Assessment 1
84711 User-Centred Design

Assessment 1
Title Product Design / Structure
Design Type DAB Workshop Trolley
Weight 20%
DUE Date Week 5 / Tuesday (Studio 1) 25th March. UPDATED 6/3/2014

Aim
Generate a trolley design for the Faculty of Design Architecture and Building, to be used by workshop,
academic and general technical staff. The trolley should be designed to improve upon and replace the
existing trolleys.

Parameters
At each phase you will be required to demonstrate application of research & design methods to progress
through the project and develop your design process. An outline (a guide) of the phases and suggested
methods for application are shown in the table on page 2. Please note that your tutor may suggest
alternative ways of progressing based on review of your design as it develops.

Deliverables
The following items are due at the conclusion of the project:
1. General Assembly Drawing
The GA is a production drawing intended to communicate parts and assembly information to a
manufacturer. As such the drawing should be generated according to Australian Standard drafting
convention at a scale appropriate for the product. Your tutor will advise you of further details and
requirements.
Format: Hardcopy (folded to A4 in the correct way)
2. Digital Design Report
The Report is to be formatted for viewing on a tablet (like an iPad). We recommend .pdf format for
the file and it is to include information on your design process, a separate section on ergonomic
factors and innovation and renderings / diagrams of your final design. Your tutor will advise you on
the length of the report and its specific contents.
Format: USB Flash Drive. Copy to be transferred to UTS computer on DUE date.

During the course of the project we will be monitoring your involvement in the class through set exercises
and review of your process journal. Each week you are required to bring progress of your project for review.
Your performance in this regard will be reflected in Assessment 5 : Participation and Knowledge.

Assessment Criteria
The criteria below will be assessed using Re.View.

ILO Code No. Description
P-1 1.1
Ability to demonstrate industry specific analogue and digital skills demonstrated in the
development and final result of the general assembly production drawing.
I-2 1.2
Exploration, experimentation and innovation in the design process evident in the
representations of your final design, in your digital booklet: trolley design.
C-4 1.3
Effectiveness and professionalism of visual presentation skills demonstrated in all
deliverable aspects of this assessment task.

Design Methods
The table below shows the Phases to be worked through each week and suggested methods to apply at
each stage. Please note the following:
a) Some methods have application in a number of phases (i.e. can be used more than once).
b) Based on the development of your design, your tutor may suggest other methods to use.
c) That while there are suggested ways of conducting methods (found in literature) that all methods
are open for adjustment and that the key rules are:
i. That you prescribe the method with a supporting rationale
ii. That you record the carrying out of the method
iii. That you report on the results of the method in a way that can be communicated to a group
iv. That you demonstrate how the results of the method applied, inform the next step
