Como un lamentable registro en
nuestras memorias queda, aquel
verano del ao 1997, cuando se
produjo una de las mayores
catstrofes ecolgicas registradas en
este sitio, el aumento significativo de
los sedimentos, arrastrados por el
agua, con un alto contenido de
the presence of current man in the
zone, and pollution mostly generated
by mining processes.
Such summer of 1997, when one of
the major ecological catastrophes
occurred in the place, a significant
increase of sediments dragged by the
wat er wi t h hi gh cont ent s of
chemi cal s and heavy met al s
generated by mi ni ng i ndustri al

This terrible event caused a still
unresolved alteration to animal life
and vegetable development of this
zone.
In spite of the above, Loa river, as the
only and unconditional source of
natural water for life, provides us in
certain kilometers new chances for
conservation of a rich bird and coast
mammal fauna.
Among the group of mammal s
existing in the zone, we can highlight
Vampire or Vampire bat (Desmodus

mouse opossum (Thylamys elegans).
19082_Interior.FH11 Tue Nov 27 17:32:21 2007 Page 15
The Vampi r e bat ( Des modus
rotundus) is a specie that approaches
its victims climbing up by their
bodies, grabbing with its sharp nails
until reaching the back of the ear in
bigger animals or all the earflap and
sea lion (Ontaria sp.) fins. It usually
lives in caves in separated male and
female colonies, in numbers that may
arri ve to 200 i ndi vi dual s. I t i s
di stri buted from the Regi on of
Tarapac to the Region of Valparaso,
close to the sea.
Among the group of birds, we can
highlight, for their large number in
this site, the Grey gull, Red head
turkey vul ture, Domi ni can gul l ,
Goatsucker, and Chercn, among
other species.
Focusing our attention on the Grey
gull (Larus modestus), we can say
that this specie lives mostly at the
beach and at the coast desert. Its
head i s whi ti sh i n summer and
grayish in winter, with a grey body,
qumicos y metales pesados,
provenientes de los procesos
industriales de la minera.
Este lamentable suceso signific una
alteracin hasta hoy no resuelta para
l a vi da ani mal y desarrol l o
vegetacional de esta zona.
A pesar de esto, el ro Loa, como
nica e incondicional fuente de
aguas naturales para la vida, en
cientos de kilmetros, nos da nuevas
oportunidades para la conservacin
de una rica avifauna y mamferos
costeros.

Gaviota Garuma ( Larus modestus ),
podemos decir que esta especie vive
principalmente en la playa y en el
desierto costero.
which is darker in upper parts. It has
black colored legs, wings, and beak,
being easy to distinguish it from the
rest of the gulls.
This specie nests in interior sectors,
behind Coast Cordillera, at distances
ranging from 15 to 150 kilometers, in
the middle of the inland desert, in
stony prairies. They spread in winter
by the coast to the north and south,
and get together in summer at the

trips when the night is falling, taking
advantage of warm air masses to fly

individuals. They fly back to the coast

Their houses had a circular structure
semi-buried for protection from

fortified side walls with stone slabs,
which were then reinforced with
small stone arrangements and with
a paste made of marine algae ashes
mixed with sea water.

La estructura de sus viviendas era

un hoyo poco profundo, amurallaban
con piedras lajas las paredes laterales,
luego las reforzaban con pequeos
arreglos de piedras y con pasta hecha
de ceniza de algas marinas con agua

3,611 m.a.s.l., the Loa River directs to

Continuing to the west of Calama, in
the middle of the desert, the course
makes its way deepening its flow in
the middle of Tamarugal Pampa, in
what relates to continental lacustrine
