As the father of men, he takes a paternal interest in the ac- tons and well-being of mortals. His image appeared on most Greek coins. Zeus was the sixth child born to Cronus and Rhea . Zeus was mighty, glorious, awesome and wise, although he did show a certain degree of surprising foolishness and na- iveness when it came to hiding his love afairs. Zeus The main God everybody knows about. Zeus was the god of the sky and ruler of the Olympian gods. His weapon is a thun- derbolt which he hurls at those who displease him. Dionysus He was the god of fertlity and wine . He invented wine and spread the art of tending grapes. His Roman name Bacchus. A song sung in honor of Dionysus is called a dithyramb. Hes the only god with a mortal parent. The symbols of Dionysus were the thyrsos (a wooden stck wrapped with ivy leaves and vines), the fute and the wine barrels. His sacred animals were the panther and the tger. The origin of Dionysos name is according to the poet Pin- dar, it probably derives from the words Zeus, the father of Dionysus, and Nysa, the mountain on which Dionysus was born and raised. Dionysus was often accompanied by satyrs, human- oid creatures with horses ears and tails. The sacred symbol of Hades was his helmet, which helped him stay invisible. His sacred animal was Cerberus, his own three-headed dog. The Ancient Greeks feared to call god Hades by his name and always referred to him using descriptve ttles . With their faces averted they sacrifced black sheep, whose blood they let drip into pits, and when they prayed to him, they would bang their hands on the ground. He also has a helmet, given to him by the Cyclopes, which can make him invisible. The poet Hesiod said that Aphrodite was born from sea- foam. Aphrodite lived on Mount Olympus with the other su- preme deites and was married to the homely crafsman- god, Hephaestus. Her Roman name is Venus According to a myth, Aphrodite gave birth to Eros, the winged cupid of love and was ofen accompanied by him. Aphrodite's symbols were the girdle (which she was us- ing to compel love), the seashell and the mirror. Her sacred animal was the dove. Aphrodite means arisen from the foam in ancient Greek. Haides the King of the Underworld, the God of death and the dead. Haides was also the god of the hidden wealth of the earth Hes the brother of Zeus. He is a greedy god who is greatly concerned with increasing his subjects. His Roman name is Pluto or Pluton The word Hades is used in the Greek Old Testament to translate the Hebrew word Sheol, denotng a dark region of the dead.
