we were on a south tour with Swamiji and it
was at Pondicherry that some of us had the
opportunity of watching the rising Golden
Sun. We were watching the ocean and the
waves, trying to analyze the way Swamiji

ESSENCE OF VALUES
Are values more important in life than
mere actions we perform? Are both
necessary to grow into an enlightened
citizen? What is the connection between
Values and Actions that we perform?
Have we ever pondered over this topic
and tried to understand how this life
flows unceasingly into life. There are
people whom we call enlightened ones
and when they perform any action it
becomes a value, whereas an ordinary
mind will change values into mere
action. That is the difference between
an extraordinary soul and ordinary
souls.
Action that carries value as essence
is Godly action and produces enormous
amount of positive energy whereas the
action without values will have
negative impact on the society. Then
what is that which makes enlightened
ones to transform every action into
value? They function from the soul
whereas an ordinary soul functions
from the ego, body or mind: we call it ‘I’.
Action is same but the approach is
society whereas other one leads to
indifference. One is found externally
indifferent but internally thinking and
externally composed but internally
indifferent to the society. When the
latter perform actions, they will never
have spiritual impact on the society.
They are more deadly than atom bombs.
They are living biological bombs.
Therefore what we need is the right
attitude or simplicity or innocence of a
child to know and function like SWAMI NACHIKETANANDA
When love overflows and is expressed through every word &
deed, we call it Compassion.

everything exists in this world- beautiful
creation of God, You and I, Self and Ego,
Body and Mind. But to get that clarity
we need to dive deep to find out our
forgotten identity or soul. Soul is not
your identity but you. Once you touch
‘Self’ and come back, your every action
will become a value. Whatever you
perform will become Yaga. From that
yaga the action in the form of fire will
emerge and becomes the best
expression of yours or the real value.
So let us make our every action into
value by churning out entire being…let
the best come out and spread
everywhere…let the nobility make way
into life…let us all live in harmony and
peace…let us all learn togetherness and
live together…let ‘I’ emerge from the
self…and let that self function through

 Discover your Predominant Nature
In previous issues we
tried to understand what
Sadhana and the result of
Sadhana or fruit of Sadhana
are. In the present issue we
will try to understand what kind of
Sadhanas should be adopted, to
discover one’s nature. Our sages or the
spiritual scientists have practiced and
experienced various branches of
Sadhanas or streams of yogas. Yoga is
not only Asana, Pranayama and
Meditation. Yoga is the Union between
individual soul and the supreme soul,
Yoga is a divine science where you try
to unite yourself with the supreme soul.
Though siblings may look alike, they
don’t have the same nature. So, to
cater to the individual’s predominant
nature we have various streams of
Yogas like Karma Yoga, Bhakti Yoga,
Jnana Yoga, Raja Yoga, Hatha Yoga,
Japa Yoga, Mantra Yoga, Tantra Yoga,
Laya Yoga and Swara Yoga etc. Srimad
Bhagavad Gita comprises various
streams of Yogas from 1st chapter to
18th chapter so that you can follow any
of the streams of yoga to achieve the
ultimate goal in life.
Just as some children by birth are
found to be great singers, artists, poets
etc. likewise in you also there is one
predominant nature. For example, one
doesn’t like to meditate but he likes to
work and you can say he likes the path
of action. So in him Karma Yoga is more
dominant. The one who doesn’t like to

do Asanas might like to chant lord’s
name and in him Japa Yoga is more
dominant. For example, a mother has
three sons all of whom like brinjal but
not the same preparation. One wants
to eat the brinjal fried, one likes it
stuffed with masala, one likes it cooked
in tamarind juice etc. They all like brinjal
but the taste differs from one son to
another. Destination is same but you
need to take up the path which you like
most. F ive people want to go to
Rishikesh, one goes to Rishikesh by foot,
one goes by bus, one goes by train, one
goes by car, and the other goes by
flight. Whatever the mode of
transportation might be they will all
reach Rishikesh but the one who is
going by flight will save his time and
reach the destination fast. Similarly
when you discover your predominant
nature and take up that stream, it is
like going by flight. As you know, any
path can lead to the destination but if
you want to save time and energy you
should go by flight. Though we are all
human beings, according to our
Samskaras we have different nature.
So based on our Samskaras we need to
find out the path that is best for us.
Discover the mode of best
transportation which you have in you,
in order to experience true self of yours.

MOTHER TONGUE
Along with many advantages that
Globalization has granted us there are
quite a few disadvantages that have
been thrust upon us. Fading of
indigenous culture and language is the
foremost of the list of unwanted
changes. I am fortunate and proud to
possess a great part of my parents’
proficiency in Telugu. But I am very
unfortunate to admit that my children
might not be able to claim the same
pride. There is no doubt that they are
versed with wider range of subjects
than I knew at their age! If they have
demonstrated broader and better
learning skills in diverse areas, what is
the reason that they are not using the
same grasp and interest in learning
Mother tongue?
Reasons are plenty but the two chief
factors that can make most difference
are reforms in Education system and
attitude of Parents. These two forces
can work hand in hand to revive the
knowledge and pride in one’s own
mother tongue. Nevertheless God has
his own way of putting things in track
when things go astray. In a recent
incident two young school children in
St Joseph’s School, Kadapah A.P. were
punished by hanging placards around
their necks with the words ‘I will never
speak in Telugu’ written on them and
paraded in the campus under hot Sun.

hard to choose which is better and we
don’t need to. But it is our Social
responsibility to know one’s first
language- the language first spoken by
the child, before s/he moves on to learn
other languages. Speaking mother
tongue is our moral obligation to our
parents and ancestors.It is a sign of
pride in our own Culture.

If there is only one God, what is the role
played by different Gods and Goddesses?
Ans: Yes everything exists. One
exists…all exist… One industrialist who
happened to be found everywhere had
all kinds of industries. He had many
visiting cards. Once his Guru asked why
he carried so many visiting cards. He
said that there were different people
engaged in different fields who needed
to know about particular industry. Guru
was pleased by this answer but not fully
so he suggested that he makes only one
visiting card. Industrialist accepted and
with great difficulty made one single card
with few prominent industries
mentioned on the card and showed to
the Guru. Guru was more pleased but
not completely. Then Guru asked if it is
possible for the people to know about
him without his Visiting card. This
industrialist thought about it and felt,
“Yes there is possibility! What Guru says
needs to be pondered on. If I am able to
condense my visiting cards into one then
I might even drop this visiting card and
still make a difference in the society. Isn’t
it possible to function without having
any external identity? Many are there
in the world who never heard my name
but will come to know if they come into
contact with any of my expressions

wind God also known as Prana was
their deity. “Then you must know
that this world originates in Prana,
dwells in it and merges into it at the
end. Prana pervades visible, invisible
and whole universe” said the young
Brahmachari. To this the sages replied
impatiently, “Yes, we know it beyond
any doubt.” The Brahmachari
persuaded them to answer the next
question, “Oh honorable sages, could
you tell me to whom did you make this
food as an offering?” “Of course to
Prana the deity whom we worship!”
replied Shaunaka and Abhipratari.

irritate me and I used to start crying.
Now I don’t cry because I am used to
it. Even today when I went to Vidya
Mandir he started searching my
pockets and saying “where is my
money, where is my money?”He took
out my watch from my wrist and
wore it in his hand and said “thank
you for gifting this to me”.
He used to tell me silly jokes like "A
man who was walking and he fell
down” and makes me laugh at these
jokes. My mother says he does this
to test me.
He has promised not to irritate me
anymore.
The quality I like is that he tells me
whatever I want to know about God.
One day when he had visited my
house at Mumbai that night he sat
down to teach me Brahmari. He
asked me who my favorite God was.
I replied it was Krishna, He asked me
to close my eyes and imagine
Krishna’s picture. Then he told me to
join my fingers and hum. That night I
saw a vision of Krishna in my dream
playing his flute. I woke up in the
morning remembering my dream
and sharing it with my family and
Swamiji.
That’s all about Swamiji for now
and I will continue to contribute more
about him in the forthcoming issues.
