Application &
Admission
BAGSS invites applications from exceptionally qualied
graduates in Sociology, Psychology, Empirical Educational
Studies, Political Science, Economics, Demography, and
Statistics, or closely related elds. Candidates must hold a
masters degree (or equivalent) in one of the aforementioned
subjects or be very close to completion. They will need a
demonstrable interest in empirical research.

The Bamberg Graduate School of Social Sciences (BAGSS) is a
school which joins the faculties of Social Sciences, Economics
and Business Administration and of Human Sciences and
Education at the University of Bamberg. Social, empirical and
educational sciences are major elds in Bamberg with a highly
regarded international reputation. Bamberg itself is located in
Franconia, southern Germany. The picturesque town centre is
a UNESCO World Heritage site.
BAGSS is looking for exceptionally qualied international
graduate students. We work with young scholars who
pursue innovative doctoral research, including work that
crosses narrow disciplinary boundaries.

A Focused
Interdisciplinary Prole
BAGSS stimulates and guides innovative doctoral research
on four crucial areas, which we refer to as Pillars:
Pillar 1 Education, personal development and learning
from early childhood to adulthood;
Pillar 2 Education and social inequality
across the entire life course;
Pillar 3 Changes in human capital, labour markets
and demographic structures and their impact
on social inequality in modern societies;
Pillar 4 Governance, institutional change and
political behavior
BAGSS pools the expertise of sociologists, psychologists,
educational and political scientists, economists,
demographers and statisticians who share a concern for
the application of rigorous empirical research methods
and are interested in the interaction between institutions,
individual choices and societal processes.
Doctoral Training:
Tailored to Your Needs
At BAGSS, doctoral researchers
are typically supported by a
committee of three supervisors.
In addition, they benet from
a structured, well-resourced
training programme tailored
to their individual needs.
The language of instruction
at BAGSS is English, and you will be able to write and
defend your thesis in English as well as German. The
programme is designed to be completed in three years.
During this time, dened milestones will assist you
and your supervisors in evaluating the progress of the
doctoral research project.
