Following is an analysis and problem statement in response to the request
to improve the current Bus Management System of the city of Lahore.
Introduction
The purpose of this analysis is to determine whether it would be
beneficial for the LTC (Lahore Transport Company) to upgrade the
current system. The requester has indicated that the time of the
arrival of the buses on bus stations is not sure and is not known in
any scenario. This project would affect the buses, bus stations, and
the bus drivers.
Existing System
Background
Presently, the buses depart from the central bus station at a fixed
time. And reach the next bus stations on their way passing through
the traffic. A ticket issuer issues the tickets to the passengers, a ticket
checker ensures that every passenger buys a ticket by getting into
the bus at a random station and checking the ticket of every
passenger manually, a time keeper tries to ensures that the buses
reaches the last station in appropriate time by checking the
departure time and the arrival time on a random bus station.
Problems
As the population of the magnificent city of Lahore is rising and the
number of passengers travelling in the buses increase and the
passengers usually do not have much time. The following problems
have been mentioned by the LTC:
Buses do not reach stations on time and causes the passengers
havoc, passengers are no sure whether they should wait for
the bus or use another mode of transport.
The manual ticket checking system sometimes causes error
and some passengers travel without tickets.
Proposed Solution
GPS and RFID systems should be deployed on the buses so that
they can be tracked and there approximate arrival time on a
bus station should be displayed on screens, deployed on the
stations, using inter connected database.
The ticket or passenger pass should be validated while
entering the departure station and when leaving the exit
station. (e.g metro bus system)
Benefits of the New or Modified System
Following are the number of benefits that could be realized if the
current bus management system of Lahore Transport Company is
modified or renewed to enable passengers reaches the destination
on time and to change the manual ticket checking system of the
current system.
Passengers can be sure about the time of arrival of buses on
the stations.
None of the passenger can travel without paying fare thus
increasing the revenue.
Quality of transport will be increased and trust of passengers
on the company will increase.
Through the automatic ticket checking system the company
could eliminate the need of a ticket checker.
Feasibility of a New or Modified System
Operational
A modified Bus Management System will require the passengers to
verify their pass before entering and leaving the station. In addition
to surety that every passenger pays the fare, passengers will also be
able to check the time of arrival of a bus on the stations as well as
online.

Schedule
The deployment of the modified system will take approximately 3-4
months.

Technical
The Lahore Transport Company will need to buy new database
servers and buy packaged or custom software to manage the
database and ticketing system on the stations. Also it will need to
buy GPS and RFID systems as well as screens to deploy on the buses
and bus stations, respectively.

Economic
The cost for the development of a single station would cost around
3000$ each including the ticket checking system, RFID and screens.
There are almost 120 LTC stations around Lahore so the
development of the stations would cost around 360000$. The
deployment of the GPS and RFID in the buses would cost almost 100$
for each bus and LTC have around 100 buses so it would cost around
10000$. And the elimination of ticket checkers would save almost
10000$ per month. LTC would also need to buy new database servers
that would cost around 15000$.

Recommendation
Based on the findings presented in this report it is highly recommended a
continued study and implementation of the renewed bus management
system.
