Rufe Hood Coat
A sweet ruffle on the hood of this swing coat
is the perfect touch for little girls. Knit it in
any of the colors of the easy-care Red Heart
Baby yarn.
YOKE
Cast on 68 (68, 80, 80) sts.
Row 1 (Right Side): Work 5 sts Seed Stitch,
k7 (7, 9, 9) for left front, pm, k1, pm, k8 (8,
10, 10) for left sleeve, pm, k1, pm, k24 (24,
28, 28) for back, pm, k1, pm, k8 (8, 10, 10) for
right sleeve, pm, k1, pm, k7 (7, 9, 9) for right
front, work 5 sts Seed Stitch.
Row 2: Working first and last 5 sts in Seed
Stitch, purl.
Increase Row: Work 5 sts Seed Stitch, k7 (7,
9, 9), M1, sm, k1, sm, M1, k8 (8, 10, 10), M1,
sm, k1, sm, M1, k24 (24, 28, 28), M1, sm, k1,
sm, M1, k8 (8, 10, 10), M1, sm, k1, sm, M1, k7
(7, 9, 9), work 5 sts Seed Stitch 76 (76, 88,
88) sts.
Repeat Increase Row every right side row 12
(7, 7, 12) more times, then every other right
side row 4 (9, 10, 8) times 204 (204, 224,
248) sts.
Work even until piece measures 15 (18.5, 19,
20.5) cm [6 (7, 7, 8)], end with a wrong
side row.
Divide for Body and Sleeves
Remove markers as you come to them. Work
across 30 (30, 33, 36) left front sts, place
42 (42, 46, 52) left sleeve sts on hold; turn
work, and using knit cast-on cast on 6 (9, 9,
9) underarm sts, pm, cast on 6 (9, 9, 9) more
underarm sts, turn work; k60 (60, 66, 72)
back sts, place 42 (42, 46, 52) right sleeve
sts on hold; turn work, and using knit cast-on
cast on 6 (9, 9, 9) underarm sts, pm, cast on 6
(9, 9, 9) more underarm sts, turn work; work
across 30 (30, 33, 36) right front sts 144
(156, 168, 180) sts.
Directions are for size 2; changes for sizes 4,
6 and 8 are in parentheses.
Finished Chest: 61 (66, 71, 76) cm [24 (26,

SPECIAL ABBREVIATIONS
M1 = Make 1 (Inc) Lift strand between
needles to left-hand needle and work strand
through the back loop, twisting it to prevent a
hole, [knit or purl as indicated by pattern st].
knit cast-on (casting on stitches at the
beginning of a row) Start with slip knot or
existing stitches. Knit 1 new stitch, but do not
slide old stitch off left-hand needle. Insert left-
hand needle under and into new loop on right-
hand needle, slip stitch off right-hand needle
1 stitch cast on.
ssk = slip next two stitches knitwise to right
needle, insert point of left needle through front
of sts, knit these sts together through back
loop.
dec = On right side rows, work ssk at
beginning and k2tog at end of rows.
kf&b = knit into front and back of next stitch.
PATTERN STITCHES
Seed Stitch (multiple of 2 + 1)
All rows: *K1, p1; repeat from * to last st, k1.
Notes
1. Coat is worked flat from neck down; first
and last 5 stitches are worked in Seed
Stitch for front bands.
2. When dividing sleeves from body, place
sleeve stitches on hold by slipping to waste
yarn instead of stitch holders. This will
reduce tension on fabric.

BODY
Next row (Wrong Side): Work 5 sts Seed
Stitch; slipping markers, purl to last 5 sts,
work 5 sts Seed Stitch.
Working in pattern, inc 1 st each side of
markers on next row 148 (160, 172, 184)
sts. Increase 4 sts every 8 (10, 11, 12) rows 8
more times 180 (192, 204, 216) sts.
Work even until piece measures 23.5 (26,
28.5, 31) cm [9 (10, 11, 12)], end
with a wrong side row. Work 6 rows Seed
Stitch; cast off.
SLEEVES
Slip 42 (42, 46, 52) sleeve stitches onto
needle so right side is facing for next row.
Rejoin yarn; working in St st and using knit
cast-on, cast on 6 (9, 9, 9) sts at beginning of
next 2 rows 54 (60, 64, 70) sts.
Continuing in St st, dec 1 st each side every
4 (6, 6, 6) rows 2 (1, 2, 7) times, then every
6 (8, 8, 8) rows 6 (7, 7, 4) times 38 (44, 46,
48) sts.
Work even until piece measures 19.5 (25,
28.5, 30) cm [7 (9, 10, 11)], end with
a wrong side row. Work 6 rows Seed Stitch;
cast off.
Repeat for other sleeve.
HOOD
Cast on 36 (36, 42, 42) sts. Work in St st until
hood measures 40.5 (43, 45.5, 48.5) cm [16
(17, 18, 19)]. Cast off.
With long edge and right side facing, pick up
and knit 100 (105, 112, 118) sts. Knit 1 row.
Increase row (Right Side): Kf&b in each stitch
200 (210, 224, 236) sts.
Knit 1 row. Repeat Increase Row once 400
(420, 448, 472) sts. Knit 3 rows; cast off.
FINISHING
Block pieces. Sew sleeve seams, sewing
underarm sts of sleeve to underarm sts of
body.
Fold Hood in half along short side. Sew edges
without ruffle together for back of Hood. Sew
Hood to cast-on neck edge of Coat.
Sew frog closures in place, referring to photo.
Weave in ends.
