Castro culture in Galicia

In the past, Galicia was part of the Roman Empire. People lived in new settlements like cities and big
mansions in the country called villae. But they also continued living in some castros.
Viladonga is an example of Galician-Roman period.


The steady settlements, the growth of agriculture and the development of metallurgy led the
communities to set new well-defended settlements, the castros.

Once the existing Galicia was
conquered (part of the ancient
roman province of Gallaecia) the
Castro Culture became part of the
territorial organization of the
Roman Empire.

Men and women lived in big families, all of them part of the castro community.











They used buttons and buckles to hold on the clothes. They embellished themselves with pins, necklaces,
rings, torques, bracelets, earrings objects that set their hierarchy inside the community.


They also used different types of weapons, some made of stone, from a very old tradition, others from iron
or bronze.
