PLANARIA LAB REPORT

PROBLEM:
If trisected, which piece of a planarian will regenerate first?

HYPOTHESIS:
If trisected, then the midsection will regenerate first.

THEORY:
Planaria are flatworms that can reproduce sexually. Planaria are
hermaphrodites because they have both female and male gonads. Witch
means that any two Planaria can reproduce by exchanging sperm cells and genes
with each other.

When conditions are less then ideal Planaria can reproduce asexually.
Planeria are able to regenerate anybody part witch means that they can
reproduce asexually. Planaria reproduce asexually by tail dropping or
fragmentation. Tail dropping is when a Planeria clings it self to a object such
as a rock using there Cilia. And pulls until its tail until falls off. This means that the
Planaria is making a clone of itself. Fragmentation is when Planaria do the same
thing except multiple times so there is more than one piece that will clone.
Planeria prefer to reproduce sexually because of genetic diversity.

Planaria reproduce asexually by regeneration. This is possible because of
neoblasts. Neoblasts can heal wounds and even fix missing parts. They do this
by rushing to the wound and building up on it. The neoblasts then fix the missing
part or the wound. Overall neoblasts are really important for the planarian to be
able to regenerate. My hypothesis was correct because my hypothesis said that
the mid section would regenerate first. The reason I did my certain hypothesis
was because the mid section has the lease parts to regenerate.

Data

CONCLUSION:
In this lab we trisected a planeria to see what part would regenerate first.
We tested the anterior the midsection and the posterior. I hypothesized that the
midsection would regenerate first. My data shows by day that the midsection
regenerated first. It also shows details and how much it is moving and if it has
ghost cells and pigmentation. 49% 38 of 78 midsection pieces regenerated first
making it the fastest to regenerate In my class and the whole 7
th
grade. In
conclusion, planeria will regenerate when trisected and the midsection will
regenerate first making my hypothesis correct.

ANALYSIS:
In this lab my partner and I had valid results. They were valid because there were
the same as everyone elses and nothing was different or special about our
planeria. Some changes I would make to make the results even more valid then
they were are, every night coming in to make sure each planarian was gave the
same amount of food, Making sure that the water levels of the petri dishes were
all the same, Making sure that all the planeria had the same water source and
lastly making sure that all the planeria were cut the exact same way. I saw some
things that might of changed the test results they were, people were putting sink
water in the petri dishes and people were cutting the planaria randomly instead
of trying to make it precise. Some things that could of accounted of this were
some kids that didnt really care about this lab and people that were not paying
attention as much as others. Overall most labs were valid but some were not.

In this lab we compared neoblasts in planaria to human stem cells even
though they both have lots of differences. Neoblasts in planaria help with
regeneration. When the planaria wants to reproduce asexually they can tail drop
or do fragmentation. When the planaria does one of these neoblasts can help the
regeneration process they rush to the wound and build up next to the wound.
Neoblasts then start to make the missing parts needed for a planaria to live. On

the other hand human stem cells are different. Stem cells have the potential to
develop into any cell type such as a muscle cell, skin cell, brain cell and so on.
Stem cells are important because of blastocysts. Blastocysts the inner cells give
rise to the entire body of the human including all of the many specialized cell
types.

Today there is less controversy about stem cell research. Both stem cells
hES cells and IPS cells are pluripotent meaning that they can become any cell type
in the body. hES cells are from embryos but IPS cells can be made from adult
stem cells. There is not much debates about human stem cell research. Overall
stem cell research used to be debated all the time but now they have found new
ways to use them so it is now over.
