II. CATALOG DESCRIPTION

CHIN 1411 (4 Credit Hours)
Beginning Chinese I This is a DCCCD Core Curriculum Course.
Course Description: This is the first semester of academic transfer Chinese. This course
is an introductory course intended for students with little or no knowledge of the
language. Its aim is to present essential vocabulary and grammar, and to develop the
pronunciation, listening, reading, and writing skills necessary for basic communication
and comprehension. Customs and cultural insights are also presented. This course is
cross-listed as CHIN 1311, which is also used in Study Abroad programs. Students may
register for either CHIN 1311 or CHIN 1411 but may receive credit for only one of the
two. (3 Lec., 2 Lab.)

III. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES

The following are desired outcomes for students of CHIN 1411:
Students will acquire high-beginning listening skills in Chinese, which they will
demonstrate by listening to level-appropriate monologs and/or dialogs in that language
and then successfully answering listening-skills questions about them.
Students will acquire high-beginning speaking skills in Chinese, which they will
demonstrate by engaging, in that language, in monologs and/or dialogs that exhibit level-
appropriate coherence, development, fluency, and grammatical and lexical accuracy.
Students will acquire high-beginning reading skills in Chinese, which they will
demonstrate by reading level-appropriate texts in that language and then successfully
answering reading-skills questions about them.
Students will acquire high-beginning writing skills in Chinese, which they will
demonstrate by writing, in that language, compositions that exhibit level-appropriate
coherence, development, and grammatical and lexical accuracy.

NOTE: Character handwriting is not required in this class, you are required to know how to use
keyboard to type simplified Chinese instead in the future. However, I strongly recommend you
practice handwriting yourself at home. The character workbook will help you practice
handwriting with correct stroke order. You can buy the character workbook in paperback version

V. LANGUAGE LABORATORY

If you wish to visit the World Division Language Lab for additional practice, you may do
so at your convenience. Please note, that Lab attendance is not required in this course.

The World Division Language Lab is located in J-building, room 104 (telephone 972-860-
4726). This lab offers a fully-equipped facility where students can go to practice and
improve their listening comprehension and speaking skills. This lab contains expensive
and sensitive electrical equipment; consequently, food and drinks are not
permitted. Children are also not allowed. Lab hours: TBA


VI. SAFETY

For this course, you are not required to come to the Brookhaven College campus.
However, if you do come to campus and need to contact the college police, you can reach
them at 972-860-4190 24 hours a day. Security phones are available at a number of
locations throughout the campus. You will find red emergency phones inside campus
buildings. Outdoor emergency phones are mounted on tall white posts throughout the
campus.


VII. AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES ACT

If you believe that you may need an academic adjustment (such as help with taking notes,
etc.) because of any type of physical disability or learning difference, you should contact

VIII. RELIGIOUS HOLIDAYS

If you will be absent from class for the observance of a religious holiday, you must notify
me in advance. I will excuse you from attending classes or other required activities,
including examinations, for the observance of a religious holy day, including travel for that
purpose. I will not penalize you for that absence, and I will allow you to take an
examination or complete an assignment for that absence within a reasonable time after the
absence.


IX. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: PLAGIARISM / COLLUSION

According to the Student Code of Conduct which is found in the Brookhaven College
Catalog, scholastic dishonesty includes cheating on a test, plagiarism, or collusion.

Plagiarism occurs when a student uses other peoples words or ideas without giving credit
to the author. When a student uses information like facts, opinions, definitions,
descriptions, examples, quotations, or anecdotes from newspapers, books, magazines,
articles, or internet sources, the student must give the name of the author, the source, and
the page number in order to avoid plagiarism.

Collusion is another form of academic dishonesty. It often occurs when students work
together in groups on papers or homework assignments. Students are guilty of collusion
when they copy sections of another students work and represent it as their own work.
Although teachers encourage students to work together and to brainstorm on difficult
topics, in the end, students must put the final product in their own words. Students may not
copy answers from another persons homework, textbook, or writing and represent it as
their own work.

When students commit plagiarism, collusion or copy homework answers, they may receive
a grade of F for the individual assignment or an F grade for the entire semester. It is
also possible that the student may not be able to continue as a student at Brookhaven
College.


X. ATTENDANCE POLICY AND OTHER CLASS POLICIES

For this course, you do not have to attend class or even come to the Brookhaven College
campus.
A schedule of online/writing/oral assignments is maintained. Print off the course calendar
on eCampus and post in a prominent place of study. Do not fall behind on the homework,
oral assignments, and exams.
The online instructor acts as a course facilitator rather than a classroom teacher.
Students, therefore, assume the responsibility of learning course content through
readings in the textbook, course material provided on eCampus, watching video
lessons, completing online activities, and by interacting with the instructor and other
students through email, Voice Board, or Discussion Board.
Most online students do not come to campus. However, all students are welcome to come
to Brookhaven College. We offer a high level of student support for online learners. We
provide on-campus assistance and 24-hour technical support by phone. For on-campus
assistance, the personnel in the Brookhaven College library computer lab, Bldg. L, Room
L374, have been trained to use eCampus and can provide answers to basic questions. In
addition, in-person assistance with eCampus is available in the Social Science and
Distance Learning Division office, Bldg. K, Room K240.
Summer course is very intensive. If you want to be successful in this course, it is
recommended that you invest at least a minimum of three to four (3-4) hours per day, five
to seven (5-7) days a week, depending on your Chinese language background and your
language learning ability. This is NOT a self-paced course. Once the homework
assignments start, they will be due every day.
Consider the eCampus as your classroom that is attended by other students taking the
same course as you. Your consideration of their rights and attention to the rules of the
course are important.
Online Etiquette:
When taking a course online, it is important to remember several points of etiquette that
will smooth communication between the students and their instructors.
1. Avoid language that may come across as strong or offensive. Language can be
easily misinterpreted in written communication. Humor and sarcasm may easily be

misinterpreted as well, so try to be as matter-of-fact and professional as possible.
2. Read first, write later. It is important to read all posts or comments of students and
instructors within the course discussion before asking questions that have already been
answered.
3. Review, review, then send. Theres no taking back a comment that has already been
sent, so it is important to double-check all writing to make sure that it clearly conveys the
exact intended message.
4. An online classroom is still a classroom. Though the courses may be online,
appropriate classroom behavior is still mandatory. It is important to have respect for
fellow classmates and instructors.
5. The language of the Internet. Though still a fairly young type of communication,
certain aspects of this form of communication are becoming conventional. For example,
do not write using all capital letters, as it will consider as shouting. Also, the use of
emoticons can be helpful when used to convey nonverbal feelings (example: :-) or :-( ),
but avoid overusing them.
6. Consider the privacy of others. Ask permission prior to giving out a classmate's
email address or other information.
7. No inappropriate material. Do not forward virus warnings, chain letters, jokes, etc.
to classmates or instructors.

Not all assignments in the workbook are required. Please check the Assignments List or
Calendar on the top of the screen to find the assigned exercises and due dates.
Individual Recording and Partner Activities via Voice Board
You will be asked to make 2 recordings each lesson, either by yourself or with a partner via
Voice Board. The topics will be either chosen from the workbook or provided by your
instructor. You can choose to work by yourself even when its a partner activity.
However, youll get bonus 0.5 point of your final Voice Board grade when you do an
activity with a partner each time via Voice Board on Cheng & Tsui Online Learning
Center.
Composition
For each lesson, you will need to write two compositions. Ill grade your composition and
give you my comments. Based on the comments, you can re-send me the revised one in
order to receive an adjusted grade (an extra 1-10 points).

Reading Comprehension tests
For each lesson, you will need to take a reading test.
Final Skit script and recording
You and your partner are responsible for creating a skit by following the skit description
provided by your instructor. Again, you can choose to do this project by yourself.
However, I strongly suggest you find a partner to practice your listening skill and interact
with your classmates. Email, Discussion Board, or Voice Board can serve as your
communication tools while you try to find a partner and work with her/him.
Quiz on What To Do First and Student Acknowledge Form

You must pass the Quiz on What To Do First before starting the course. You may take the
quiz as many times as necessary. Other than that, you will need to fill out the acknowledge
form and turn it in by the due date. This form counts as one assignment grade.

XII. FINAL GRADE

Components of Final Grade:
Online Workbook x 25%
Individual recording & Partner Activities via Voice Board x 20%
Composition x 20%
Reading Tests x 20%
Final Project: skit performance x 15%

Total 100%

Your final average will be converted into a letter grade via the following system:
90-100 % = A; 80-89 % = B; 70-79 % = C; 60-69 % = D; and 59 % below = F.

At the end of the semester, you will be able to access your final average and final letter
grade via eCampus and your official final letter grade via eConnect.


XIII. WITHDRAWAL

Stop before you drop!

If you enrolled in college level courses for the first time in the fall of 2007 or later, Texas

Education Code 51.907 limits the number of courses you may drop. You may drop no
more than 6 courses during your entire undergraduate career unless the drop qualifies as an
exception. Your campus counseling/advising center will give you more information on the
allowable exceptions. Remember that once you have accumulated 6 non-exempt drops, you
cannot drop any other courses with a W. Therefore, please exercise caution when
dropping courses in any Texas public institution of higher learning, including all seven of
the Dallas County Community Colleges. For more information, you may access:

If you are receiving any form of financial aid, you should check with the financial aid
office prior to withdrawing from classes. Withdrawals may affect your eligibility to
receive further aid and could cause you to be in a position of repayment for the current
semester. If you fail to attend or participate after the withdrawal date (see below), you will
also be subject to this policy.

If you are an international student on an F-1 visa, you cannot withdraw from classes
without jeopardizing their official status. If you are on an F-1 visa, you MUST NOT
withdraw from ANY class without the permission of an International Student Advisor in
the Multicultural Center, S136 (telephone 972-860-4192).

If you do decide to drop this course, you must do so by 7 p.m. on June 25, 2014.
Withdrawing from a course is a formal procedure, which you must initiate in Admissions;
your instructor cannot do it for you. You are encouraged to discuss withdrawal plans
with your instructor. If you stop attending and do not withdraw, you will receive a
performance grade, usually a grade of F.
