Instructional Technology Lesson Plan

Date: March 17, 2014

Grade: 7
Subject: Instructional Technology
Duration: 1hr
Lesson Topic: Networking
Sub-Topic: Bus Topology
Specific Objectives:
1. After viewing a video entitled Bus Topology students should be able to:
i) Define the term buss Topology.
ii) Outline the process that takes place in the network.
iii) Identify at least two components of the bus network topology.

2. After viewing power point presentation students should be able to:
i) Give At least two advantages of the network.
ii) Give at least two dis-advantages of the network.

Content Summary: In communication networks, a topology is a usually schematic description of
the arrangement of a network, including its nodes and connecting lines. Bus networks (not to be
confused with the system bus of a computer) use a common backbone to connect all devices. A
single cable, the backbone functions as a shared communication medium that devices attach or
tap into with an interface connector. A device wanting to communicate with another device on
the network sends a broadcast message onto the wire that all other devices see, but only the
intended recipient actually accepts and processes the message.
Bus topology has many advantages and disadvantages. Some advantages include; easy to
implement and extend, they are well suited for temporary networks (quick setup) initially less
expensive than other topologies and they are cheap. The disadvantages includes; Difficult to
administer/troubleshoot. Limited cable length and number of stations. If there is a problem with
the cable, the entire network goes down. Maintenance costs may be higher in the long run.
Performance degrades as additional computers are added or on heavy traffic. Low security (all
computers on the bus can see all data transmissions). One virus in the network will affect all of
them (but not as badly as a star or ring network). Proper termination is required. (Loop must be
in closed path). If one node fails, the whole network will shut down. If many computers are
attached, the amount of data flowing causes the network to slow down.

Introduction

Introduce lesson to students by allowing them
to watch a video entitled: Bus Topology.

Watch video entitled Bus Topology.
Development

Engage students in discussion about video, by
asking students to give the definition of the
term bus topology.

Respond to question
Expected response: Bus topology refers to a
single cable that connects all the work stations,
servers, printers and other devices on the
network.
Put students in groups of four to brainstorm at
least two advantages and dis advantages of the
bus network topology.
Work in groups to come up with two
advantages and dis advantages of bus network
topology.
Allow students to view power point
presentation entitled bus network topology to
confirm or correct the advantages and dis
advantages they have given.
View power point presentation to confirm or
correct their responses given.
Engage students in a discussion based on the
power point presentation to see how much they
have recalled from the presentation.

Participate in discussion by responding or
asking questions.

Present to students a model of the network
topology in order for them to identify the
different sections of the model.
Raise their hands and wait for
acknowledgement from the teacher in order for
them to identify the different sections of the
model.
Review with students the important point in the
lesson.
.

Participate by stating the important points
brought out in the lesson.
