Quarter Auction to Benefit Ailing Teen

A Quarter Auction will be held Saturday, June 14, at the West Milton Senior
Citizens Center, 435 W. Hamilton St. The doors will open at 6 p.m., with the auction
to begin at 7:00. The public is invited.
This event is a fundraiser to benefit Becca Mason, 16, in obtaining a medical
alert/service dog. Becca, daughter of Robert and Michelle Mason, suffers from
asthma and other medical conditions which qualify her for this service. The dog
will be provided and trained by SIT (Supporting Independence through Teamwork),
Ava, Illinois, which works through community support to make service dogs more
affordable. An overall goal of $8,900 must be reached in order to acquire a trained
service dog. Lex Dietz, owner of SIT, stated, We are looking forward to selecting
and training a dog that will meet all Beccas needs.
Mason, a Milton-Union student and a bassoonist, performed with the Carillon
Park Youth Band in 2013, the Lima Youth Area Orchestra for the 2013-2014 season,
and currently is a member of the Englewood Civic Band, with several concerts
Becca Mason
scheduled. She competed with the Ohio Music Education Assn. and received a Superior rating on a Class A piece. Mason attended college music camps during the past two summers. She takes
private bassoon lessons from Omar Lozano. Masons love of animals is leading her to a career involving the care
of animals.
Numbered paddles will be sold at a nominal price at the door, which allows a person to participate in the
bidding process. Attendees should bring quarters in order to bid on donated items.
Various direct marketing vendors will donate items for the auction. Sandy Earick and Julie Mason have assisted
in organizing the event. In addition, specific items are being donated by local community support to be auctioned
for the benefit of Masons goal. Sue Deaton, friend of the family, will emcee the auction for the specific fundraiser
items for Mason. Items to be auctioned will be on display prior to the auction.
West Milton area businesses, as well as friends of the Masons, have been generous in their support. Everything
from tickets to a Cincinnati Reds game to lawn chairs, garden supplies, and beauty salon certificates, to a car detailing certificate have been donated. There will be something for everyone!
Light refreshments will be available.
Future fundraisers will be planned in order to reach the $8,900 goal. Family and friends of Becca appreciate
the communitys support.
For questions, contact Michelle Mason, 937-974-5887, or michelleamason@aol.com.

Valley Echoes
by Gary Godfrey

Hey! My Tilt Doesn't Work.

I hauled my bass boat from Florida to Ohio because I wanted to do some fishing this summer. We
arrived home around April 11, and I've never had it in the water since.
It's still on my to do list, but for some reason we can never find time. It's not like Florida where
you can walk down to the dock and fish within five minutes or less. I fish just about every evening
on Lake Clinch.
Let me explain the difference between wintering in Florida and living in Ohio.
I was having trouble with boat one sunny afternoon. The electric tilt just wouldn't let my motor down
into the water. I had charged my battery and put it back just the way I had taken it out. So I thought.
I grabbed my tester, a few tools, and tried to find the cause. Within minutes, I had three guys helping me with my dilemma.
Are you sure all the wires are connected?
I'm sure, I reasoned.

Letter to the editor

Fields of Grace Worship Center on the road to recovery
On May 21, Fields of Grace Worship Center sustained a tremendous amount of damage from heavy rains
that caused a flood that affected different areas of Covington. Our youth and their leaders were having their
weekly youth group meeting at the time, which was a blessing in disguise, as they were able to save some
of the electronic items and some of the music equipment and our prayer kneelers. Thank you FOG youth,
Graham and Katie Furrow, Joe Vincent, Nicki Ingle, and Jeff Shaner for acting so quickly.
We want to say a special thanks to all from FOG who showed up that evening to help but were unable
to do anything but hold prayer in the alley due to not being able to be in the building because of the depth
of the water. But Ron Fraley bravely retrieved all of the youth and youth leaders to safety with his truck.
Fields of Grace, at one point the evening of the flood, had close to eight inches of water throughout the
building. By 10:30 p.m. the Covington Eagles were contacted and plans for Sunday services to be held in
their hall were arranged. Thank you to Jack Young for helping us with this and also coming to the church to
volunteer his time to help with the clean-up. Also, thank you to the Covington Eagles trustees, staff, Bill,
who is the janitor on Sunday mornings, members, and the Ladies Auxiliary for helping us out. It is greatly
appreciated.
Both services, children's church, youth and nursery ministries, continued as usual. Youth will continue to
meet at the Eagles until we return to our building.
The next morning, the damage was assessed and basic clean-up began with scoop shovels and then shop
vacs. A big thank you to Pastor Dan Scalf from the Bradford Church of the Brethren for showing up on this
morning and helping until evening. His words of encouragement meant the world to all of us. The folks from
FOG just kept showing up in shifts and much was completed and has been completed since then with their
help.
F.E.M.A. and the insurance companies had to be consulted, and after many efforts to save the drywall it
was decided it all had to be cut up several feet and all insulation and carpet removed, as were bottom cabinets in the caf areas. We were able to save our chairs and childrens tables and chairs.
Our damage fell into Category 3, which meant that manure and fertilizers were present in the water as
well as our floor drains backing up, and this required not only the removal of things, but after the church was
gutted it was sprayed with a special chemical to stop mold and bacteria, which was required by F.E.M.A.
We are now going to have spray insulation put into the walls, new drywall, paint, and carpet, as well as
replacing furnishings. Our damage was estimated at $100,000. And, of course, no insurance for flooding.
Which was typical for most in our community who suffered loss through this flood.
We will have a new, clean, fresh church when it is all completed and will be thanking God for it all. It
will have a different look but the same ministries and message.
We as a congregation have looked at this as a blessing. We have grown closer to God and each other. We
appreciate the calls and offers to help from churches outside of our community, as far away as Indiana. We
have praised God through this entire situation, opportunity, challenges, processes and, yes, joy.
We once again are enjoying our time at the Eagles and look to be back home in our church within the
next 3-4 weeks. Thank you for asking about us and keeping us in your prayers.
Sherry Furrow, Outreach Pastor
Fields of Grace Worship Center

We tried everything four guys could think of, including prayer. I think it's in the hydraulic, one
guy suggested. You'll probably have to take it in for service.
All four of us agreed, and just like that, they all disappeared. I tried a few more things, including
kicking my engine. I decided to walk back to the trailer to get something to drink. I needed refreshed
and time to think about this puzzle.
When I arrived, I noticed we had company. It was Ginger's sister Sandy and her husband Rich.
What's up? Rich greeted me a smile.
Rich is one of those guys who can tackle just about any kind of job, and make it work. You know
the kind. They can build a lean-to shack out of trees and limbs while stranded in a jungle. The
MacGyver type.
Rich agreed to walk down to the boat and take a look at my problem. Within three seconds, he asked
me to give the electric tilt a try. Instantly, it worked.
What did you do? I asked.
You didn't have one of your wires hooked to the battery, he mused. Just remember, if you have
three wires on the negative, you need three wires on the positive. The wire was dangling behind the
battery, he grinned.
THiS WEEk'S BoTToM linE: Sometimes it takes five men to fix one boat.

The Stillwater Valley Advertiser is pleased to publish a

church page for our readers. Our next regular monthly church
page is scheduled to run JULY 2.
This is a great way to publicize revivals, guest speakers, musical programs, and other special events, as well as welcoming newcomers to the area who are seeking a house of worship.
Individual church ads will be two columns wide by two inches
and offered at a very nominal cost of just $20 PER MONTH.
Contact our office at 937-473-2028 or 937-473-2029 and our
office personnel will be happy to assist you.
You can also email our sales representative, Yvonne
Welbaum, at ywelbaum@gmail.com.
