DISTRACTED WALKING = WALKY ALERT
INTRODUCTION
A recent study by researchers from University at Buffalo in the US found that texting while walking
may result in more injuries per mile than distracted driving. (Robinson, 2014). Satistics show that
the number of people treated because of Distracted walking in 2010 was 1,500 as opposed to a
mere 559 in 2004. (Smola, 2013). Distracted walking is on the rise and should be prevented before
fatal incidents occur.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
Walky Alert aims to make it safer to walk and use your smartphone by a Application that lowers
your risk of harm, easy to use and of high quality.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Safety Mobile App i ndustry
Industry: Safety Mobile App industry. Smartphones have become an essential necessity for todays
work. Applications are the key contents in a smart phone. As technology advances it is increasingly
difficult to keep up with the needs and wants of the customers and how to satify those needs.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: low In this particular industry narowing down from the
general Smart phone Application industry buyer
power is low because there are not many choices
which buyers can chose from.
Supplier power: High Supplier power is high for this industry because buyers
have few choices to choose from. There are not many
competitors in the industry as it is difficult to create
such an application.
Threat of new entrants: High The threat of new entrance is high because it is not

3

3
hard for new competitors to enter the market as it
does not require much knoledge or skill. What new
competitors must remember when entering the
market is the needs of the customers and how they
are going to create new and improved applications
that meet their needs in a short period of time. (Nidhi
Bansal, 2011)
Threat of substitutes: low Threat of substitues is low because there are few
alternatives. Main alternatives in the Mobile Safety
App industry is transparent texting, Type n Walk
which are the main two.
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low In the safety App Industry rivalry is low because there
are not many competitors to compete with.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: According to industry analysis of Safety Mobile App industry I
would say this is a very attractive industry. It is easy to get into the industry however but it is difficult
to create such an application that the customers can fully rely on for their safety and not create
technical problems for their mobile phones.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
Potential customers for this particular product are all smartphone users. Potential customers want
to be able to use their smartphones whenever and wherevever they are going without them getting
hurt. They need an application that will not affect the normal function of their smartphones. We try
to minimise this to a low rate or nothing at all. Customers want software that will get the job done
and not create more technical problems for their smartphones, eg taking ages to load. Recent
reviews on Applications that try to solve distracted walking say Works but super slow takes ages to
load (Cocoathemoncat, 2013) Way too cluttery (Cocoathemoncat, 2013)
3.4 The Product and Service
Walky Alert meets the needs of potential customers because it integrates the idea of transparent
screening which provides a camera view of the direction they are going in. The application is also
aware of sounds, sirens and loud machinery near by which immediately stops the any form of
activitiy occuring at the time or a brief moment and notifies the user of potential risks near by. The

inclusion of the gps in the application helps the user identify in which direction there are roads that
the user may stay away from walking into on coming traffic or crossing the road without looking
both ways. Walky Alert helps satisfy the needs of the customer because it ensures safety while
walking and texting and also the user will not notice the application as they use their phones
regularly as it only alerts them when they decide to turn on the application as they walk on the
streets. It will create minimum technical problems for them.

3.5 Suppliers and Partners
Our potential suppliers would include Google as they offer services like the GPS that is in the centre
of our Application Walky Alert Other potential suppliers are platform manufactorers like Android,
iPhone etc, which they create and develop software for smartphones.
Our potential partners could be Apple as they are the worlds leading Mobile Application
manufacturer and with their reputation we can reach out to a greater amount of people concerning
the issue. We also see Apple as a potential Partner as they have great value in creating Applications
that are og High quality and are easy to use which is what we aim to give our customers. Another
potential partner we could team up with is Vodafone because we can use their services to help
Advertise our product and to ensure majority of people know and can use our product.

3.6 Strategy: Cost Leadership
The Safety Mobile Application Industry targets a broad market as it provides its service to anyone
who uses a smart phone. The cost strategy of our business is low cost because Walky Alert is about
the safety of people while on the streets and roads. Therefore there is no concern about having
immediate success. We aim to make Walky Alert available to everyone at a low price to ensure we
are lowering the staistics of people getting injured while using their phones.
The overall strategy is cost leadership

the Safety Mobile App industry they must be able to build new products that meet the demands of
employees and also improve exsisting products. Our vision statement ensure that applications are
