STORAGE TANKS EXTERNAL FLOATING ROOFS

MARCH 1993

EGE 14-S-12 1993

1.

GENERAL

1.1 Roofs shall be of the multiple compartment, single-deck pontoon, or double-deck type in accordance with API Standard 650, Appendix C. The type of roof shall be the most economical for the tank diameter, unless otherwise specified. 1.2 Pontoon bulkheads shall be completely welded for liquid tightness.

1.3 To avoid fatigue failure caused by wind effects, single-deck pontoon roofs in which the single deck exceeds 52 m (170 ft) in diameter shall be stiffened, and the design shall be submitted for Mobil approval, with the bid information.

1.4 Roof support legs shall be adjustable to carry the roof in an upper cleaning position with 2 m (6.5 ft) minimum clearance and a lower operating position with 75 mm (3 in.) clearance from tank internals and nozzles. For tanks with internal shell coatings, leg adjustment shall be sufficient to permit shell recoating without roof interference. 1.5 Roof rotation shall be prevented by means of a vertical guide pipe. The minimum pipe size shall be in accordance with Table 1. 1.6 Where a windgirder with an upward flange is located below overflow slots (for a shell extension), slots of the same size or larger shall be provided in the windgirder. These slots shall be inserted immediately below the overflow slots to prevent flooding the windgirder during overflow. 1.7 2. Foam piping shall be in accordance with EGE 14-S-8. SEALS

2.1 Stainless steel shoe primary seals shall be used. Shoes shall be Type 304 (Type 316 shall be used when the liquid contains chlorides), 1.2 mm (18 USS gage) minimum thickness. 2.2 Nonmetallic seal material shall be satisfactory for use with petroleum products with aromatic content up to 75 percent unless otherwise specified. Where oxygenates (e.g., MTBE) are present, nonmetallic seal material shall be a laminate with tetrafluoroethylene on both sides with a total minimum thickness of 0.36 mm (14 mil). 2.3 Each steel shoe section shall be electrically bonded to the roof with stainless steel shunts at intervals of 3 m (10 ft), maximum, on the tank circumference. Insulated joints or jumper bonds are not required. Shunts shall extend from the shoe to the roof, above the seal area.

2.4 Shunts shall be provided for secondary seals that have no electrical bond between the shell and roof, with shunt spacing as noted in Paragraph 2.3. 2.5 When a secondary seal is not required, provision shall be made for future installation of a secondary seal with the tank in service. 2.6 Seals shall conform to the following:

DRAINS Roof drains shall be limited to the following types: (a) Flexible steel/elastomer hoses as manufactured by the Mesa Rubber Co., Coflexip & Services, Inc., Dunlop Ltd, or equal. Equivalency shall include a hydrostatic collapse pressure no less than 660 kPa (96 psi) and a hydrotest of 410 kPa (60 psi) or more. The lay pattern shall be specified by the vendor to avoid the floating roof legs and there shall be electrical continuity between the hose flanges. (b) Pipes with wire-reinforced hose pivot joints manufactured by Pivot Master, Inc., or equal, may be used with Mobil approval. Expansion devices shall be provided for pivot joints in freezing climates.

Nonmetallic material shall be satisfactory for use with the specified liquid and with petroleum products with aromatic content up to 75 percent unless otherwise specified. Where oxygenates are present, nonmetallic material shall be tetrafluoroethylene or a material approved by Mobil. 3.2 A steel gate valve shall be placed on the tank shell at the lower end of the roof drain piping. For a single-deck roof, a gate valve may be specified for the roof end of the drain pipe and located to allow temporary removal of the check valve specified by API Standard 650, Appendix C. 3.3 Emergency drains shall be provided for double-deck roofs. The top of the drain shall be flanged and an elastomer with radial cuts (to limit emissions) shall be bolted to the flange.
