design CRUISE incorporates much of the experience of those companies.
Your Benefits
Simulate the standard and most complex driveline structures efficiently.
Perform all fuel economy, emissions and performance tests in a single
run with the same vehicle model.
Hybridize conventional vehicles with a few mouse clicks.
Explore new transmission concepts such as automated manual
transmissions (AMT) and dual clutch transmissions (DCT).
Execute very large parameter optimization and component matching
tasks with DOE functions.
View the energy and power flows graphically for the whole powertrain.
Vehicle System Simulation Requirements
Cost reduction and time pressure in vehicle development demand highly
flexible simulation systems. The models that these tools produce need to ful-
fill their functions over the duration of the product development workflow to
prevent the initial concept from being lost under the weight of conflicting
engineering demands and compromises regardless of the driveline topologies.
The increased complexity of advanced vehicle concepts requires the inter-
disciplinary cooperation of teams, as vehicle-level simulation tools need to
leverage the communication between different teams and ensure consistency
in model and data management. Resources are hard to justify for the time-
and cost-intensive development, validation and maintenance of vehicle-level
simulation tools, and yet comprehensive tools are required to fulfill the pro-
duct defining attributes such as fuel economy, emissions, performance and
drivability with an optimized cost/benefit ratio.
AVL Approach: Consistent Simulation Models
and Application-focused Workflows
AVL CRUISE supports everyday tasks in vehicle system and driveline analysis
throughout all development phases, from concept planning through to launch
and beyond. Its application envelope covers conventional vehicle powertrains
through to highly-advanced HEV systems.
CRUISE offers a streamlined workflow for all kinds of parameter optimization
and component matching guiding the user through to practical and attainable
solutions. Due to its structured interfaces and advanced data management,
AVL CRUISE has established itself as a data communication and integration

AVL CRUISE
Analysis of torsional vibrations of elastic drivelines (under dynamic load).
Drive quality assessment of transient events such as gear shifting and

Vehicle thermal management.
Energy flow analysis, analysis of power splits and losses within components.
Component and Sub-system Integration
The highly flexible structure of CRUISE makes it possible to change an exi-
sting driveline within minutes. Adding hybrid components to a conventional
vehicle can be done with a few mouse clicks, using electrical components
designed for HEVs. CRUISE can be easily linked with other simulation tools
for the sub-system integration of vehicle thermal management systems,
vehicle control systems, driving dynamics and handling tools, components,
sub-system test rigs and HiL systems.
Interfaces to the following tools are currently supported,
and tools are being added:
AVL BOOST (engine thermodynamics, exhaust aftertreatment)
AVL DRIVE (drivability assessment)
C, FORTRAN (open DLL interfaces)
Matlab

/Simulink

(control systems)
FLOWMASTER (fluid cycle simulation)
KULI (fluid cycle simulation)
IPG CarMaker (vehicle dynamics, HiL)
AVL CRUISE Vehicle and Driveline System Analysis
CRUISE is AVLs vehicle and powertrain level simulation tool. It was devel-
oped together with five leading OEMs to a set of diverse system requirements,
ensuring the success of their vehicles on the market. An object-oriented
physical model approach makes CRUISE powertrain topologies reflect their
real-life counterparts. The user can quickly start doing vehicle system analysis
without having to review the mathematical equations and control laws of
powertrain components and program vehicle test procedures.
Scalability is a central philosophy of CRUISE. The program offers the flexi-
bility to build up a single system model, which can then be used to meet the
requirements of diverse applications in powertrain and driveline development.
Starting with only a few inputs in the early phases, the model matures during
the development process according to the continuously increasing simulation
needs.
AVL CRUISE Application Areas
AVL CRUISE is typically used in powertrain and engine development to opti-
mize the vehicle system, components and control strategies with regard to:
Fuel consumption and emissions for any driving cycle or profile.
Driving performance for acceleration, hill climbing, traction forces and braking.
AVL CRUISE is also used for tasks like:
Evaluation of new vehicle concepts such as hybrid powertrain systems.
Analysis of standard and new gearbox layouts like DCT and AMT.

The Tradeoff between Fuel Economy,
Performance and Drivability:
Multi-parameter sensitivity analysis of any scalar, characteristic or value
within a characteristic or map.
Overall component variation analysis for finding the right combination of
various powertrain components quickly.
DOE plans can be imported and exported.
Advanced results representation (variation cubes, trade-off diagrams).
Significant reduction in manual work for carrying out driveline studies
and in the risk of making mistakes.
Achievement of the best compromise between performance, fuel economy,
emissions and drivability in one integrated simulation loop.
Consistent Data Management
Finding the Right Data Quickly:
Oracle-compatible database functionality, with data version control, access
rights administration, search and filter options for any CRUISE-related data
designed to complement existing company databases.
File-based data management of projects and their versions, vehicle
models, components, maps, etc., including a unique search functionality
for CRUISE data stored anywhere on a local disk or in the network.
Efficient data handling features like import, export and copy and paste for all
input parameters and results (e.g. data exchange with MS Office products).
Traceability of data and decisions through the development process.
System Analysis Starting with the Very First Idea
The competing attributes of powertrain and driveline design pitch fuel econo-
my, emissions legislation and performance goals against one another. Even if
all these finite requirements are met, there is still the subjective drive quality
to contend with!
The perfect balance between these market demands for vehicle performance
and drive quality require the comprehensive optimization of the vehicle power-
train as a whole. Vehicle component development cannot be done in isolation
when the goal is to have improvements in fuel economy, performance and
drivability.
The acceptance and success of a new vehicle is defined by its strategic target
definition, the choice of the powertrain configuration and the selection and
sizing of the components early in the early development phase.
From Single User to Multi-User Development Teams
CRUISE is the industry's most mature commercial tool for vehicle system
simulation. It offers ease of use and the flexibility to handle tomorrows
complex powertrain structures. The workflows in CRUISE are developed by
the worlds major OEMs (and the worlds largest independent powertrain
consultancy) for all kinds of parameter optimization, component matching and
sub-system integration. The modular structure, state-of-the-art interface and
advanced data management makes it the choice of a large and ever increas-
ing number of OEMs and suppliers. And many of these companies have
established CRUISE as the vehicle simulation platform on a corporate level.
