1. Hydrogen atoms bonded to phosphorus are readily available as nascent hydrogen to carryout

3. FeSO4 undergoes cationic hydrolysis slowly with the water of crystalisation as described
below to form Fe(OH)2 which is then oxidised by air to form Fe(OH)SO4 - basic ferric sulphate.
This is why green vitriol invariably contains Fe
+ 3
impurities. It is evident that green vitriol
when exposed to air turns yellowish brown due to formation of basic ferric sulphate. Hence
green vitriol is not used as primary standard during titration.

However, in the presence of (NH4)2SO4 the above hydrolysis is prevented because
ammonium sulphate being a salt of weak base-strong acid undergoes hydrolysis at a rate faster
than the hydrolysis of FeSO4 and maintains necessary p
H
value to undo the hydrolysis of FeSO4.
As a result, conversion of Fe
+ 2
to Fe
+ 3
is prevented. So, Mohrs salt serves as a better standard
than green vitriol K2Cr2O7 , when dissolved in water, not only dissociates but also undergoes
anionic hydrolysis at p
H
= 7 to establish dichromate-chromate dynamic equilibrium as given
below.

Now, since AgOH is basic in nature, when it is added to an aqueous solution of K2Cr2O7 the p
H
of
the solution becomes greater than 7 and the above equilibrium favours to CrO4
-2
side. As a result,
brick red precipitate of Ag2CrO4 is obtained instead of Ag2Cr2O7. Bleaching powder dissociates

However, in warm water, ClO

(hypochlorite ion) disproportionates as;

Oxidising action of
1
ClO

is more than that of

1
3
ClO

. So, in cold water the oxidising action of bleacing

powder is more. Similarly, a cold aqueous solution of chlorine contains HClO while a warm aqueous
solution of chlorine contains HClO3. Acidic nature of HClO3 is higher than that of HClO.

9. Crystals with F-centres - unpaired electrons are present and hence paramagntic. In Frankel defect
ions are dislocated from the normal sites to interstitial sites. The unit cell of diamond that follows
ZnS structure, there are eight carbon atoms and not four. The electrical neutrality is maintained
due to Schottky defects since pairs of ions are missing.

exists but not PBr6
-1
due to large size of Br. So, solid PBr5 exists as PBr4
+ 1
and Br
-1
. Non-
existence of PH5 against PF5 may be due to any one of the following reasons;
(i) Higher oxidising power of F over H
(ii) Higher strength of P-F bonds over P-H bonds
(iii) Higher electronegativity of F over H
Because of all the above reasons, when hydrogen atoms are around phosphorus the

stays penetrated towards Bi and forms strong bond that releases energy sufficient enough to
overcome the resistance offered by inert pair effect of Bi. Hence Bi shows + 5 state with fluorine.
