Outdoor Classroom always a hit with the 5th graders

The
Valley
County
Conservation District hosted the
21st Annual Outdoor Classroom for
5th graders on May 1st.

Over 80 students from three local
schools and 17 volunteers from NRCS,
DNRC, MT FWP, MSU Extension
Service, CMR Refuge, Weed District
and BLM came together for a fun day
of natural education.

The day began at East Side School range plant scavenger hunt and
for an edible insect presentation by
grazing discussion by Randy
Dirkson and Marc Kloker from
Roubie Younkin and Shelley Mills
of MSU Extension Service followed
DNRC;
by Rice Krispie treats with ants noxious weed ID by Stone Tihista
and banana bread made with meal
from the Weed District;
worms. The students then traveled interactive river modeling trailer
by Ann Kulczyk and Nate Ward
to Kiwanis Park where they traveled
from DNRC;
through and participated in eight
different stations:

Ron Selden and Lisa Flowers from MT FWP showed students some beautiful owls and talked
about their habitat and behavior. Students then examined owl pellets, which consisted of
undigested food. They found some true treasures jaw bones, ribs, teeth and seeds.

Service gave a video presentation on edible bugs followed
by serving up Rice Krispie treats with ants and banana
bread made with ground mealworm. They also had students
dissect a bug and informed students of the allowed bug
content in our everyday foods. Some of us are not too eager

Commission Meeting in Fort Peck to follow

Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks

will host a public open house in
Glasgow for the Fish & Wildlife
Commission on May 21, which will
be followed by the commissions
regular monthly meeting in Fort
Peck, on May 22.
The open house will be held
for area residents to informally visit
with Fish & Wildlife Commissioners
and other FWP staff. The open
house starts at 6:30 p.m. on May
21 at FWP Region 6 Headquarters,
54078 U.S. Highway 2 West. Before
the open house commissioners will
participate in an Intake Diversion
Dam and paddlefish tour on the
lower Yellowstone River. Thats set to
begin at 8 a.m.
The
commissions
regular
meeting also open to the public -will begin at 8:30 a.m. on May 22 at
the Fort Peck Hatchery in Fort Peck,

will make final decisions on:

FWP will seek the commissions
endorsement to proceed with
projects that would: conserve fish and
wildlife habitat and allow for angling,
hunting, and other recreational use
on 635 acres along the Musselshell
River in central Montana; create an
in-stream flow lease on Cow Creek
near Chinook; and allow for bighorn
sheep augmentations or transplants
in several areas.
Informational items include
reports on Montanas water supply, a
fish health rule and a recent request
from Alberta, Canada wildlife
officials for sage grouse to augment
populations there.
