(b) Qns 6-10 carry 2 marks each.
(c) Qns 11-15 carry 3 marks each.
5. Use of calculator is permitted.
6. Some questions are marked with an asterisk. These will be used to resolve ties.
7. All the Best

#1. Is it possible to measure the in-built potential barrier voltage of a semiconductor diode using a standard
laboratory voltmeter? Support your answer with a cogent explanation.
#2. Draw a circuit which uses a breakdown diode to regulate the voltage across a load.
#3. Draw the piecewise linear volt-ampere characteristics of a p-n diode. What is the circuit model for the ON state?
#4*. A bulb in a staircase has two switches, one switch being at the ground floor and the other one at the first floor.
The bulb can be turned ON and also can be turned OFF by any one of the switches irrespective of the state of the
other switch. The logic of switching of the bulb resembles which type of logic gate?
#5. Which gate is the basic unit of a digital comparator circuit?
#6. For a certain capacitive system connected to a battery, one of the plates is driven by a constant-speed motor so
that the capacitance between the two plates varies according to the equation:
()

( )
If the battery potential remains constant at V volts, plot the current as a function of time. Label your plot properly.
#7*. A transformer has 100 turns on the primary and 200 turns on the secondary. A current in the primary causes a
magnetic flux which links all turns of both the primary and the secondary. The flux decreases according to the law
= exp (- t) weber, when t 0. Find the voltage induced in the secondary.
#8. The output of a two level AND-OR gate network is F. What will be the output when all the gates are replaced by
NOR gates?
#9. Assuming =200,

=0.7V. The mode of operation of the BJT in the accompanying figure is:

#10. Determine the voltage output (Vo) of the op-amp in the accompanying figure in terms of V1 and V2.

#11*. An amplifier using an op amp with slew rate=1V/s has a gain of 40 dB. If the amplifier has to faithfully
amplify the signal from DC to 20 kHz without any distortion, then the signal amplitude should not exceed what
maximum value?
#12. Determine voltage (

) for the circuit in the accompanying figure assuming both diodes to be made up of
Silicon.

#13*. Given a train of n equally spaced pulses, the first at t = 0 and the last at t = (n 1) T.
(a) Draw a logic system which will deliver only one pulse at t = 0. HINT: Use a delay and an inhibitor.
(b) Repeat the same for a system which will deliver a single pulse at t = n T.
#14. Find the current flowing through the 2K resistor in the accompanying network.
