The Word of Faith brings Salvation

1

The Word of Faith brings Salvation
Romans 10:1-17, New American Standard Bible
Theme: Sirs, what must I do to be saved?

Introduction

A. Paul desires in his heart and prayer to God for the salvation of the Jews.
a. For he knows that they have the zeal for God, but not according to knowledge.
b. For not knowing about Gods righteousness and seeking to establish their own
they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God.

B. In Romans 1:16-17, Paul says that he is not ashamed of the Gospel because it is Gods
power unto salvation to everyone who believes; to the Jews first then to the Greek. For
therein, the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith, as it is written, the just
shall live by faith.
a. These verses simply mean that the righteousness of God is found in the Gospel
making it very important for a person to know it. He will know Gods plan of
salvation - the saving power of the Gospel (Romans 1:16; 1 Cor. 15:1-4).
b. However, in the situation at hand, men did not choose to know about Gods
righteousness. Rather, they establish their own righteousness, and they did not
subject themselves to the righteousness of God that leads to salvation.
c. This is why Paul appeals in his heart and prays to God that if only his brethren
will understand that the righteousness of God will lead them to salvation, they
will be saved.
d. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.

Body

I. Moses writes that the man who practices the righteousness which is based on the
law shall live by that righteousness

A. In Leviticus 18:1-5, the LORD spoke to Moses. God ordered Moses to tell to the sons of
Israel that they must not do what the Egyptians did in their land, nor follow the statues of
the people of the land of Canaan.
a. God says that He is the LORD their God.
i. In this statement, God is asserting His authority. He does not want His
children to become ungodly for the walks of the Egyptians and the
Canaanites were ungodly.
ii. Just as the slave is subject to the authority his lord; the wife to the husband
and with more reason the children is to be under the authority of their
father, God says that the people must obey His commandments, statutes,
and judgments in order to be righteous in his presence.
iii. They are to perform, keep, and live by it for in it men will have life.

B. In Nehemiah 9:29, we are told that God admonished the Israelites in order to turn them
back to His law. However, they acted arrogantly and did not listen to His commandments

but sinned against His ordinances, by which if a man observes them he shall live. And
they turned a stubborn shoulder and stiffened their neck, and would not listen.
a. Simply put, the Israelites were disobedient to Gods commandments. They were
walking in their own righteousness. But God, constantly loving them, admonished
them as a father to a son to go back to His law and commandments for in
observing it, they shall live.
b. However, the Israelites were arrogant. They wouldnt listen. They wont turn back
to God.
c. Thus, because of their disobedience, they sinned against His ordinances. And we
understand that when there is iniquity, there is a separation between God and
man. And when there is sin, God hid His face from the person so that He does not
hear.

C. From these verses, therefore, we can conclude by saying:
a. That, in order to gain righteousness in the sight of God, one need to perform His
commandments.
b. That, if a person fails to perform His commandments, he commits sin, thus,
leading to the separation of God and man resulting to God hiding his face from
man.
c. And so, Paul concluded that the man who practices the righteousness based on
law should live thereby.

II. But the righteousness based on faith tells us The Word is near you, in your
mouth, and in your heart (Romans 10:8). This is cited in Deuteronomy 30:14.

A. In Deuteronomy 30:15-17, God commanded the Israelites to love the Lord their God, to
walk in His ways and to keep His commandments, statutes, and judgments in order to
love and multiply, and that the Lord their God may bless them in the land where they are
entering to possess it, that is, Canaan. However, if they will turn themselves away from
God and his commandments, statutes, and judgments, and will not obey it, but are drawn
away into worshiping idols, and other gods, the Lord God made it certain that they will
perish. And they did perish when they suffered to numerous attacks from foreign
invaders.
a. We learn from these passages how important it is to love God and obey his
commandments for in doing so we will receive life. If not, the people will receive
the curse. They will perish. In the NT, they will perish into the everlasting fire
(Matthew 25:31 and 42) where there is whipping and gnashing of teeth.
b. And so the same question is asked of us today? What do we want to receive? The
blessing or the curse?

B. If you will choose the blessing, that is eternal life, what must you do in order to receive
it? The answer is in Romans 10:9-10.
a. That if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that
God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved; for with the heart a person
believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth he confesses, resulting in
salvation.

b. But the question is how are you going to believe that God raised Jesus from the
dead, and confess Jesus as Lord if you have not heard?
c. So the question arises:
i. How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed?
ii. How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?
iii. And how will they hear without a preacher?
iv. How will they preach unless they are sent?
v. And what must they preach according to the Scriptures?

III. Application: Cases of Conversion

To better understand the questions, it is necessary to cite some cases in the Acts of the Apostles.

A. The Case of the Three Thousand Souls (Acts 2:14-42)

a. First, there was a preaching.
i. The Apostle Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and
declared to the Jews present on the Day of the Pentecost. But what did
they declare?
1. They declared the fulfillment of the prophecy of Joel (Acts 2:14;
Joel 2:28-32).
2. What else? Starting in verse Acts 2:22, Peter began preaching
Jesus Christ and the Gospel. The Gospel, according to verse 23,
was that Jesus Christ was nailed to the cross and was put to death.
But God raised Him up again putting an end to the agony of death,
since it is impossible for Christ to be held in its power. Brother
Peter cited Psalm 16:8-11.
3. What else? There was a comparison made between David and
Jesus Christ.
a. David died and was buried, and his tomb is with us today.
Jesus died and was buried too. However, since David was a
prophet, it was promised unto him that one of his
descendants would sit on his throne. And so, he knew and
looked ahead and spoke of the resurrection of Christ for he
prophesied that the Lord Jesus was neither abandoned to
Hades nor did His flesh suffer decay. And so from this, we
understand that David died and was buried, but Jesus died,
was buried, and was raised from the dead on the third day
(1 Corinthians 15:3-4).

b. The preaching was based on what?
i. The preaching was based on scriptures. Peter, guided by the Holy Ghost,
used the scriptures to prove that Jesus was the Christ, the Savior of
mankind.

ii. He also proved that the death, burial, and resurrection of God have been in
the foreknowledge of the Lord, and this is the only way to redeem man
from his bondage with sin.

c. What happened next?
i. The listeners were pricked in there hearts. As a result, there was an
inquiry, Brethren, what shall we do?
ii. Peter replied, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).
iii. So those who were baptized were added by the Lord to the church those
who were being saved (Acts 2:47).

d. Observations
i. There was preaching of the Gospel based on Scriptures.
ii. There was pricking of hearts resulting to the inquiry, Brethren, what shall
we do?
iii. There was an invitation to repent, and be baptized in the name of Jesus
Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy
Spirit.
iv. There was an acceptance of the invitation. Those who accepted the
invitation, the Lord added them to His church those who were being
saved.

e. And so, going back to Romans 10, there must be preaching of the Gospel first by
a preacher based on the Scriptures (Romans 10:14-17). Then, after the preaching,
believing thereon that Jesus Christ died, buried, and was raised from dead
(Romans 10:9) for by it one is lead to righteousness. Then, there must be a
confession that Jesus Christ is Lord (Romans 10:9) in order to be lead to
salvation. Then, in Acts 2:38, there was repentance, and baptism in the name of
Jesus Christ for the remission of sins in order to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
And lastly, the Lord does the adding into His church (Acts 2:47).

B. The Case of Paul (Acts 9)

a. In Acts 9, Jesus Christ appeared to Paul while he was on his way to Damascus to
persecute the Christians.
b. Paul became blind. From there, he learned to trust Jesus and obey His commands.
i. The command to Paul was to go to Ananias and learn what he must do.
ii. He was taught of the Gospel.
iii. He believed thereon.
iv. He repented.
v. He was commanded to Arise, be baptized, and wash away your sins,
calling on the name of the Lord (Acts 22:16).

C. Lastly, the case of the Eunuch (Acts 8:31-38)

a. The Holy Spirit led Philip to a Eunuch who was diligently reading the Isaiah.
b. Philip preached to the Eunuch.
c. After preaching, there saw water. The Eunuch inquired, what hinders me from
being baptized?
d. Philip said, If you believe, you may be baptized. The Eunuch believed and
made a confession, I believed the Jesus Christ is the Son of God (Acts 8:36-38).
e. And so, the Eunuch was baptized.

Conclusion

In conclusion, we have learned that:

A. It is necessary to hear about Jesus Christ and His Gospel (Romans 10:17)
B. It is necessary to believe thereon (Romans 10:9-10; Acts 8:36-38)
C. It is necessary to repent and go back to God because it leads to salvation (2 Cor. 9:10)
D. It is necessary to confess Jesus (Romans 10:9-10; Acts 8:37)
E. It is necessary to be baptized in the name of Jesus for the remission of sins (Acts 2:38;
Acts 4:12; Romans 6: 3-11; Galatians 3:26-27; 1 Peter 3:21; Mark 16:16)

These steps are necessary to be complied with by a person desiring to receive salvation and the
hope that in the distant future the fountain of life will be given to him. Failure to comply
therewith results to disobedience just like what the early Israelites did a long time ago.

Find Gods comfort by responding to the Lords invitation for you to be saved today. As we sing
the invitation song, I would like to request those who want to receive the Lord to walk in front.
