University seventeenth out of 162 UK

research power. Our research quality
and culture is internationally acclaimed,
with a firm commitment to good
research practice. While a wealth of
subject-based research is carried out in
our academic schools, the University
also has a range of powerful research
institutes and centres to pursue
interdisciplinary research across school
and faculty boundaries. The University
brings together a critical mass of RAE
2008 grade 4* world-leading and 3*
internationally excellent interdisciplinary

opportunities for research training.
Postgraduate Training
Newcastle University currently has the
largest number of New Route PhD
students in the country, with 109
students enrolled on a variety of
courses. The exciting range of
programmes, known as Integrated PhDs,
provides broad-based, contemporary
research training. This enables you to
develop your research skills and ensure
they can be applied in academic and
work-related contexts.
As a New Route PhD student, you
undertake a number of taught modules,
designed to help you gain the skills,
knowledge, understanding and ability
to evaluate research in your area. These
modules also help you to prepare a
research proposal and carry it out. On
completion of the taught modules, you
embark upon a research project that
addresses an issue of professional or
academic concern or interest. You then
write up the project as a 50,000-word
thesis.
The New Route
Programme
The New Route programme uses the
Universitys substantial postgraduate
training portfolio as well as enabling you
to gain specialist, discipline-specific skills
and knowledge from taught
programmes to support your
independent research project. This
integrated approach offers you a
learning environment in which you can
broaden and deepen your subject
knowledge, while providing the
opportunity for interdisciplinary study to
extend your expertise in new directions.
Graduates will be well equipped to
make a significant contribution to their
chosen field. All students also benefit
from extensive generic skills
training to ensure that you
possess the requisite skills for
successful employment.
